Omeruo Surprises Golden Eaglets

Abuja - Super Eagles defender, Kenneth Omeruo on Wednesday afternoon paid a surprise visit to the Golden Eaglets' training session at the NFF/FIFA Goal Project Pitch in Abuja, with a clarion call on the players to push themselves hard to attain stardom.
Omeruo, a member of the silver-winning Golden Eaglets at the 2009 FIFA U-17 World Cup hosted by Nigeria, told the budding youngsters desirous of making the Chile-bound 2015 World Cup team to count themselves very lucky, adding only hard work and prayers can see them through.
"My mission here today is to come and encourage you and from my own experience, it is only hard work that can get you to the top," said the Chelsea defender who was on loan at Middlesbrough in the English Premier League.
"I met a huge crowd more than what I saw here today when I came for the Golden Eaglets screening in 2009; though we, Nigerians always believe you must know somebody to make it, I was able to make the team and got to play through hard work and prayers."
Speaking further, he enjoined the players to guide against acts of indiscipline and listen attentively to the instructions of the technical crew.

Golden Eaglets' captain Kelechi Nwakali, who spoke on behalf of the players, thanked Omeruo for the encouraging visit, pledging that the youngsters would tow the inspiring path of the 2013 Africa Cup of Nations winner.
"We are happy that you are here today to give us useful advice," Nwakali said matter-of-factly.
"You are our hero and we are going to do everything you have told us in order to make Nigeria proud in Chile."
Coach Emmanuel Amuneke rounded off the session by also commending the surprise guest even as he praised the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) for its support to the Golden Eaglets.
"Once again, I want to use this opportunity to thank the NFF for giving me the type of people I'm working with because their experiences have been of tremendous help in moulding these boys," noted the former African Footballer of the Year.
"We are not only teaching these boys how to play football but we want them to be useful members of the society in the future and I want to thank the technical crew and backroom staff in this regard."
The 1996 Olympic football gold medal winner further said the Golden Eaglets technical crew was making painstaking efforts in selection of the players due to the obvious challenges at this level, adding he was confident Nigeria would be hard to beat in Chile come October.

Amuneke: MRI Scan Can Affect Golden Eaglets’ World Cup

Golden Eaglets coach, Emmanuel Amuneke, is not too comfortable with the mandated FIFA Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) scan on players a week to the U-17 World Cup saying it will affect the team’s preparation.
The championship is slated for Chile between October 17 and November 8.
And Amuneke is already worried three months to the tournament where his team is the reigning world champions.
“Today, you have a team when they go through MRI you find out that none or most of them couldn’t make it,” he told NAN.
“But the truth of the matter is you cannot stop growth, so it is left for us to embrace the challenges the MRI is coming with.
“The MRI is here, so whether we like it or not, we must embrace it and we must work towards the future.
“If MRI is being done a week to the tournament, where all my major players that have been with me could not make it due to growth, so, what are they expecting?
“Are they expecting us to do miracle within one week to the tournament?”
However, the coach is optimistic about the team’s chances in Chile.
“We cannot make promises now, but what we intend to do is to work hard and do our best at the World Cup,” he said.

Eaglets Still Under Construction – Amuneke

By: Joan Iwuchukwu, Abujaon
Under-17 national team, Golden Eaglets coach, Emmanuel Amuneke has declared that his squad is still under construction and work in progress, as they intensify preparations for this year’s FIFA U-17 World Cup in Chile.
The cadet squad’s players are currently in camp, ahead of the defence of the world title they won at UAE 2013 and, as the trip to Chile draws nearer, Amuneke told SportsDay that his plans are gradually taking shape.
He, however, stressed that, even as his team’s preparation the forthcoming championship is gathering steam, it is still work in progress, but interjected that he equally appreciates and lauds the lads’ efforts towards success for the side.
The ex-international, former FC Barcelona of Spain winger and 1994 African Footballer of The Year further stated that, with hard work, the players would be able to overcome certain challenges and enthused that the team will get their desired aims.
“Encouraging these young lads and appreciating their efforts to see to the success and development of the team is most important. Because we need to evaluate and analyse these team and come out with the best.
“Most of the challenging factors is the MRI test. It is the major. Most of these players came from places, academy all over the country.
“So we need to work hard select the best that will give us what we want. That was why I say the pressure would there because it is part of the job.
“Football is on the ball and off the ball. Most of these players while coming were taught what to do with the ball when you are with it and to do when you are not with it.
“So we teach them all these as they are here to bring out the best in them,” concluded Amuneke, who has coached previously at club level with Julius Berger FC of Lagos and Ocean Boys of Brass.

