It's all mathematics let's do a little analysis.

A private uni has about 6000 students

The tuition & accomodation is averagely about 500000 naira

Total revenue is 3,000,000,000 naira

They have 300 lecturers (that is a ratio 1lecturer: 10 students)

They have say 500 administration n services staff.

Total staff is 800 staffs.

Assuming the average salary of staff is 200,000 naira monthly so let's put it at 2,400,000( puting into consideration professors, senior lecturer, senior administration staff etc might earn more but balancing it with low earners like gate man, Gardner, security)

Total staff annual salary is 800×2,400,000= 1.92 billion

After salary payment the balance left for the school is 1.08 billion.

Other expenses
Cost of social amenities (electricity, water, generator).
Cost of maintaining laboratory.
Cost of additional/ upgrade machinery and equipment.
Cost of maintaining the school buildings and structures.

I'm afraid that the remaining money might not be sufficient in servicing the other expenses.

I might have to agree that they are under paid and probably have to depend on IGR to make a profit.

I know that in the UK locals have to pay close to£3000 as tuition excluding accommodation which is 900k naira. I think the US is similar if not more, the fact is that education is expensive all over the world and the reason Nigerian university is cheap is because the government still pays salaries of staffs in other countries the university fends for itself with little or no support from the government. I am of the opinion that the growth of our educational system depends largely on the independence of the institutions.

If only you know the cost of running a University......you cant compare private to Fed Uni which is funded by the FG. Hes absolutly correct.
Re: Private University Fees Are Low - Professor Jide Owoeye by BobUg28(m):
Education is relatively cheap, though in some schools ;most especially the Federal Universities. But when you check the environment of the schools it's equal to the amount they pay in school.

Now i believe this man is drunk. University of ghana ranks 1757 in the world and 22nd in Africa.
While University of ibadan ranks 15120 (-13363 difference) in the world and 62nd in africa.
You took that word out of my mouth.
Why will he be juxtaposing between the Ghanaian's university to Nigeria’s?

I see......But why do we still have tuition free universities in the country ? how do they maintain the schools as well as pay the lecturers? IS it that the countries are too rich ?

for those of you criticizing this man. he is actually correct about the subventions public universities receive to run the institutions. The fees paid in public universities are subsidized. Why do people not do their research before blabbing and saying all sort of rubbish.

This N500k, N600k and N1.5M they are talking about, is it per annum or the cumulative/gross total of what students pay all through their years of study while in School? Cos I don't seem to understand what he is saying.
Per annum.

That is if you can afford it. if you complain that private universities in Nigeria are expensive, google universities in US and UK. Common public university in those countries i doubt if you can afford them with your myopic thinking.

Not all dear. My point was basically on the fact that even with the money we spend, the children are still not well educated so if one can bring out such an amount ,why not just simply send him to a good school overseas?

Get it? i have no issue in spending millions to train a child as long as its quality education.I my self want my son (when i get one grin) to either attend Mit,Oxford or Cambridge

kai! majority of nigerians are irredeemably ignorant! what he is saying in a layman's words are that government schools are heavily subsidized. And even at that, some subsidized government schools (state universities in particular) still pay between 150k-200k per annum..jeezz

Good afternoon my country people.

Before I comment...may I refer you to this post (click here)

Private universities in Nigeria recieve zero funding from government. As a result they have to raise money from the fees they charge....which is why many of them charge high fees.

If you want them to charge low fees....ask the government to take them over. But with the embarrassed state of our treasury...I doubt that the government would agree.

And the prof is right. In Obodo Oyinbo(US)....private school fees start from $22000-$50000. (N4,379,100-N9,952.500..4million-10million naira approx yearly). As a result....oyinbo universities can afford nice buildings, nice facilities, nice libraries, nice sports facilities, etc. They also get billions in funding from donations....and such.(And some universities in the US...eg Duke, cost 58000 USD.....that is over 10 million naira.).

Now...I am not saying that we should raise fees to N4 million per session. I am saying that Prof , whom you insult , is right. Nigerian universities are not as expensive as foreign universities....I mean the private ones.

You Nigerians want awoof....but you do not want to pay for the awoof. Note that we are oil dependent, and we produce about 3million barrels per day. Oil prices have fallen.....and we have to share the money we make among 170 million people....whereas Saudi, UAE and Norway have to share their oil money among populations less than 15 million.each.

The truth of the matter is....we have to pay higher for quality. After all...some of you say Nigerian universities are bad...and yes...some of the universities are presided by corrupt entities. But.....even then.....universities need funding. So...as you dey insult Prof...think about that.

That is why Nigeria must become an industrial society, and we must diversify the economy away from oil.

We must also become a law abiding society and end corruption so that investors can come in their thousands and create jobs and pay hefty taxes...so that we can subside education properly.

Most of the countries with free tuition follow a distinct population pattern, you would hardly hear of countries with population of say 80million having all free education. As regards your question other oil rich countries have less population going to university compared to Nigeria hence they can foot these bills.
