Why Do Nigerian Graduates Dread (or Is It Hate) Marketing/sales Jobs? by SamAbims(m): 12:59pm On Sep 16, 2015
I'm a person that likes exploring different options and always wanted to try out a marketing job though I don't have any tangible experience in the field. Everybody I've spoken with has said that career choice is a no go area. That brings me to the question 'why is marketing so dreaded by Nigerian graduates?' To the extent that a colleague told me he would rather remain unemployed than take up a marketing job. Please I need to read you opinion and maybe nairalanders can please share their marketing experience.

Simple! Just because marketing jobs in Nigeria is hell. Your employers gives you targets that are unrealistic and they expect you to performs within set days or month.

Marketing of physical products might not be so stressful compare to marketing of services. Imagine marketing of Coca-cola and marketing of Life insurance policy.

Marketing in Nigeria: People you are marketing the products to, sees themselves as king and see you as slave, believes that buying from you safes your job and they use that as yardstick to ask for a favour in return. (female marketers) suffer this the more.

Most of the marketing jobs in Nigeria are "suffer head" jobs.

The target they set for you ehn! no be here undecided

I'm a marketing graduate, but I'll rather become a teacher than take up a marketing job.

Because people doing marketing job don't know wot marketing entails. I read marketing and d way i approach a client will never be d same way graduates of engineering do. Another tin i observed here is dat people criticise marketing job here if ordinary microfinance bank advertise 4 marketing officer position, u will see lawyers, doctors, engineering, accountants applying 4 dat position making it difficult 4 us dat know marketing and passion 4 sales. My advice is dat people should go and practice their professions and leave marketing 4 us. Thanks.

See reason

I worked as one before for a telecommunications at the lowest level of marketing though. U get targets that are absurd and when you get across to customers all they ask you is that how many of ur product do u want them to own. Then I ask myself the same question, Abeg SIM card na food?

Having read some comments about laziness and the likes I felt like let this people experience this job and let them comment latter, laziness *mtchew* if I hear.

Connection, well luck might get u some dat you'd cherish for the rest of ur life.

Abegi Marketing Job, me no fit do am again. Not anymore.

Personally, I don't like it because of the haRrasment from the opposite sex, the stress and the target that will be set for you. They use people and give them stipends at the end of the day, it doesn't worths it.

It's because the pay doesn't correlate to the amount of work put in. Imagine going out of your comfort zone to talk to strangers all day under this harsh weather, and end up earning 80 to 100 thousand while your mates will sit down under chilled AC in his cozy office pressing computer yet earn 4 to 5 times your monthly pay.
