I am an ILAJE, and very much yoruba, no doubt.

Y is this question even up for debate?

It's like asking if a pathologist is a doctor, doesn't that sound ridiculous?

Not everyone is as ignorant about his race as you are. My closest friend in this life of close to 30 years is Apoi. He is very Yoruba as me (an Ibadan man) both in Language, name and culture. If I drop his surname, no true Apoi will not that recognize that name. Sowore the publisher of SAHARAREPORTERS is an Apoi Ijaw from ondo state. Just do a google search of APOI IJAW and learn. Their language has a rhythmic similarities with the Ilaje, Ekiti, Awori dialect.

Oga, before you come here to inform gullible persons here trash here, let me educate you....The Apoi's of ondo state are not yorubas, they migrated from Apoi clan in Bayelsa state just like the Arogbos that migrated from Gbaraun in Bayelsa state...the Apoi's bear Yoruba names nd speak like them because of the influence of their neighbours I.e the ikales and the Ilajes..Even the arogbos include some Yoruba words to the Ijaw dialect they speak...As I am talking to you, the Apoi's have traced their origin to the Apoi clan of Bayelsa state which speak the same dialect ijaw like the Arogbos and have started calling their kids ijaw names..I have a few of them as friends...and a family friend was one of the persons that went to Bayelsa then...That's far the Apoi's are now telling their arogbo brothers that they are not more ijaw than them....The AROGBO IJAWS and the APOI'S are pure Ijaw people.....any Apoi man that denies it, doesn't know his origin...simple!

any recent "tracing of origins" is most likely mercenary in nature and origin and as such, probably manipulated and not necessarily valid.

Possibly the Apoi (or some Apoi) might have been descendants of Ijaw fathers and Yoruba mothers, I think there's a group with such links although I'm not sure.

Igbos are lost tribes of Israel looking for identity and Aworis, Ilajes, Ikale are found tribes already identified in a domain.
Definitely, they are not an extension of Igbos.

Are you egun? Are you awori? Are you more YORUBA than the Yoruba?

This is exactly what i want them to understand, but Ola6 is here claiming Yoruba when he is just Awori and nothing else. He need to ask his people serious questions about whom he is. Perhaps, he is still too young to understand exactly who he is, so we can forgive him. Those from Badagry don't even see themselves as Yorubas, talk-less of a full blooded Aworian.
I am from Awori, my ancestors are adherents of Orisa Oduduwa, there is Iwori, which is a verb form of Awori in Ifa. Also, Ifa was said to have lived most of his life at Ado, possibly my hometown. The king of the place is called Olofin Adimula Oodua. Please where did your elders said we came from?

I had to qoute you on this, there are so much people trying to divide us ethnically, I have repeatedly told them that I am an Ijebu and Awori and they seem to ignore that fact, you give them wikipedia and they reject it, even though I said editing it is a very difficult task as it has to be moderated.

I quoted you because when you ask these troublemakers where there from they refuse to speak up, are they ashamed to say where there from.

Oh really? You are in a position to speak for the Ilaje?

I guess we should all listen to you rather than the Ilaje people in these Ilaje-owned websites who clearly say Ilaje are a Yoruba sub-group (like all the other subgroups).

my point here is tat ilaje re more related to us than most Yoruba sub group.

if an Ilaje man speaks u from Ogun won't understand, likewise us, 80% of them sees themselves as ilaje.

Did you take a poll to arrive at that 80%?

It doesn't even mean anything if 100% of them see themselves as Ilaje...because 100% of Ijebu see themselves as Ijebu, and 100% of Ekiti see themselves as Ekiti. On a higher level of kinship, all identify as Yoruba, and that includes the Ilaje.

So what if their dialect has affinities with Itsekiri language? Every objective scholar knows that Itsekiri language is basically Yoruba-derived with Edo loanwords. That the Itsekiri do not identify as Yoruba doesn't change linguistic facts. Though I respect their decision to be themselves, but language-wise let's not deceive ourselves.

Again, so what if someone from the more central Yoruba areas do not understand Ilaje easily? Do you think all Yorubas can communicate easily among themselves if they speak only their dialects? Do you know how many Yorubas have told me that they do not understand Ekiti and Awori people when they speak? Should Awori and Ekiti cease to be Yoruba, then?

Ilaje people have spoken. Their official position which you can find on their websites and other forums is that they are a sub-group of Yoruba - like all the other subgroups. Leave then alone and focus on your Itsekiri ethnic disitinction.

PS: I'm not even Yoruba. I'm from the Niger Delta like you ( though I prefer not to talk about my ethnicity.) I'm just someone with a professional interest in Nigerian groups.

I don't call it defending. LOL. I just like things being put as they are.

As for your question, I feel like I have to make one thing perfectly clear: I am not claiming anybody to be any thing. I merely showed you from Ilaje websites that Ilaje people themselves describe themselves officially as Yoruba.

What will happen if they are ceded to Delta State? I don't know - I'm not psychic. Although, I know that ethnic affiliations are sometimes made and broken depending on political climate. So, it won't surprise me a lot if they then begin to drift away from mainstream Yoruba ethnic politics. But I even doubt that they would go that far since they have strong traditions that derived them from Ile-Ife. Those traditions are bound to keep them within the Yoruba commonwealth.
