Camara: Guinea Can Suprise

Although Guinea were drawn into a difficult group at the FIFA U-17 World Cup in Chile and will face three-time winners Brazil in their third game, coach Hamidou Camara is confident that his side can be one of the event's surprise teams.
The coach told FIFA.comthat he believes the side can advance into the knock-out stage from a group that also includes Korea Republic and England. “Undoubtedly we are in one of the toughest groups, and everyone thinks that we will lose our three matches. I have been able to watch our opponents. Brazil are a team with good technicians, England are powerful and Korea have excellent players, who are technically gifted. But rest assured, we will adapt. In the history of the World Cup, African teams have often done well, and I am hopeful that we can play our part in continuing that tradition.”
Le Syli Cadethave thrice before appeared at the showpiece event of U-17 football, and they were in fact one of the African trailblazers in the competition, having competed at the first edition in China in 1985 and finishing fourth. In 1989 they drew all three group matches and failed to advance, while in 1995 they beat Portugal, but lost their other two matches and were knocked out.
Camara said he could not predict what style of play the team would play. “We expect tough matches, but we do not know in advance how a match will unfold. What I can tell you is that we have the awareness to adapt to the style of each opponent, so I do not have a single game system, but several. You will understand that I did not want to reveal my plans, but it is our aim to try to reach the knockout stages. Our most important game will likely be the one against South Korea on October 20 in La Serena.”
Excellent preparations
Camara's confidence has risen this year as he's had ample opportunities to work with his team. “We spent four months together, most of the time in El Jadida in Morocco. The conditions there were very, very good. We played a lot friendlies against teams from the Moroccan first and second division, as well as some youth teams. We lost just one and I believe that the results were satisfactory.”
After spending a few days in Guinea with family, the team will fly to Chile on 12 October, after an official farewell ceremony involving the head of the country. Camara said the players will then have a few days to recover from their long journey before playing their opening game against England.
The west Africans qualified for Chile courtesy of a third-place finish at the African U-17 championships in Niger, where they competed with a squad made up of predominantly locally-based players. Camara has retained all but three of the squad that beat Nigeria in the play-off game in Niger. One of those is Augustin Bangoura a talented forward who plays in France and is the only Europe-based player in the 21-man squad.
“It seemed logical to take most of the players who played in Niger to Chile. I went all over the country putting together the squad and I identified players who can help the team,” Camara explained. “Some were playing in small clubs, but they had great qualities. We worked with a lot of intensity, and the players spent much time together, getting to know each other. It was a gamble to rely mostly on local players, but I think for now, it works rather well.”
Starlets in the making
The coach is aware that some of the players could well move abroad after appearing on the world stage. “That is what we want. At the African championships, there were a lot of observers and foreign recruiters, especially Europeans. At our training camps in El Jadida, there were scouts mainly from France, Belgium, Portugal and even England. In Chile, there will be even more. I expect that some players will be asked to go to Europe.”
Asked whether leaving would be the right thing, Camara replied in the affirmative. “Some of them must go to Europe to advance their training. Europe is better equipped to do that, and it is important for them, but also for Guinean football.
"We are hosting the Cup of Nations in 2023, and these young players will be between 23 and 25 in just under eight years. Some will probably make the side then. International players must already think of the future, though at the moment I must think of the present, which is the World Cup in Chile.”

