That's the spirit of Great Ife. I did exactly the same thing you are doing 8years ago.

I remember going to Glo office on the island and I stood in front of Adenuga tower. The security guys are the most dreaded. They will never let you enter. You have to strategise. After spending hours in front of the office, if I see anybody dressed corporate come out of the building, I will walk up to the person and say "good morning sir/ma, pls I want to drop my cv in this company, can you help me"

Everybody I met, looked at me and hissed. Some will just politely say "sorry can't do"

I stayed there for more than 4hours and 1 guy just passed and said "you have been standing here since, what do you want" I told him and he collected the cv from me.

I was very glad that I did what I wanted to do. It gave me joy. My cv entered Glo. Though I believe the guy could have trashed it to relieve me from my trauma. Al the same, I was satisfied

So keep the faith. Push, go anywhere your mind tells you, be bold to talk to anybody you see. They were once job seekers.

Being recently churned out by NYSC, on October 15th of this month. I have always heard about how precarious it was to get a job in this country without connections, but I did not actually know the gravity of it until now. Armed with my 2.1 certificate from OAU (The best University wink) and my NYSC discharged certificate I thought now I have arrived to become gainfully employed.

I left Lagos for Abuja just 2 days after my POP, alas, after sending out countless applications and applying for any job that fits my criteria, I have not even been called for a single interview!!!.

I was swayed after a week and thought to myself, if I wouldn't be called for interviews I would go in search of the companies my self and make an appearance. I was Wrong sad. I am not really conversant with Abuja very well, but i was determined to go in search of a job physically instead of gazing at my laptop all day long. I dressed in my best, looked very corporate even wore my corporate court shoes that i painfully bought from my alawee in the hope that when I get called for interview by Standard chartered bank or PWC grin, I would launch it. Anybody that met me on the way would think I am a business executive,on my way to seal a contract deal.

Started the long journey to town as I stay close to the airport. on getting there I started from Wuse zone 3, as I had earlier sourced from the internet the addresses of companies that had posted vacancies in Abuja. My plan was to go and submit my CV in person .Unfortunately for me I was even unable to locate the offices as, the Address given on the internet did not even correspond. mogbe moment was activated as I was lost, broke and on heels with no direction. I was being turned back at most of the offices, that was when I realized the gravity of being an unemployed person. At a point removed my shoes and changed to my sanders as i had packed them in my bag. Dejected and sad, I turned back home. And here I am at home again. Glued to my laptop and scanning for job again. It is indeed pathetic.

OP, when I read your story, I felt like a married woman with kids, sitting and listening to a newly wedded bride (just 11days in marriage) already complaining about the challenges of marriage.

Welcome dear, to the real world.

To make your life easier, you'll have to erase that OAU "best university", "I have a 2:1" mentality. Your VC, lecturers and the whole institution will give you a bloated ego during your uni days, but won't be there to assist when you begin trekking the streets of Lagos, Port Harcourt and Abuja searching for a job. I'm a product of the University of Ibadan, I know what I'm saying. We all felt because of our school's pedigree, multinationals would be waiting to snap us into their workforce. We've long awaken from our dreams.

In my opinion, this is the time you get a small place to put your head. Somewhere that offers a job description similar to your desired role. Speak to them about being an intern with them. It could even be on volunteer basis,I.e, no structured salary. If they pay you, ok. If they chose not to pay, also ok(did I hear "God forbid"?grin). Welcome to the real world.

Staying there will give you a place to go out to every morning(for your emotional stability). It also gives you skill and experience, while building your profile and preventing gaps on your CV. While on this small job, you keep searching for and applying online to your desired job openings. You also enquire for certifications in your field and find ways of acquiring them. One of the best ways to find out which, is by reading through openings you desire to apply for, take note of all those certifications and competencies they keep requesting for. After a while you would have realized that some are mentioned more often than others. Seek ways to acquire those.

Summary: Get a small place, regardless of the pay. Develop yourself while you keep applying, speak to people who could be of help(in church, family friends, relatives, etc). As time goes on, things will begin to get clearer and you'll know your next line of action.

Sorry for my long epistle. Wish you all the best.

Lol.

October 15th you finished NYSC? you no even let the Ink dry for Month end? You Don enter road?

I like your spirit.

You will get something don't worry, it's just a matter of time. Meanwhile, do not limit your scope to Jobs in Nigeria only.

Apply for Foreign Jobs too.

