Congrats so far. Based on my research, I think some schools require TOEFL for funding (especially the speaking section) as I've seen in a couples sites such as NCSU and UH. NCSU waives TOEFL for Nigerians but I found out 26 on the speaking section of TOEFL is a prerequisite to Teaching Assistance.

maybe you should find out from the schools you which to apply if TOEFL is necessary. UHouston says its a must for Nigerians

Start writing your SOP and tailor it to the requirements of each school according to info on their Admission requirements page.

Contact your undergraduate lecturers and let them know you plan to apply around December, so they can start writing a suitable LOR.

These are the steps I'm taking now.

Bridgeport is okay. However, i dont advise anyone to come here. Its a small private university with very little funding opportunities - funding exists but the competition for funding is extremely fierce. Secondly, the school is filled with indians. You almost forget you are in america cos of the crazy international composition . Adiitionally, a large percentage of faculty members are non americans, and a pretty good number of them are not very good at lecturing. That said, even as bad as the school may be, its way better than any Nigerian university.

One last observation though, i have noticed Nigerians over here are very selfish. Unlike the chinese and indians, Nigerians prefer to go solo and do things all by themselves. The chinese and indians, on the otherhand form very strong local communities and help themselves in getting jobs and academic advantage.

This Nigerian mentality is evident in this thread. When people come on here, acquire knowledge and move on without returning to contribute to thread that helped you succeed. Am not saying there are no good Nigerians over here, there are. However, there are the exception and not the norm.

Bro, I'm so keen about UH, but their insistence on TOEFL pisses me. A good score in verbal should make up for that. How sure is securing 100% funding there? What's the total tuition and the duration of their Msc in Pet eng?

I don't know how funding works. Some schools say they try to fund all graduate students (Masters and PhD), some explicitly say funding is competitive for masters students. But na God sure pass. I believe packaging a solid application and submitting it before the priority deadline will increase your chances.

Most Masters courses can be completed in 3 semesters (18 months) and fees varies. It can be based on semesters or per credit, check the school's site.I'm still in Naija.

The ish about getting the total tuition is that on the school's portal, they break it down per course per semester. Hence, you can't exactly decipher what total you will be paying. What are some of these schools you know that try to fund all graduate students?

You can choose to be pissed or be funded. Your choice. Compared to the verbal section of the GRE, Toefl is a walk in the park. So why would a test that would give u funding piss you off? Abi u no like money

Not all schools need a 26 on the speaking section for a Teaching assistantship position. I used to think so to. Some take at least 23, others even allow 22. I had a 24 and I got a TA.
Regardless, to be safe, aim for a 26 so you can get a TA in any school in the world.