FIFA U-17 World Cup Chile 2015
South Africa's class ready for Chile 2015

It is said that a good coach needs to understand his players, and former teacher and psychology graduate Molefi Ntseki certainly fits that bill. FIFA.comspoke to the coach who will be in charge of the South African team at the FIFA U-17 World Cup in Chile later this month.
When asked what playing and coaching experience he has, Molefi Ntseki rattles off dates, clubs and places as if he was reading them from his CV. But he is not. He simply knows them off by heart. It is an indication of his coaching philosophy: Everything is done with meticulous planning. “It comes from my teaching background. That is how I obtained my teaching diploma. The methodology and the way to present to players comes from a teaching background and from what I learnt when I was doing my coaching courses.”
Ntseki, whose hopes of taking his own playing career to notable heights were scuppered by injury, was teaching a vernacular language (Sesotho) and working as a guidance counsellor when he decided to resign in 2002 and concentrate on football coaching. He went to Germany for a course and has not looked back, combining his former life working with youngsters with his love of football. “Knowing the methods of teaching, having gone through learning those stages, it is a very similar challenge with a football team. I don't miss teaching because I am really still doing it. Just football teaching, which people happen to call coaching.”
Facing challenges
When he took over the South African U-17 team in April last year, Ntseki faced numerous challenges, but he pinpoints the players' self-esteem as the biggest hurdle. “South Africa had many very talented players, but they did not believe in themselves. They gave opponents too much respect.”
It was something that he started to work on straight away as the team embarked on the difficult journey toward Chile. “During the qualifiers for the African championships, we kept on saying that we were going to the finals in Niger. And then once we were there, we changed our goal to be getting to Chile, and we focused on that. And in that way we came to the belief that this could be the team to take South Africa to the World Cup.”
In Niger the team drew with Mali and Côte d'Ivoire, and they secured the tense victory they needed against Cameroon to qualify for the semi-finals, which ensured qualification for Chile.
In the semi-finals, they managed to beat bitter rivals Nigeria and although they lost the championship match against Mali, Ntseki was satisfied with the performance. “It was a great feeling, not only for me as an individual, but for the whole country. Everybody rallied behind us, and it was a very exciting moment to see the team qualify for the U-17s for the first time.”
In Chile, South Africa will face Korea DPR, Costa Rica and Russia in Group E. “We are expecting very strong, very organised teams that will dig deep to win, and so we will go to Chile with a lot of respect for every country. Just as all the countries that have qualified should also have a lot of respect for us.”
With a target of getting out of the group, Ntseki says anything can happen once a team gets into the knockout rounds. “By then we will have seen what the other teams are doing, and we will have improved. Every game you play becomes an experience on its own, and by the time you get to the fourth game we should have an excellent understanding of what we can achieve.”
He said that it is likely that the nucleus of players who took the team to Chile will make up the squad and he is confident that not only can they do well in Chile but that they can also help the country develop further. “This team is a foundation for the future. Just in terms of having played at the African championships and the World Cup, they will have gained a lot of experience, and they will be coming to a good age for the 2022 World Cup. So yes, the future looks very bright for our country.”

I understand u Sir.... But it's not really your fault *smiles*

I think the media publicity given to this team was kinda on the low side.

But some players to watch out for in the squad include these:

-Kelechi Nwakali(10): MF *skipper/captain

-Victor Osimhen(9): FW

-Lukman Zakari Halilu(5): DF (this guy is the team's top defender going by performance at Niger 2015. He was injured in the 2nd game against guinea. Though he slightly recovered but that injury affected his contribution which is why that defence just collapsed. Watch out for him!)

-Ebere Christian Osinachi(17): FW

-Funsho Bamgboye(7): FW (post-niger 2015 addition who's been quite a revelation in the team's preparations).

-Kingsley Michael(6): MF

-Samuel Chukwueze ( 8 ): MF

-John Lazarus(2): DF

Note: From among the other talents are players that could most likely spring up as "Jokers" of the team and take the tournament by storm.... But above are the "obvious" top talents in the team.

Go go go Golden Eaglets!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

*smiles*

[b]Golden Eaglets clash with Racing Club

Nigeria’s U-17 team, Golden Eaglets would play their second and last warm up match before heading to Santiago for the 16th edition of the FIFA U-17 World Cup against the U-20 side of Argentine top
side, Racing Club de Avellaneda on Monday at the club’s central training pitch at Tita Mattiussi located in Greater Buenos Aires.

The match which organizers said would kick off at 10am Argentine time (exactly 1:00pm Nigerian time), is another opportunity for the coach Emmanuel Amuneke-led Eaglets to test their readiness to defend the trophy won by Nigeria for a record fourth time two years ago in the UAE. The Golden Eaglets last Wednesday beat their Argentinean counterparts 2-1 at the AFA Training Centre.

