Any way,

my friend such building is just a trial and error process and the fact that it didn't fail does not mean all buildings should be done that way or else there will be people falling off a collapse building.. there is a code of conduct in engineering and the codea were established by people smarter than you and I am so those codes should and must be adhereed to... I just wish a law on the defaulters be passed sooner so we can all learn

I intend putting up a 4 bedroom bungalow on a plot that measures 100x100. It's on a rocky but flat land. The design includes a laundry room, a pantry attached ti the kitchen and all rooms ensuite. Also, there's provision for a walk-in closet in the master bedroom. What sort of foundation should I go for and the likely cost implication?
it has to be derived based on calculations and its must be done with your architectural plans too... so its not like one just tells you to use a little after when he or she hasn't even seen any designs.....

Bless you op for a demanding thread like this. I've bought a land but plans to start my building by Feb. 2016.
The structures i hope should include 3 bedrooms, 2bathrooms and toilet each, 1 living room/kitchen, 1 dining room, small utility room and a gym room. I also want a "p.o.p" bent on the living room. Please do you have any idea on how i should go with the plans so as not to avoid architectural errors Thanks.
Modified, its going to be a flat pls...
you should contact an architect for your drawings and the consultant engineers for your structural details....

The bottom fibres of a reinforced concrete crossection, in this instance, a slab (solid slab i presume in your write-up), are NOT ALWAYS subjected to tensile stresses. Where cantilevers (or continious one-way panels) exists in the structure, you have hogging moments resulting to tensile bending stresses at the top as well.

Concerning foundation types, aside soil index and shear strength characteristics which are key to the design and selection of a foundation either for a static/rotating industrial equipment or building foundation, another consideration which you didn't mention is underlying soil settlement, both total and differential. Information extracted from geotechnical probe report which would include oedometer tests are key to the calculation and prediction of the consolidation settlement of an underlying cohesive strata and confirm if they are within permissible limits.

You have written well all the same.

are you sure you did engineering or tailoring

@ Opalu: good work. i have just plastered my 3bedroom twin duplex and after a while i stated noticing tiny cracks here and there on the walls. i inquired from the structural engineer what could have caused the cracks, he said the house have just began to settle. can you please give a candid opinion on this. Thank you

When talking professional threads like this, one doesn't need to be on the offensive or defensive as is done at politics section. Logical reasoning is key since we know in part noone knows it all

look who is speaking on the defensive part,do you think an estimate is something dat just falls out of the blue,I personally don't even mind those who ask without willingness to pay for it.that's even what a qs studied for....I can do you good by listing out the Softwares to help u out since there are some around.

Okay. I didn't see this question.
Columns (pillars) are not to terminate at the lintel for any reason.
The concept is for the roof loading to be transferred unto the roof beams then all the pillars at that floor stop inside the roof beam to transmit the loads down.

But some people don't do roof beams to tie the whole of the pillars before they put roof wood carcass.
The roof beam is just like a lintel that is on top of the block wall before the roofing. The usefulness is that where you have the "parapet" it comes out of the roof beam. Where it's just roofing alone, the quater rods that bind the Wall plates for the Roof are embedded inside the reinforcement of the concrete roof beam.

So in general, it's best to take the pillars to the end of the block wall and also to cap it all with a concrete roof beam at least the external walls where the roof will sit on To be able to anchor the Wall plates properly against wind forces.
or was he speaking about a design pillars or columnade? if yes then will stop at the lintel beam level but if its the internal support pillars then you ans him right..

U're bless sir,I'm grateful... I have decided to settle for a mix ratio of 1:4:4 for all the concrete works, both for columns and lintels. Hope that is okay?
lol,did you just type this to me your quote feel comfortable or you actually will obey that strict rule,in my experience even some clients will hardly agree with 1:7:7,,,I even do much convincing before some clients will go with that ,the most common is 1:8:8 so if actually you will abide by your word then I say tumbs up to you

Based on that picture you sent, even Einstein cannot give you the answer to how many blocks you will need.
You need the actual plan that specify all the sizes of the rooms and building as a whole...