Liverpool Sign ‘Nigerian Robben’ Adekanye

Nigerian-born teenager Bobby Adekanye has announced his arrival as Liverpool’s latest summer signing.
The 16-year-old former Barcelona youth team player posted a picture of himself with a Liverpool background on Instagram on Thursday and wrote: “I’m very happy to sign for Liverpool.”
Adekanye, who is a left-sided forward, will play for the Liverpool Academy. He is described by the Liverpool Echo as ‘Skilful, left-footed and blessed with great pace, Adekanye has plenty of potential, and has been compared to Arjen Robben’.
He was born in Nigeria but was brought up in Holland after his parents moved to Amsterdam when he was four, and also has Spanish links.
He was available as a free agent after being caught up in a dispute between Barcelona and FIFA over the recruitment of youngsters to their highly-acclaimed La Masia Academy.
FIFA ruled that Adekanye was illegally signed from Ajax at the age of 11 in 2012 and he was banned from taking part in competitive games for Barcelona. As a result last season he was sent out on loan to PSV, who had hoped to make the transfer permanent.
Barcelona wanted him to stay in Holland until the row had been resolved but with no solution in sight the youngster has decided to cut his ties with the Catalan giants.

Very good move by Adekanye. Liverpool is one of the few Premier League clubs that give youngsters a chance to break into the first team. Just like Flanagan. Liverpool also develop good young wingers like Sterling and Ibe. Wish him the best.

May be he felt the process will take much of their time. The one week to be used for the MRI test alone can be used for serious preparations before the competition. You know since he has not got his team ready, he will need time more than any other Coach in the competion. My opinion.

Amuneke Promises Strong Squad For U17 W/Cup

By Sab Osuji:
Nigeria coach, Emmanuel Amuneke has sounded optimistic he will raise a strong Golden Eaglets squad that will defend the FIFA U-17 World Cup won two years ago in Dubai when the 2015 edition gets underway in Chile, South America in October.
The former FC Barcelona winger stresses that in a bid to achieve success at the championship, he is presently engaged in screening of young talents from where he hopes to pick some players to bolster his squad that finished fourth at the CAF U17 Championship in Niamey, Niger Republic last February.
The 1994 Nations Cup winner with the Super Eagles reiterates that with hard work and commitment, success will be achieved.
“We’re taking a look at the players: invited and uninvited. The purpose is to see if we can get some who has some positives to bring to the team we already have on ground, Amuneke tells Completesportsnigeria.com.
“The idea is to ensure we present a strong team at the Chile 2015 FIFA U-17 World Cup coming up in October this year.
“It has not been easy, especially with the number of players turning up. It’s okay, it’s important to have plenty of options to select even though it is a tough task, but we’re coping,” he says.
With the championship billed to get underway in October, the former Julius Berger gaffer says the team is still on track.
“Three months I believe is still enough time for us to get prepared. Camping, yes, that I know we will do. Of course, the MRI test will also be conducted at the right time.
“We’re still on course, I believe. What we’re doing is to get the players first, then other aspects of preparation will follow," Amuneke emphasizes.

Nigeria: I Am Not Under Pressure to Win, Says Amuneke

By Alex Monye
Despite the country's recent poor performances at the Canada 2015 Women World Cup and the Under-20 World Cup in New Zealand, Golden Eaglets' coach, Emmanuel Amuneke, has said he is not under any pressure to win the FIFA U-17 World Cup billed to hold in Chile later this year.
Amuneke told The Guardian yesterday that the country's failure in the world championships should not be cause to write off other national teams preparing for international engagements.
He also prayed that Nigerians should support the Eaglets to excel in the Cadet World Cup. The former Barcelona star disclosed that the technical crew had concluded screening of the invited players, adding that the team would commence full preparations for the cadet championship today.
Still dismayed by the criticism that trailed his team after their failure to win the African U-17 Championship, Amuneke disclosed that his desire is to discover more talented young players Nigerians would be proud of in future.
He added: "I work hard day and night to groom these boys and any body criticizing the team at this moment is not being fair. They should realize I am trying to discover players from the grassroots that need more technical assistance to play as a team.
"The screening process ended last weekend and we would commence full training on Monday. There is no cause for alarm. With the support and encouragement of Nigerians, the players would give a good account of themselves in the championship," he said.

