happy independence to all Nigerians.
i need the advice of my dear experienced and knowledgeable folks here .I am by name jesse, am from the north eastern part of nigeria. am presently a masters student somewhere outside nigeria, hoping to round up by january 2016. although, i have read threads discussing about lecturing job in nigeria, of which i find them interesting andf very helpful. straight to the point now.. am actually at a cross road, as to what decision to make. Do i continue with PHD immediately after my Msc or take up a lecturing job?
some points to clarify here is that, my school will give me scholarship immediately after the Msc prog, which am not gonna pay a dime for a school fees. also, am familiar with the system, hence i can round up the PHD program within 3 years.
another option is taking the lecturing job immediately after my Msc. the advantage here is i will be given a TETfund scholarship #9m# for PHD, of which i may have to work for around 2 years before i can further for the PHD.
which of the two options do i go for? and why
at what level will an inexperience PHD holder be placed in the university? and how much is the salary?
at what level will i be placed as a masters holder with 5 publications and the salary?
i will be 25 years old in 2016. please i need your advice all. thanx in anticipation

@Shaxxjesse,

I perceive from your submission that the grade level and the salary you will be placed are important to you, if you are considering a career in lecturing, the salary might not be a major consideration to you now because either you come on board with your Masters or PHD, it is still not fantastic (relatively). You might want to play down on that for now but focus on preparing yourself for tomorrow

A friend of mine came back to Nigeria in 2011 with her PHD and no prior experience and got a lecturing job with one of the topmost public universities in Nigeria as an Assistant Lecturer. She has however grown to become a Senior Lecturer (cant remember the particular level) and holds a very key position in her faculty based on her demonstration of competence.

I am not sure if any of the two options is confirmed yet, but it might be okay to work for some years before you go for the PHD. With this, you might be able to define your research area better based on your lecturing experience and what you have observed is of interest to you. This will also brighten your chances of getting engaged because of prior experience. However, depending on the institution you chose for your PHD, 9M is not sufficient to see you through the three years.

The advantages of going for PHD directly after your MSC have been clearly stated by you. In addition to that, doctorate study is a job on its own so you are in a way gathering experience. Being a school funded scholarship, they might not allow you to work elsewhere, but there will/might be opportunities to lecture along the line. So you are still gaining experience. You will also not have to bother about funding your research. This looks like a better option to me.

Hope this helps to move you closer to making a decision.