Meanwhile, Amuneke has yet reiterated that the best players have been picked to represent Nigeria at FIFA U-17 World Cup which kicks off this weekend with the Golden Eaglets playing their first match against the USA on October 17 at Estadio Nacional Julio Martínez Prádanos in Santiago.

“We started this journey in 2014 and I have seen a lot of players come and go; both the good and not so good but many of them are not with us today,” Amuneke told thenff.com. “Of course, we would have loved to see some of them (in Chile) particularly those that started the struggle with us and secured the
ticket that qualified us for Niger; and some others who were with us in Niger but unfortunately, they are not here.

“The list has been long in coming from 60 to 40 to 35 to 25 and eventually we have only 21 going to the World Cup with us. Frankly, we have done a good job because we have been fair to everyone in the process but of course, we cannot please everybody,” he noted.

Ya they qualified. Mali U17 defeated South African U17 team by 2:0 to win the Caf U17 Finals. While South Africa U17 defeated Nigeria to book a place in the Caf U17 Finals. Supersports will have no reason not air this tournament because SA is involved.

2013 Eaglet Musa Yahaya

Former coach of Nigeria U17 Manu Garba has again pleaded with the executive Governor of Cross River State, Ben Ayade, to redeem the houses promised the team after they won the 2013 FIFA World Cup.
Manu said it was about time Cross River State fulfilled the pledge made to the players and officials by the immediate past governor of the state, Liyel Imoke, after they won a historic fourth U17 World Cup title for Nigeria in the UAE.
"It is two years since we won the World Cup in the UAE, but unfortunately we are yet to get the house gifts promised to all the players and officials by Cross River State government," said Garba.
“All the 21 players and 10 officials who won the FIFA U17 World Cup in U A E,2013 have been calling me frequently asking questions on when we are going to get our houses promised us by our amiable Senator Imoke especially after the Super Eagles have got their landed property in Calabar from the former Governor.”
Garba said Nigerians and indeed the Golden Eaglets class of 2013 were very grateful to Senator Imoke and all the good people of Cross River for their unalloyed support towards the success of the team two years ago and therefore begged the incumbent Governor Ayade to complete the task.
"I want to use this opportunity to beg current Governor, Prof. Ben. Ayade, to ensure that we get our houses because Senator Imoke who was instrumental to our victory in 2013 gave us the gift in good faith," noted Garba.
"We are hopeful and prayerful that Prof. Ayade would complete the good job started by Senator Imoke and give us our houses."

Nigeria's Eaglets have their eyes on fifth World Cup

Nigeria's Golden Eaglets
Nigeria's Golden Eaglets will be gunning for record fifth U17 World Cup when they open the competition on Saturday against the United States of America in Santiago, Chile.
Eaglets have won the World Cup four times - in 1985, 1993, 2007 and 2013. They were also runners-up in 1987, 2001 and 2009.
The coach Emmanuel Amuneke led team booked a place in the Chile 2015 FIFA U17 World Cup as semi-finalists at CAF U17 championship, losing the third place game 3-1 to Guinea.
They featured at an invitational tournament in South Korea, which also included Brazil, Croatia and the home nation, before they trained in Argentina for two weeks ahead of the World Cup.
Two years ago a team parading the likes of Kelechi Iheanacho, Taiwo Awoniyi, Yahaya Musa, Dele Alampasu, captain Musa Mohammed broke several records on their way to winning the tournament in style.
In Chile, the Eaglets Class of 2015 boast Victor Osimhen, who is the team's leading scorer; Funsho Bamgboye, who has added class to the team’s strike force; Kelechi Nwakali, who is on Manchester City radar and Osinachi Ebere.
Golden Eaglets coach Emmanuel Amuneke is an ex-international and was the assistant to Manu Garba in 2013, when they won the trophy.