Go through the UN Website. They usually have openings, although it takes them almost a year to get back to you if they need you.

But, give it a shot.

Goodluck.
This guy no lie i also passed out in recently. Ive lost 6 job slots in dubai and one in kuwait as a resultof nysc bullshit one yr...your chances of getting a job abroad is way higher than securing a good one here as you be fresh graduate now in dubai the least salary(if you pass) na 2500AED for full time. Your chances of employment will further increase if you go UAE with visiting visa.

Srong advise to corpers out thr, please begin right now to apply for jobs, so u won't experience frustrations and dissapointments after NYSC. No serious company will reject u just cos ur still serving. I'm a living testimony!!!

Be more open minded and optimistic. If a firm spends millions to carry out recruitment, anyone who scales the written tests is not just thrown out because he was still a corper... I'm an insider dnt doubt me, make the best use of time... Thats for standard firms who practise standard HR though... Getting a good job is a process which sometimes may even take up to 1yr. So better start the process on time so u won't suffer for long, that's if ur a corper...

Woman! your approach will only work for small firms. Big organisations have formal structure for recruitment.
My candid advice is/are
1. save your money for Internet and phone calls, you will need to be online and catch information on-the-go.
2. Save your time and effort to prep for GMAT style aptitudes. i.e. SHL, Assessment day, GRE, GMAC formats.
3. Save your suit and heels for PwC interview.
4. Refer to (2) above, your prep should be at 90% level. Top-rated companies are competitive and do NOT use cut-off points, they use percentiles. i.e. if they plan to interview 200 candidates, only the best 200 candidates are invited. The top 200 candidates can fall within 90% and 100% test scores. Someone with 89% did very well but MIGHT not get invited.

Best of Luck
I had the opportumity to catch the hr manager of a popular conglomorate here in nigeria and the above advice was what he gave me...i met the dude when i went to swim in a hotel. Worth every penny. BUT THEN AGAIN THE RAT RACE OF NIGERIAN UNEMPLOYED YOUTH STILL REDUCES THE CHANCES A GREAT DEAL. The gulf region on my mind.

U have really spoken well. Reality of life, your institution and/or class of degree does not guarantee u an express job...U will compete with other graduates who possess masters and a long line of professional courses; ur confidence and what you actually know would give you a smooth ride.

Moreover, most companies would prefer experience as they do not want to start teaching from the scratch....Take the advise of one who said u should start with internships, believe me, it will do more good as you would acquire the much needed experience, it would also give you the liberty to learn virtually everything needed to arm yourself for the next interview.... I have been called for interview(s) because of the little experience i have had over the years, which has no relationship whatsoever with my first degree. The key is knowing where you can fit in asides what you bagged as your first degree......This is Nigeria.....

Change will happen in terms of unemployment in Nigeria soon. Just don't stop trying. And Also @op, while you are still waiting for that dream Job, dont be idle, get something doing. If you can write well... You can be writing for blogs, some sites that pays for services and the likes.

I am also a graduate of
computer Science and Engineering
, finished NYSC on the 15th October, 2015 as well... actually, I'm still applying for jobs online, but I still engage myself on other things like Designing websites for people that needs my services, customizing jerseys and small importation biz, I think that is still better to being idle.

God Bless and Help we graduates.

God bless Nigeria.

Don't give up. I failed Standard chartered bank Test even after travelling from ph to Lagos. I failed fidelity bank test.I failed uba test. I failed mansard insurance test. Access bank never called again. Wema bank never called us even after we passed the 2nd stage interview. I have really failed, but when I found my purpose, failure ended. Most bank guys can't stand me...not trying to boost but when you find your purpose, nations will stand at attention for you... You have all it takes...Don't give up. Find your purpose.

The hustle is real o..I laughed when @op said she finished from oau(best university).I am a barrister for crying out loud, and I am yet to get a job.Nigeria no dey reason your course, degree or professional certifications. Its just God's grace that can help you get a job.Forget connections, they fail!Even those rushing to do masters with their nysc saved allawee..The Lord will see them through. No company rolls out the red carpet in your honour because you have a masters degree.Ask the phd holders that applied for the post of truck drivers when dangote recruited some time ago.Its not easy at all o.If they told me I would be job hunting as a lawyer, with 2.1 uni,2.2 law sch.I would have looked the person in the face and laughed out loud. The reality is not funny at all.I have travelled to lagos, ibadan all in search of jobs with law firms..Not that they even pay well o.