Nigeria: Amuneke Drags Golden Eaglets to Classroom

Golden Eaglets' Head Coach, Emmanuel Amuneke at the weekend dragged his wards to the classroom as part of their training regimen towards solid preparation for the 2015 U-17 World Cup in Chile.
After weeks of physical conditioning and training, Amuneke said it was imperative that the players were shown animated tactical details in order to broaden their horizon.
Amuneke, one of few Nigerians who hold the high-profile UEFA Pro License certificate alongside the likes of Sunday Oliseh and Mutiu Adepoju, showed the players different tactical formations on a projector with intermittent question and answer sessions with the players.
"These boys are lucky because nobody taught us anything like this in our playing days in the national youth teams," noted Golden Eaglets' assistant coach, Kabiru Baleria who played for the Flying Eagles set of 1989.
"We only made use of our brains most of the time in terms of organization on the field.

Amuneke slams NFF over unpaid wages

Nigeria U-17 coach and former Nigeria international Emmanuel Amuneke has slammed the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) over non-payment of salaries due to him, after the NFF announced it had paid three months upfront, the salary of new Super Eagles coach, Sunday Oliseh.
Amuneke, who is believed to be on a N1m monthly salary, claims he hasn’t been paid for several months, while questioning why the NFF have chosen to pay Oliseh, who earns N5m monthly, three months ahead without paying other national team coaches.
“The people that paid Oliseh decided to pay Oliseh,” Amuneke said in reference to Oliseh receiving three months’ salary upfront.
“But one thing they have to know is that there are other national team coaches working also that have not been paid.
“So if they owe other coaches and they pay Oliseh, I think it is not fair,” Amuneke said in a radio interview.
Speaking further, the former Barcelona winger said nobody should expect anything from him as he prepares the Nigeria U17 team for the FIFA U17 World Cup, since he is yet to be paid his salaries.
“Well nobody should expect anything from me since they haven’t paid me,” he added.
Amuneke was teammate with Oliseh for Nigeria in the ‘90’s.

Amuneke working hard despite not being paid by NFF

Lagos – Golden Eaglets coach Emmanuel Amuneke has explained how he has been striving to ensure he produces a good team that will represent Nigeria at the FIFA U17 World Cup in Chile in October, despite being owed backlog of unpaid salaries by the Nigeria Football Federation.
Speaking to News24 after it emerged he is being owed by the NFF, Amuneke said he has been working day and night, under the rain and sun, to ensure he builds a team capable of representing the country when the time comes.
“We are doing the best we can and everything humanly possible,” he began.
“We have been here since May and we have been under the rain and the sun from 9am to 5pm every day and maybe we are not complaining because we know what we want to achieve.
“We know it takes a process to achieve something in life because suffering brings endurance and endurance brings character and character brings hope and what we are doing now is to prepare ourselves as a team.
“Hopefully when we get to Chile we will be able to give a very good account of ourselves because the road to success is always under construction and nothing works in a day,” Amuneke stated.

Nigeria U17 team defeated Hensfield Football Club 6-1 in a friendly game played at the Fifa Goal Project ground in Abuja on Thursday
A first half treble from Orji Okoronkwo plus strikes from Promise Orji, Kelechi Nwakali and Ginika Eze were all the Golden Eaglets needed to emerge victorious while their opponents got their solitary strike through Muhammed Abiola.
"I'm quite impressed with the way Orji and Nwakali took their chances which is very good," former U17 coach, Manu Garba who watched from the stands said after the game.
"The team's general performance was very good especially in the first half and with many more matches, they would get better for the World Cup,” he concluded.