U-17 World Cup: USA Coach Warns Golden Eaglets

By Johnny Edward:
U.S. Under-17s head coach Richie Williams has boasted that he lads are fully prepared for the challenge the Golden Eaglets will offer when both sides face off in the group opener at the 2015 FIFA U-17 World Cup, which runs from October 17 to November 8 in Chile.
Nigeria face USA in their opening fixture at the Estadio Nacional Julio Martínez Prádanos in Santiago De Chile before battling hosts Chile and Croatia at the Estadio Sausalito in Vina Del Mar and Estadio Francisco Sanchez Rumoroso Coquimbo respectively.
Williams who recently named his 21-man squad that will represent the United States at the tournament also added that his side are on par with the defending champions who recently defeated Argentina 2-1 in a warm up game.
“I think it’s a great challenge and I think the guys will be excited. It’s a great opportunity to compete against the champions of the last World Cup and I think our guys are going to have a lot of energy, they’re going to be excited and they’re going to be ready to play, so we’re looking forward to it," he told ussoccer.com
"I think every World Cup game is important. You can’t say one is any more important than the other. You can’t overlook any team. It’s a World Cup game and everybody’s got to be ready to go.
"Whether you think they’re the strongest opponent or the weakest opponent, it’s the World Cup and all the games are very important and very competitive and anything could happen, especially if you’re not ready to play.”
"They are a World Cup team, so it’s another great preparation opportunity for us, and we didn’t want to go too long without playing 90 minutes against an opponent.
"We’ll have four good days of training there before we open up against Nigeria.”

FIFA U-17 W/Cup: It’s win or nothing, NFF charges Eaglets
By: JOEL AJAYI

Four days to the kick-off of the 2015 U-17 FIFA World Cup in Santiago, Chile, the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) has set a target “of the trophy or nothing” for the Coach Emmanuel Amuneke-tutored Golden Eaglets.
The NFF seemingly gave the charge through its Executive Committee Member, Hon. Sulieman Yahaya-Kwande, who spoke to National Mirror in Abuja.
Kwande, who is also a member of the House representatives, told our correspondent at the Abuja National Stadium moments after the U-20 national women’s team, Falconets, qualified for the final round of the African qualifying series for the 2016 FIFA U-20 Women’s World Cup, courtesy of a 4-1 aggregate defeat of their opponents from the DR Congo, that Golden Eaglets must defend the cup their compatriots won in 2013 in UAE.
“I have always said that the primary objective of the team participating in the tournament is to lift the tournament trophy. It is more or less a mandate we have handed to the team.
“As you all know, we always have confidence on our junior team. I want you to understand that we are defending champions and we will not settle for the less,” the NFF board member said.
He added, “I don’t think Amuneke and his technical crew have an excuse, with robust programmes and support we gave them, we charge them to go all out there and defend the trophy we won two years ago in the United Arab Emirates, coupled with the fact that they have been in camp for long, we don’t expect nothing from them than to enter final and win the cup.”
Meanwhile, Golden Eaglets played their second and last warm up match before heading to Santiago for the 16th edition of the FIFA U-17 World Cup against the U-20 side of Argentine top side, Racing Club de Avellaneda yesterday at the club’s central training pitch at Tita Mattiussi located in Greater Buenos Aires.
The Eaglets last Wednesday beat their Argentinean counterparts 2-1 at the AFA Training Centre.
Meanwhile, Amuneke has yet reiterated that the best players have been picked to represent Nigeria in Chile, with the Golden Eaglets playing their first match against the USA on Saturday at the Estadio Nacional Julio Martínez Prádanos in Santiago.

These Lads are looking good I must say.

Victor Osimhen got a brace in the game while Samuel Chukwueze got the team's other goal.

Our no.9 is truly one player to watch especially recalling he netted a goal in the team's 2-1 win over World cup-bound Argentina u-17.

He's the team's overall top scorer and was the top scorer @ the Caf u-17 Afcon.

These lads may not be as "embarassingly" talented as the class of 2013 but they do have a way of springing surprises especially when the top talents in the side are in "killer mode".

All the best Golden Eaglets......... "Maybe" you may do the "impossible"- *defending the title*

Yeah they may nt be as smashingly good as the last U17 bt i believe they still have what it takes to challenge for the title.
The last Eaglets were better by miles thann d other teams. With good tactics and technical and tactical descipline this team might jst win it. This is a much improved team from d CAF U17. Beating Argentina in their home soil is a pointer to what d team is in Chile to achieve.

