AAG: Nigeria claim bronze via penalties

Nigeria won bronze at the expense of hosts Congo thanks to 5-3 victory on penalties in the third place match on Thursday at the Massamba Debat Stadium, Brazzaville.
The Nigerians had the last laugh on penalties after the encounter ended barren in regulation time.
It was the third time the West Africans have won bronze at the multisport quadrennial event after the 1991 (Cairo, Egypt) and 1995 (Harare, Zimbabwe) editions.
The feat was largely made possible by goalkeeper Emmanuel Daniel, who saved the spot-kick of Congolese captain Sagesse Bebele before Dumite Pyagbara scored the decisive kick to ensure victory for Samson Siasia’s team.
The Congolese have themselves to blame for failing to convert the numerous chances that came their way in a game they had a slight edge over the Nigerians.
Midway into the first half, Mavis Tchibota-Dufounou saw his goal bound shot miss narrowly before Mustapha Abdullahi fumbled with Nigeria’s best chance on 31 minutes, with only Congo goalie Chrtistoffer Mafoumbi to beat, he unselfishly squared Junior Ajayi, who shot wide.
The host had the better of the second half and substitute Silvere Ganvoula’s header from a free-kick on 75 minutes missed target narrowly.
Both teams failed to find the back of the net forcing the game into penalties, which saw Daniel Esien, Atanda Ololade, Kingsley Sokari, Erhun Obanor and Pyagbara convert for the Nigerians against Kader Bidimbou, Ganvoula and Julsy Boukama Kaya for the host nation.
Congo’s best remains winning gold at the maiden edition on home soil in 1965.

Kelechi Iheanacho, Man City's new ace carrying the hopes of a nation

With Dzeko and Jovetic having departed, Iheanacho is now City's third-choice striker
“He’s just 18 and started working with our squad last season, but he was unlucky and had a big injury in the last three months of the season,” said Pellegrini. “This year he started pre-season with the squad and will be a very important player for the future. He’s one of the reasons I didn’t bring another striker in when we sold Edin Dzeko. He deserves that chance.”
It’s a big ask of the rookie to fill the void created by the Bosnian’s exit, but if any youngster is capable of dealing with pressure, it’s the nimble-footed Owerri native. For all his undoubted ability, he remains a work in progress; a player for the future, the obvious message now being one of patience.
Back home, it’s expected that Iheanacho will one day lead the Super Eagles back to the long lost glory days when the national side played exciting, attacking football, and City too have high hopes for their new kid on the block. For the aptly named ‘Promise’ – his middle name – his prospects for the future are tantalising. Remember the name.

Does that makes him the most promising? Is that Journalist telling me he sees Loftus-Cheek becomingaa bigger star than Nacho in the near future. If he is talking of top rated youngsters.II can understand but most promising.

I hope Mourinho plays this Loftus-Cheek tomorrow against Arsenal. Funny people.
I think he'll be played against Arsenal. Well, Martial didn't make the list, so it certainly isn't top rated

imagine, they still had to resort to penalties against Congo. Tell me how we'll qualify for Olympics with these ones against Egypt, Algeria and Senegal. I hope NFF has sent letters to clubs of relevant players. I don't care if we have to beg, I just don't think I can watch a 2nd consecutive Olympics football without naija.

It is Egypt, Algeria and Mali. Nothing bad in playing a draw against Congo-the hosts. Remember even with the foreign players we still managed a draw against same team in the 2nd leg of the Olympic qualifiers.

There are very slim chances that the foreign clubs will release the foreign players. Siasia is condemned to plan based on the lads in camp. The boys are not much bad. Siasia just needs to get his tactics right.

I will blame CAF for the wrong timing of the U23 Competition. If we finally qualify for the Olympics I know most of these home based boys will be dropped. But for now, I would say dnt give up hope. The boys can still qualify us.

I believe the local boys can qualify us but only with a little help from a few good foreign-based stars.

We just can't afford to miss Rio.

You won't SafariHoney, Siasia knows he got just 2 options:
- qualify the team for the olympics OR

- qualify the team for the olympics.

