This generalization is wrong..............Yes you gamble big time when you are buying stocks of companies that are making losses............When you buy based on speculation you gamble but when you buy fundamentally sound stocks you invest except or otherwise if crisis like the 2010 occur and some companies incur serious losses, then there is possibilities of loosing out but this happens in every business.............Baba Ijebu is 100% gambling while stockmarket investment is not 100% gambling............Forte Oil was trading at a very low price in 2010 or thereafter but see where it is today without any restructuring of their shares like that of unity bank shareholders..................I read an article of one of the top executive of FBNH and he said they are not raising any capital by any right issue because it is unfair to their shareholders and it will add pressure to their equity...........So the resort to the use of cleaning up their balance sheets, savings cost to improve their capital base and also retaining most of their earnings..........Buying their stock can not be gambling as they are thinking ahead and put the interest of their shareholders in consideration.........Same goes to Zenith,GTB,ACESS,and some serious listed companies on NSE...............Unless my friend you are indirectly fighting the market and promoting bears so as to actualize your own dream..............You make sense in most of your post but sometime you over emphasize on irrelevant points based on your emotion...............Devaluation may happen or not but as a trader you need to figure out what you will do next incase the unexpected happens..........Market goes on regardless and people will still make money.............

Well to start with the stocks you mentioned in 2007

(FORTE OIL) which was former known as (AP) traded above N300.

UNITYBANK traded above N10
FBNH traded above N70
ZENITH traded above N70
ACCESS traded above N30
GTB traded above N70

For further enquiry ask the shareholders of
ALLSTATES TRUST BANK.
FINBANK.
AFRIBANK.
SPRINGBANK.
OCEANIC BANK.
INTERCONTINENTAL BANK.
BANK PHB just to mention but few i think they will explain better.

Thats pre-crisis level..........There was massive downturn all over the world and market hasn't recover from that crash till............I was a victim of intercontinental/Union Bank...............But thank God we have a better system whereby I can trade the stocks by myself and not waiting for weeks before passing info to my analogue broker..............My point is that you can't generalize that NSE is a total gambling like baba ijebu............Without online trading revolution,do you think I will invest millions in stocks.....I neglected stocks completely because of that experience and I made a big mistake for doing so.............My advice to investors is for them to be ahead and read all the news pertinent to their stocks and NSE generally and to avoid anyone to monkey-hunt them.............No speculation and to be decisive.............Sell when you are suppose to sell and buy when you are suppose to buy.................

Investment in stock market is never a gambling. You invest in anticipation of return on investment after observing all the due diligence. Like life and all our endeavors, there is associated risk that encompasses all our dealings and stock market is not exclusive.

You can invest in fundamental sound business today and it might go bad tomorrow because some of business that went awry. But that does not make you a gambler but a core investor because there is risk in everything.

What happened in 2007 affected the whole world even the most organized economy felt the the pains even more. But I was not happy about the tornado that hit financial sub sector because it was cause by Nigeria factor '' corruption " otherwise we wouldn't have seen the melt- down of that magnitude.

I lost my money in oceanic and intercontinental bank shares because I sheepishly believed that their businesses will stand the test of time because of their ""cameleonic " religious disposition(Cecilia and Akingbola). This i discovered to be farce after their indictment in massive corruption in their respective banks.

This made me to become very cold and strict in my investment principles , it adequately help me to always divorce emotion from investment.

Those days we were not thorough..........We only invest based on cheapest prices and cnn adverts of those banks and also we didn't trust the market thats why most people invested money that they can loose................The stockbroker intermediary was not helpful as we always suspect them........But now most Nigerians are more thorough and with the advent of online trading platform,NSE is now more liquid than ever even with all the tunbum tunbum crisis affecting the market negative money still flow in and out of the market.................I believe things will get better.............

Very interesting discussion we have here. I believe you determine what you are and what you want in the stock market. In this market, there are gamblers, investors, wise men and foolish men alike.

If you decide to take the pains to study, understand and to diligently put your funds in the market with a definite strategy to make money, you can call yourself an investor. On the other hand, if you decide to throw money at the market without much thinking in hope for a higher return, you may call yourself a gambler.