[b]After Beating Racing, Eaglets off to Santiago

Nigeria's U-17 team, Golden Eaglets rounded off their tour of Argentina on Monday with a convincing 3-1 win over the U-20 side of Racing Club of Buenos Aires.

The Coach Amuneke-led Eaglets will on Tuesday depart for Santiago for the FIFA U-17 World Cup to be held in Chile between October 17 and November 8. Victor Osimhen grabbed a brace in the 12th and 56th minute Samuel Chukwueze added a third for the Eaglets. Gutiares scored for Racing in the highly entertaining match.

Amuneke described the impressive performance of Eaglets as very encouraging, adding that the pre-World Cup camping in Buenos Aires has added value to the team's preparation ahead of Chile 2015.

"The most important thing is to see the players grow from strength to strength and I'm particularly pleased with their performance against Racing today," Amuneke told thenff.com; "We are impressed because the Eaglets were able to implement all what we have been teaching them since
we started."

He was also of the view that winning their two-match friendly against the Argentine U-17 (2-1) and U-20 side of Racing Club (3-1) has positively boosted the morale before their departure to Chile. He said further: "We are not getting carried away despite winning our two matches here but we are happy we have achieved part of our objectives of coming to Argentina but we are grateful for the opportunity to be here for our preparation; we have been struggling to adjust to the cold weather since it is colder in Chile.

"The World Cup is a different ball game because all the 24 teams have the chance to win but we are going to Chile with the objective of defending the trophy and we are looking forward to a good tournament."

Meanwhile, a squad of 21 players and 10 officials including NFF Assistant Director (Technical), Siji Lagunju will on Tuesday evening head to Santiago for the defense of the FIFA U-17 World Cup won for a record fourth time by Nigeria two years ago in the UAE. The Golden Eaglets have been drawn against USA, Croatia and hosts, Chile in Group A.

Nigeria: Ugbade - We Must Live Up to Nigeria's Rich U-17 Tradition

Nigerian Nduka Ugbade is in the history books as the first captain to lift the FIFA U-17 World Cup. That was in 1985 when the young defender captained the Golden Eaglets to victory in the first-ever FIFA tournament at that age level.
Ugbade shares his memories of China 1985 with FIFA.com and looks forward to Chile 2015, where the west African country will be looking to secure a fifth U-17 crown.
Ugbade admits that when the team arrived in China 30 years ago, they were at first overwhelmed by what they saw. "We had the desire to do well, but we did not expect to win. Seeing all the big teams participating in the competition and playing in stadiums filled with 80,000 people was something we did not expect. Of course we had heard of FIFA and seen the World Cup on television, but the magnitude of the competition was not known to us until we got to China."
Some 27 years later, Ugbade had an opportunity to again experience glory in the competition, when he assisted Manu Garba as the Golden Eaglets won their fourth title, beating Mexico 3-0 in the final played in Abu Dhabi. Interestingly, it was the fourth U-17 World Cup played in Asia and Nigeria have won all of them.
For Ugbade, being part of the set-up again showed him just how different times were. "Back then it was about making a name for ourselves and representing the country, but for the players today there are different aspects. The level of poverty is high now, and what drives most of the youths is the desire to play well, win and be signed by big clubs all over the world. At the end of the day they want to make it [professionally], so that their lives can be changed."
Different times and rewards
Ugbade scoffs at the idea that he is bitter about playing in a time when players were rewarded with small scholarships instead of receiving lucrative contracts. "I can't be disappointed because that is what it was for our time. The time we live in now is totally different. If I say I am disappointed, what about the likes of legends like Christian Chukwu and Segun Odegbami and the rest. They played great football in the past - among the best the country has produced, yet they had no opportunity to make money. What they received for playing in the national team was a name."
The 45-year-old, who spent three years playing in Spain and also played for clubs in Singapore and Malaysia, believes that the Golden Eaglets will face a very tough challenge in Chile. "The Chileans have just won the Copa America and the pressure is on them to produce an U-17 team that will be able to beat the world.
But the Nigerian players should have an understanding that we were the first country to win this event and a lot of teams from Nigeria have won it, with Nwankwo Kanu and others. Most of the players who won it in 2013 are playing abroad and making millions, so they should know that they have their destiny in their hands, and that even though they are young they have to be highly competitive."
For Ugbade, winning the World Cup was a highlight of his life, though it did not bring riches. In fact, he and his team-mates are still trying to get officials to live up to promises they made to the players after the 2-0 victory in the final against Germany. "But it changed my life in that I became very popular and today I can enter anywhere and I am known by Nigerians and wherever I go all over Africa, whenever I am introduced, people listen to me."
Ugbade is still disappointed that he was never able to play in the senior World Cup. "I played in the qualifying matches for the 1994 World Cup and came on as a substitute in the final of the Africa Cup of Nations in 1994 when we beat Zambia. But when the squad for USA 1994 was announced, I was not selected. I don't know what happened. I am still asking until this very day, though I have put it behind me. I have tried to forgive and forget, though I felt very bad for years. That would have been an opportunity to make it totally big. If I had played for even just one minute. I would have gotten a bigger club and a better deal."
He has tried to continue to stay involved in the game however. "I found out later that the World Cup will always continue, that if you don't go as a player someday you can maybe participate as a coach, and I am on that path."

