The Deji of Akure, Oba Aladetoyinbo Aladelusi, has banned the title of ‘Eze Ndi Igbo’ in Akureland and ordered it to be reviewed and replaced with a non-controversial honorary title.

This is one of the conditions given by the monarch to end the crisis between him and the leader of the Igbo community in the town, Mr. Gregory Iloehike. The monarch said the condition must be met before Igbo traders in the area would be allowed to continue operating their businesses in the community.

The traditional ruler dethroned the Igbo leader last week and stopped his men from opening their shops following an alleged rude behaviour against the traditional ruler at his palace by the Igbo leader during a meeting with Oba Aladelusi.

Some other conditions included that the dethroned Eze must apologise for his behaviour, said to be unruly in at least three national dailies as well as go to broadcast stations to also tender an unreserved apology. He was also ordered to write a letter of apology to the monarch and the Deji-in-Council.

Oba Adelusi also directed that the Igbo leader should stop wearing any form of crown and must comply with all the directives of the palace.

To this end, the state Governor, Dr. Olusegun Mimiko, met with the two leaders separately on Tuesday evening at the Governor’s Office, Alagbaka, Akure, and reportedly pleaded with the Akure traditional ruler to forgive the embattled Igbo leader.

At the meeting, it was gathered that the governor maintained that the Igbo leader could not go against the tradition and custom of the land, as there was no basis or constitutional back up for such attitude.

The governor, however, thanked the youths of the town, praising them for their maturity and peaceful disposition towards the matter.

The traditional ruler maintained that a truce can then be brokered once the conditions were met.

As a result of the crisis, all shops occupied by Igbo people at the Moferere Market, Akure, remained closed as of the time of filing this report on Wednesday.

Frankly speaking, if Yorubas have an appreciable number in any part of the East and decide to appoint their leader, nobody will disturb them. We appoint Eze Ndigbo (King of the Igbos) to be like a rallying point or father of the Igbos in a foreign land. It gives his position more dignity and makes him an authority only among the Igbos, in conducting their affairs.

Market leaders in Igbo land are usually elected by traders in the markets, and they are usually known and prominent traders in those markets. Traditional rulers don't go about appointing leaders in the markets.
In Hausa cattle markets, their leaders are usually Hausas because they choose them from among themselves. I don't know of any market dominated by Yorubas, as Yorubas are not so much into trading, but if such a market ever exists, I can bet you that the market leader will likely be a Yoruba. Igbo traditional rulers don't go about imposing their people as leaders in settings where there should be a democratic selection of leaders.

It happened recently in South Africa, they did not just lock their Shops, they rampaged and descended on these "aggressive immigrants and clubbed some of them to death as well".

And when you check, majority of the rabble-rousers are the same Nnyamirin-ibos we are talking about.

I am an Akure indigene(both sides). I lived in Akure for almost 26 years before moving to next level.

Akure is a place where Igbos could refer to as their home anytime any day considering their peaceful co-existence with Akure indigenes and Yorubas in that city. Igbos are having a blast in that city; no tribal issues, no disturbance from any quarter. It's all about making Benjamis for Igbos in that city and Igbos community is making that Benjamins cos there is peace.

However, it ll be suicidal for Igbos in Akure not to be boundary conscious like Hausas/Fulanis in Akure. Akure indigenes are the last people in South West that Igbos want to play around with. Akure indigenes would destroy all Igbos business in that city in less than 24hrs.

Igbos businesses are mainly concentrated at Ilesha garage(spare parts), Iro junction all the way to Isinkan(Electronics), Oba-Adesida (Boutiques) and Arakale(Building materials).

Unfortunately, Akure is not as big as Lagos hence, Akure indigenes know where and where all Igbos in Akure live with their families. It will be a straight forward tribal cleansing if the whole thing gets out of hand.

Igbos who are old enough to experience Omoboriowo Akure riot in 80s must have warned their kinsmen as to what would befall them in eventuality of riot(war) in Akure.

I ll implore Igbos to do what they have been doing for over 50years to maintain a peaceful relationship with Yorubas in that City. Igbos have made so much money and deserve to enjoy their sweat by staying away from trouble. Money gives you unnecessary pride and this pride could lead to one's downfall.