Eaglets Ready For Diaspora Stars – Amuneke

Under-17 national team, Golden Eaglets coach, Emmanuel Amuneke says his lads are ready to take on an array of Nigerian-born players based abroad, who are set to tango his team in a build-up game ahead of this year’s FIFA U-17 World Cup in Chile.
With the game now looming large as a litmus test for his side, Amuneke said he welcomes the encounter against the side dubbed ‘Diaspora Nigerian’ and described it as a useful development for the round leather game.
The self-styled ‘Soaring Eaglets’ made up of players from United Kingdom, Europe, USA and Canada will play two matches with reigning world champions, Golden Eaglets of Nigeria on July 29 and 30 at the main bowl of the National Stadium, Abuja.
Amuneke is preparing his team for the global challenge, after the Eaglets secured a ticket to Chile 2015 after coming fourth at February’s African U-17 Championship in Niger Republic, and would represent the continent alongside Guinea, Mali and South Africa.
The 1994 African Footballer of the Year said the Golden Eaglets under his watch is opened to all Nigerians irrespective of where they are based and any youngster has a chance of making the Chile 2015 World Cup-bound team.
“We are happy that the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) has approved these matches for us since it would offer us the opportunity at looking at Nigerian youths from outside.
“We have a clear idea of the kind of players we want for the World Cup. We would be delighted to get quality players from the boys coming from outside,” said the assistant coach when Nigeria won a record fourth U-17 World Cup in 2013.

Na so. I don't even know how these sport administrators in this country reason. How do you expect the Coaches to concentrate and do their best when you owe them salaries for several months? Some of these NFF board members can not even do their work if the government owes them the same way the do to most of our national team Coaches. I am not a friend to these people because they don't have human feelings.

Amuneke Hails Eaglets After Big Win

By Johnny Edward:
Golden Eaglets coach Emmanuel Amuneke is impressed with the way his side dismantled Henfield Football Club 6-1 in Wednesday’s friendly match at the NFF FIFA Goal Project in Abuja.
Amuneke told comple tesportsnigeria.com after the game that the boys took their chances and showed hunger and desire to win from the blast of the referee’s whistle.
While admitting that the presence of the board members of the Nigeria Football Federation, Chief Felix Anyansi-Agwu, Alhaji Ahmad Kawu and Ahmed Fresh, and 2013 FIFA U-17 World Cup-winning coach, Manu Garba, may be a factor, Amuneke was quick to add that this is not the first time his side will score six in a warm-up game.
“They are ready but as kids you must keep reiterating what you have taught them in previous sessions,” a delighted Amuneke told comple tesportsnigeria.com.
“We have not won anything yet which is one fact I keep telling them. So we must try and improve on the tempo daily.”
He however played down the enviable record his side boasts in their warm up games.
“That we have won 49 games doesn’t mean we have arrived but the boys must be encouraged and we will keep improving in every areas necessary because what has kept the team strong is the competition,” he added.

Nigeria: Eaglets Undergo MRI Test

By Jude Opara
Abuja — As part of efforts to ensure that the national U-17 team, the Golden Eaglets is free of every trace of age falsification and excel at the forthcoming FIFA U-17 championship taking place in Chile in October, the Nigeria Football Federation last week decided to carry out a mandatory Magnetic resonate Imaging (MRI) test on all the players already in camp.
A reliable source at the federation who pleaded anonymity told Sports Vanguard in Abuja that the decision may not be unconnected to the poor outing of the team at the African version of the tournament which was staged in Niger earlier in the year.
The Emmanuel Amuneke tutored side against all expectations only managed to pick one of the continental tickets to the world cup after the team lost out on the trophy zone. The result had caused a lot of criticism but our source argued that the team did well to qualify for the world cup because the late MRI test forced many first team players out of the championship.
"The NFF is being proactive this time ahead of the world cup and I think that is the right step to take because unknown to many people, before the last African championship in Niger, the MRI test caught up with most of the players who were in camp and that forced Amuneke to do a fire brigade approach to recruit more player for that championship.
"So this time, what the NFF wants to achieve is after this test which was conducted last Friday, by today or tomorrow the result will be out so any player who fails will be excused so as to make it easier for the coaches to coach only the right players who will qualify for the global championship later in the year."
According to him, in the next three months when the world body, FIFA will conduct the mandatory MRI test for all the teams coming for the championship, the Nigerian side will not again be caught napping because most of the players will surely pass the test after passing the internal one just three months earlier.