Do you see? "Failure" or "fail and get fired" are not even among the options. It's either he succeeds or he succeeds.

Honestly, I wish that's true. But the thing is Sir, we haven't yet qualified. The Nov.28 - Dec.12, 2015 caf u-23 tournament is the olympic qualifying tournament for Africa.
Europe's is based on performances at the uefa u-21 tournament.
Conmebol(south america) is based on the south american youth championship.
Asia's based on an afc u-23 championship to be held in january next year.
Concacaf's based on an olympic final qualifying tournament to be held next month.
Oceania also got theirs for one slot.

So you see Sir, Nobody's thru to the olympics for men's soccer from africa just yet.

Jaypea98:

We qualified for olympics weeks ago when we played congo in two legs.
I wonder why no one here has told you.
The falcons u 23 failed to qualify .....

Re: All The News About The Olympic Eagles (U-23) HERE! by TheSuperNerd(m): 4:10am On Sep 19, 2015
Congratulations Sir...... *smiles* Actually, no kidding, Andre Dede Ayew is my favorite Ghanaian player. I rated him the true mvp of the 2009 fifa u-20 world cup coz the guy's pure class. That award went to his compatriot, Dominic Adiyiah, for good reasons too.

But come on, Ayew isn't the first or the last african to pick up the epl player of the month award. In fact he's the 6th african and 2nd Ghanaian to do so. So chill Sir. *smiles*

Osaze odemwingie of Nigeria picked up the epl player of the month award about 2 or 3 times. Okocha picked it up too. The first Ghanaian to do so was Tony yeboah. So it's nothing new for Ayew to have picked it up just once...... So far.
But hey, Even I gotta admit that Ayew's award says a lot about a player in only his first season in the Epl. So kudos to him. He remains my Favorite Ghanaian player.
*smiles*

And one more thing Sir, pls try to be a little mild in playing down Nigeria, if u must at all. And though you hate to admit it but you know Nigeria got a super pile of outstanding and intimidating soccer talents that are bound to rule Africa( yeah, I know you totally disagree with this. I understand.... RIVALRY-induced Viewpoint).
I understand the rivalry that exists but let's keep it healthy and not ill-laden shall we...... *smiles*

If The Local Players Dont Take These Little Chances That They Get With Both Hands And Up Their Game, The Present Nff Board Is Ready To Neglect Them In Search For Inexistent Ready Made Players From Abroad.
*MODIFIED*
I Dont Know Why It Is Difficult For Nff To Develop A Useful And Effective GrassRoot Program That Will Unveil Talents Every Now And Then.
Something Like Supporting The Principal Cup That Is Being Held In Several States Of The Federation Not Forgetting The NNPC Shell Cup as well, these are competitions that are laden with talents, rather than waste in funds on the clearance of players who will not add value to the national team (e.g shola ameobi)

well, that makes them dumb. Cuz the smart thing to do, knowing under-performance will get you axed, is to work extra-hard. Then again, if we're to go by thegoodjoe's accusations, maybe performance isn't a criteria, in which case, sabotage would be the ideal route grin

While I agree with you that we need to focus more on these developmental competitions, I think the problem goes beyond unveiling talents. We also need to pay attention to developing technical attributes in these talents. Yes, Nigeria is laden with talent, but most of it is usually physical and a lot of flair. Technique is usually lacking. You don't learn that playing monkey post or under the bridge. That is why we keep complaining about free kicks, corners and composure in front of goal. Nobody seems to teach that in our schools or mushroom academies. I cannot think of any Nigerian player at present who is the designated free kick or corner kick taker for his club. We need specialised coaching for these technical attributes.

Our local clubs also need to have feeder teams were players in the different localities can be groomed in a club setting from as young as 9-10 years old. That way they can also understudy those playing professionally.

Lastly, we need to work on the mentality of these talents. They must understand that making money isn't everything. I can't count the number of talents that have gone abroad and sinking into mediocrity as long as they are making enough to send money home and form big boy. They need to work hard at being the best and playing alongside the best. Besides, you'll earn even more that way.
