thank you sir. Those situation room may just be a fancy state of the art relaxation centre for VIP's. We nor know the use. How can we have eyes in the sky and mission situation rooms being monitored by top DHQ officials and we are still talking about the NA not having a dedicated Air wing as the reason behind the lax in air support for ground troops. At this point in the battle against terror the COAS, NSA and CDS are all supposed to be monitoring every combat operation real time. We do not really need the COAS in the field, let him coordinate the operation from a real time command centre. We have given ourselves a December deadline and we do not yet know that it is high time for us to put all the resources available to use. I believe in the sub Saharan Africa Nigeria have the most advanced and diverse resources at her disposal for Geoint. But for one reason or the other we have refused to commit it to the war on ground.

Honestly I don't understand Nigeria armed forces / defence ; we bought chinese drones and how effective do we commit them into achieving maximum use. Instead of the COAS using the beeachcraft super king air for air patrols, why not our recently purchased chinese made drones and relaying enemy position to nearest ground troops or standby airforce strikes. I keep wondering what our money as brought us, we keep spending billions and nothing to show still?

50 Air Cavalry Battalion / 50 Kenya Rifles (Air Cavalry) (Embakasi) ( ACB / 50 KR) was set up as an aerial reconnaissance and airborne anti – tank battalion on July 1, 1979. Prior to its implementation, there were suggestions that that the new unit was to be an Air Force unit, either attached to Helicopter Squadron of Eastleigh Air Base (Moi Air Base), or F5 Squadron at Nanyuki Air Base (Laikipia Air Base).

At the time of the unit’s formation, the Army had no real aviation experience and, therefore, had to seek technical assistance from the Kenya Air Force. This is why two officers Lt Col (rtd) J. C. Kitundu and Captain (rtd) A. Omar were transferred from the Kenya Air Force to the Army and posted to the Unit. The then Army Commander Lt Gen (rtd) J. M. Sawe proposed that the new unit be named 50 ACB. In 1979, the new terminal at Jomo Kenyatta International Airport was opened, thus leaving the old Embakasi Airport unoccupied. The new unit was allocated part of this facility.

The first helicopters arrived in Kenya in the first week of December 1979 packaged in crates. After assembling the helicopters, the first public and official demonstration of the two helicopters was staged at Moi Air Base (MAB) Eastleigh, where they were put through all manuvers before high – ranking Government officials.

Air Force jet pilots going to Russia for further training

The financially strapped SA Air Force (SAAF) is further extending its foreign training commitments with Russia being the latest addition.
A report has it that about 10 pilots from 2 Squadron at AFB Makhado have been selected for further training in Russia. This is a direct outflow of a co-operation agreement signed between the defence ministers of the two countries, Afrikaans weekly Rapport said.

Four pilots are already undergoing training in Cuba and according to SA National Defence Force Chief General Solly Shoke, agreements have also been entered into with the United States and the United Kingdom on various aspects of military training.

At the same time the paper reports the SAAF has experienced more resignations from the ranks of its jet pilots.

“Four of only the handful of jet fighter pilots in the SAAF have resigned leaving the force with three times as many Gripens as qualified pilots for them,” the paper said.

Hawks are being shifted from training to operational duties (hence planned move of a squadron to AFB Waterkloof) because they are cheaper.

If you lose half the Hawk fleet from your training program, that means someone else has to pick up the slack... so guess they chose Russia for lead-in fighter training. My guess is that the Russians are cheaper than the Brits and there are political considerations.

Same thing with the batch sent to Cuba... in all likelyhood to make up for the shortage of basic trainers that arose through agreeing to train those Arabs.

The platform incompatibility is a non-issue since if those 10 are destined from Gripen, learning to fly the Hawk is unnecessary. So they develop their jet skills and competancy in Russia and then come here to learn to fly the Grip... doctrinal issues on the other hand are a big problem.

The government, especially in Africa does not grow anything. They can't run or develop a business........ hell, they can't even run a proper government.

The private sector is the only way forward.

No offence to Ghana, or the individual that built that, but that's simply not good enough. If we want to be self-sustaining we must learn to produce better more practical military equipments.

Still makes me mad that we continue to lose men in Darfur because al-Bashir will not allow the UN/AU to deploy air assets. Private Malashe was escorting a UN civilian convoy; in a 2-hour battle. A platoon managed to fight off 3 companies worth of rebels with no support, for 2 hours, in an ambush. 1 trooper dead, 1 seriously injured! I'm f&*ng mad as a QRF with even Oryx with 20mm guns could have saved lives in those 2 hours.
F&*k the UN and the AU, allow us to do the job, or don't send us at all!

APOLOGIES: my informant got details wrong - fog of war and all that. It was a platoon against 2 companies - one company at the ambush site which the platoon successfully repulsed, and another company deployed as a blocking force further down the road.
Sequence of events according to official reports:

1) Due to the increasing number of ambushes on these UN convoys (travelling on pre-determined routes meaning the initiative is always with the attackers), our SANDF motorised platoons have been beefed up by the addition of augmented weapons sections (as per our doctrine). OPSEC means no details, so all I can say is some 20mm cannon, more .50 cal MGs, 40mm AGLs, 60 & 80 mm mortars and every rifle group containing a DMR (need I say all this was locally-produced Denel materiel?);

2) 8SAI, which is the battalion currently deployed in Darfur, is normally a Mechanised Battalion, which means they've been trained and are proficient to handle the 20mm cannon usually mounted on their Ratels and in this case mounted on some of the Mambas;

3) The rebel commander was either incompetent or didn't have enough time to prepare the ambush and deploy his forces: a company of infrantry, supported by 4 PKM-armed technicals was deployed;

4) The SANDF platoon LT, observing this, rightly concluded there was waiting for his men a more fortified ambush site further down the road with more heavier-armed technicals and infantry;

5) Superior training and tactics meant he took 3 crucial decisions:
--a) counter and disrupt the ambush at the present site; then
--b) establish effective defensive positions from the numerically superior rebel company facing him, and raise the alert for relief from Mellit FOB, 2 hours away by road;
--c) deployed some of his Mambas and weapons section to the high ground to his eastern flank to deny manoeuvre to the enemy's better equipped reserve technicals and company;

6) It took 2 hours for the QRF to reach the platoon by road, having fought off a company, sustained 1 KIA, 4 WIA and kept the enemy's more superior reserve out of the fight.

My gripe remains this: the entire UN/AU mission in Darfur is only allowed by the Sudan govt 8 transport helicopters. They can only transport UN civilians and police. They are inferior MI-8 crap as opposed to the Oryx, and not allowed to be armed.
The enemy evaporated once they spotted the QRF after 2 hours, which would have been minutes if we had Oryx there, and saved lives. But neither the SA govt nor the UN/AU care about ordinary soldiers' lives.

It is a political decision from the ministry not the force.

Like the batch sent to Cuba they'll have to be retrained when the come home in accordance with SAAF doctrine and procedures.

The ones heading to Russia are Gripen pilots already. They have a lot of flying hours.

The Hawk squadron already have an operational wing.

The previous Thabo Mbeki government including the Mandela's shunned Russia and Cuba, alias which supported the ANC. This seems to be changing with the current one.