Nigeria: FIFA U-17 World Cup Chile 2015 - Nigeria Profile

The past
The only word to describe Nigeria's past in the FIFA U-17 World Cup is glorious. No other country has won the tournament as often as the Golden Eaglets (four times) and only Brazil can match their seven semi-final appearances. Remarkably, the team has made it through to the decider every time they advanced to the last four. The west Africans won the inaugural competition in China PR in 1985 and added titles in 1993, 2007 and last time out. They lost the 1987, 2001 and 2009 finals. The only time they qualified for the global event but failed to progress out of the group stage was in 2003, when they were denied a place in the last eight by the drawing of lots after finishing equal on points, goals and goal difference with Costa Rica.
The present
As overwhelming pre-tournament favourites the Golden Eaglets had an easy passage into the last four at the African championships, thereby booking their place in Chile 2015. Victories over hosts Niger (2-0) and Zambia (3-1) and a 1-1 draw against Guinea saw them top the group. However, in the semi-finals, the west Africans were stunned by an impressive South African team, who grabbed a first-half goal and then held on to their win. And though Nigeria lost the play-off for third place against Guinea 3-1, coach Emmanuel Amuneke said they had achieved their objective and would expect to be at their best in the world finals.
The future
Surprisingly, the Golden Eaglets have been more successful on the global stage than in Africa. It is not something that surprises Amuneke, who says that the conditions at the World Cup are more suitable to his side but has naturally been focused on hsi young team. "For us to be champions of the world, we have to prepare very well. We have been trying to correct some of the mistakes and lapses we noticed in Niger."

Guinea: FIFA U-17 World Cup Chile 2015 - Guinea Profile

The past
Chile 2015 will be the fourth time that Guinea participates in the showpiece event of U-17 football. Le Syli Cadet share the distinction (with Nigeria and Congo) of being the first African countries to participate at the FIFA U-17 World Cup. And they did so with distinction, as two victories, two draws and two defeats saw them finish the 1985 tournament in China PR in fourth place. Four years later they were again among the 16 best U-17 teams in Scotland, and although they did not lose any of their three group games, they also failed to win and were knocked out in the first round. The third time Guinea qualified for the U-17 World Cup was in 1995, when they beat Portugal, but were seen off by Argentina and Costa Rica and failed to advance.
The present
Guinea won four preliminary qualifiers, two each against Morocco and Togo, en route to the African Championships. in Niger. There they continued their winning ways with a 1-0 victory against Zambia in their opening match. A draw in their next game against pre-tournament favourites Nigeria opened the door to the semi-finals and although they lost their final group game against the hosts, they still qualified for the round of the last four and a place in Chile. They lost in the semi-finals against Mali, but ended the tournament on a high with a 3-1 victory against Nigeria in the play-off for third place.
The future
Guinean coach Hamidou Camara can build on a strong defence with goalkeeper Moussa Camara being one of the best in Niger, but the coach will be somewhat worried about the lack of goals upfront. The team scored just four times in the three group matches and the semi-finals and it was only in the play-off that the strikers found their scoring boots.