Just like every other business, there are inherent risks and uncertainties associated with the market. Let's not forget that the basic principle of the stock market is ownership of a number of units of a business. As a shareholder, you actually own a part of a company. So if you are conscious of this with an investor's mindset, why should you think you are a gambler and different from the man who is called a company director?

It is all about how you think and what you decide to do with your mind and your money. Over the years I have learned many lessons and I can confidently say I have found a strategy that works for me and I have been making money ever since.

Good........In addition to what you said,it is always the type that sees themselves as gamblers that incur losses in the stockmarket...........

Online I trade stock e-revolution is the best that has ever happened In NSE. You can buy or sell within minutes. We are given the power to take our destiny by our own hands.

In those days I remembered seeing one of my stocks making a dramatic tumbling in nse online portal. I called my analog broker to press the exit button but he declined and directed me to come and append my signature before the Sell order should be acted upon.
Not now, you do those things by yourself

There is no room for gamblers in the stock market, you are strictly an investor. If you want to be called gambler in stock investment then you choose to act foolish.

You should think twice..........There are positive developments for the banks especially tier 1 banks like FBNH,Zenith...........One major one is the securitization of state debts into FGN bond by CBN is very good for FBNH.............FBNH exposure to states is 110Billion Naira...............Expect bulls on financial stocks...................

I get your point, but you should also put into consideration that what those banks thought was a short term transaction (and financed with short term funds) is now a long term transaction. The banks without "enough" buffers are not going to maximize this.
The good thing however is the classification and weighting of these lent funds changes to the benefit of the banks.

I refused to be scammed. Most people believe God is far away from them, but very close to the men of god so they worship those men of god thinking they are worshipping God. All na eye service to God but God can not be mocked.God is as close to me as He's close anybody be it Adeboye or Pope

God is as close to you as he is to anybody so sister, start a church, preach the message of grace, draw people unto God, preach the truth that man cannot save himself except in Christ Jesus else just join to be a fellow labourer in God's vineyard.

I don't know how long you have been investing in stocks and how successful you are but since you have a family,I think you need a car.............The highest investment you have is in stocks and thats not kool...............When you make huge profit in stocks, you move it to your fixed income portfolio to increase your wealth................Buy the car now since you already have 5Million worth of stocks...........But to be sincere you need to work more harder and smarter to balance your life/family............Happy Sunday and goodluck..............

Suspension of a stockbroker does not have anything to do with an investor. That's why your portfolio are resident with CSCS, not your stockbroking account. Just go to CSCS and you will be advise on how to move your account to another one.

Bros in fact u need 2 cars not just one! Haba!! Making money is a means and not an end in itself. Once in a while give yourself a treat. That is why u make money. Meanwhile I share a different opinion regarding angelo's comment. Now is the time to be as heavy as possible in NSE in good fundamentally sound stocks. But how can u own most stocks on NSE? My arguement against this over-diversification is that it increases your risk/exposure. With 5m, I won't have more than one stock which is consistent in dividend. In nse at the moment one could get close to 20% dividend yield on cost with a possibility of > 50% capital appreciation in the nearest future. This to me is more sensible than any fixed income asset.

Don't get me wrong.............My advice is purely based on securitizing your profits..............If you don't have cash somewhere, how can you invest heavily in stock market right now when most fundamentally sounds stocks are cheap?..............Maybe my presentation isn't clear enough........You must have cash somewhere and the best way to have your fund in cash is by investing them in a fixed income pending the time you will need them..........Now he has 5M in stocks but not cash and apart from that nothing tangible elsewhere.................I believe in liquidity because with that you can do whatever you want.............With 5M in stocks he supposed to have made profits at different time which means financially he should be ok but is a different case..............I am heavy on stocks right now than ever and thanks to my investment accounts...........Even if this guy wants to invest more right now in nse from the assets declared above, there is no availability of heavy fund to do so.............Time for Nairaland to start using voice chat or instant chat because its hard to adequately express yourself............Tired of writing..........Meanwhile,I am buying from Monday till Friday and till the upper weekend................