USA U17 team coach Richie Williams has admitted it will be a big challenge for his team when they face champions Golden Eaglets of Nigeria in the opening game of the FIFA U17 World Cup on Saturday.
But Williams said his kids will be excited as they anticipate the clash against the four-time world champions.
“I think it’s a great challenge and I think the guys will be excited. It’s a great opportunity to compete against the champions of the last World Cup and I think our guys are going to have a lot of energy, they’re going to be excited and they’re going to be ready to play, so we’re looking forward to it,” he said.
“I think every World Cup game is important. You can’t say one is any more important than the other. You can’t overlook any team. It’s a World Cup game and everybody’s got to be ready to go.
“Whether you think they’re the strongest opponent or the weakest opponent, it’s the World Cup and all the games are very important and very competitive and anything could happen, especially if you’re not ready to play.”
Saturday’s World Cup opener in Santiago will get an extra spice as USA will parade a Nigerian-born defender Matthew Olosunde of New York Red Bulls Academy against the Golden Eaglets.

FIFA U-17 WORLD CUP CHILE 2015: Mali Profile

The past
Mali enjoyed a run of their only three appearances at the finals of the FIFA U-17 World Cup consecutively, starting in 1997 and ending in 2001, but since then they have been absent from the showpiece event. In 1997 Les Aiglonnets were only denied a place in the semi-finals by a penalty shoot-out against Germany when Seydou Keita, who went on to win international fame and played for clubs like Marseille, Barcelona and Roma, missed his side's fifth penalty. Two years later they crashed out in the first round, but in the 2001 edition they again came agonizingly close to a place amongst the top four, but were denied by Argentina, who won 2-1 after extra-time.
The present
Mali only qualified for the finals of the African championships due to an administrative mistake made by Benin, who fielded four ineligible players in the first round of qualifying. But in Niger, the Malians had few problems, topping their group after victories against Cameroon (3-1) and Côte d'Ivoire (1-0) and drawing with South Africa (2-2). That saw them secure their ticket to Chile, but there was more on offer as they beat Guinea 2-1 in the semi-finals and outplayed South Africa to win their first-ever continental trophy with a 2-0 victory in the final match.
The future
The success in Niger brought on huge celebrations back home with the country's president leading the way, saying: "I am proud of these young players who planted the Malian flag on the roof of Africa during the competition.” The whole country is now looking for more success in Chile and coach Baye Bah has said that they will go to South America to valiantly defend African football. “We will respect all our opponents, but our goal is to go as far as possible. My players have the determination to compete in the semi-final or even the final of the World Cup.”

FIFA U-17 WORLD CUP CHILE 2015: South Africa Profile

The past
South Africa have been perennial under-achievers at U-17 level and Chile 2015 will be the first time that the Amajimbos have qualified for the global event. Their performance on the continental stage has not been that much better and they have only twice participated at the finals of the African U-17 championships. Their previous-best performance came in 2005 when they advanced to the semi-finals but lost to Gambia and then lost the play-off for third place against Côte d'Ivoire, thereby denying themselves a place at the World Cup finals.
The present
Like most of the other coaches Molefi Ntseki said that his main aim in at the CAF qualifiers in Niger was to reach the World Cup finals. His team managed that by holding Mali and Côte d'Ivoire to 2-2 draws and beating Cameroon 3-1 in the group stage. The South Africans then stunned Nigeria 1-0 in the semi-finals but lost the championship match 2-0 against Mali. “I believe what we achieved is the best performance by the team thus far, so I am very satisfied. Our mandate has been met, and this is good for the football of our country,” Ntseki said.
The future
For Ntseki the fact that they are World Cup rookies does count against them. “This will be motivation for us to work harder as a team and to reach our objectives. We will go to the World Cup to explore, experience and perform to our best ability. Being rookies is more of a motivation, rather than a set-back. This team has the potential to write their names in the history books of South Africa," said the coach, who admitted his side would probably learn a thing or two tactically from their experiences in Chile.

9 - The number of games South Africa played en route to Chile. They won two and drew two during qualifying for the African championships and then won two, drew two and lost one at the finals.
