One thing that is constant with the agitation of Ndigbo is the lingual and cultural affinity with any community they say it's part of them. I have never seen them go into another language group in Nigera and assert their cultural affinity, even on their closest allies the Ibibios. Here is a video of KCPP Foundation of Britain on their charity tour of Opobo and its remote areas. Listen to the language this old illiterate Opoboan is speaking.https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hO3xLlXf-8M 3 Likes 1 Share |

How do you get to know about foundation? When I was serving at Opobo town, I usually join the foundation boat to khono\ Nkoro to see friends, those whites that live in Opobo are good, they opened an internet cafe where we browse then, (got info the the foundation is closed) I worked under Kingsley Oko Jaja as the principal of the secondary school. There is the man called Sam Accra Jaja (nwoke obioma) that usually give us bags of rice and bags of pure water that he produces, not forgetting Gbarasi, captain ogolo, those folks made my stay worthwhile, I love opobo town starting from kalaibiama, epelema, queens town, minima etc I participated in inec. Voter registration 2006 and was able to visit all the war canoe houses, starting from Jaja, Oko Jaja, Ogolo, Epele, peterside, ogolo and John Africa at the back of corpers lodge, at Nkoro I made friends at Opurokuno, diepreye, kpopko etc inenjoyedmy stay at Opobo Nkoro Deltagiant: |

DikeOha882: The controversy surrounding native Igbo speakers outside the SE ignited my interest in digging into these communities. You could see the depth of the Igbo Izugbe spoken by the old man William Africa. I have not been to Opobo though i had Opobo friends while in Lagos and every thing about them was usually Igbo. 2 Likes |

Very true, their Igbo pure that every Igbo man will understand, more Igbo Izugbe than my own dialect, one thing with Opobo is that its too expensive ranging from drinking water, food etc as at when I was serving there, we usually buy a satchet water #20 before Sam Accra Jaja started supplying us water every friday free of charge, a plate of food then at council guest house was #300 but at water from near the jetty, its a bit fairer then, Opobo people are well educated, goal getter and proud people like their brothers Deltagiant: 1 Like |

Re: RVSG Wanted To Force Ijaw Language On An Igbo Town Opobo But They Rejected It by Nobody: 7:39pm On Oct 31, 2015 |
They don't speak any other language except Igbo all through, they trade daily, though the market is a small close Jaja's compound Deltagiant:would have love to show the picture I took close to Jaja statue but you know how this forum is. |

DikeOha882: Really? Nigeria is in for a long haul. No wonder the current king, Douglas Jaja, is ever Igbotic in every thing he does. If and when the SE decides to have a seaport at Obuaku, the Jajas for certain, will be very happy about it and will give their nod. Don't bother about the pictures. Thanks 3 Likes |
Re: RVSG Wanted To Force Ijaw Language On An Igbo Town Opobo But They Rejected It by Abagworo(m): 7:51pm On Oct 31, 2015 |
Facing facts Opobo is neither Igbo nor Ijaw. It was founded on two pillars with Igbo as the language and Ijaw as the nomenclature. The culture is a mix of both Igbo and Ijaw while the founding population was Igbo, Ijaw and Ibibio. The uniqueness of Opobo needs to be preserved for the sake of their unborn generations. Anyone trying to change the language from Igbo to Ibani is as guilty as one changing town names and titles from Ibani to Igbo. 1 Like |

Deltagiant: Opobo people have never ever denied their igbo root. They actively do everything to attach to rest of Igbos. They attend every major ohaneze meetings and don't have "AWA OYEL MENTALITY". if Igbos leave theis cesspit, I have no single doubt that they will join 100%. A massive sea-port will be built in opobo for big ships with a corresponding river port in ogbaku for smaller vessels. 3 Likes |

Yes bro, Opoboians can't be a hindrance to the development of Igbo land which they consider as their own, going by their relationship and yearly visit to AmaIgbo, Jajas home town Deltagiant: |

Abagworo: If thats the case then nobody is Igbo because every igbo group has at some point intermarried with surrounding groups/kingdoms including ibibios, efiks, edos, ijaws, igalas. If we are to go based on your comments, then all the igbo clans bordering other kingdoms are not igbos. But opobo people see themselves as mostly igbos even with the intermarriages that occurred with the neighboring groups. 4 Likes |

DikeOha882: NAIJASOM:Given the disposition of my Opobo friends, i'll agree with you guys that they are highly Igbocentric as the founder's family. The Jaja family is so much attached to their ancestral home in Amaigbo that i don't see them being against the dredging of that 3O miles stretch from the Azumini/Imo confluence to the estuary. As you rightly said, the best thing would be to have one facility directly built at the estuary (Opobo) and the other one upstream at Obuaku. This will finally remove Opobo from the rural map of Nigeria. A win win situation. I see it as feasible cos the friendhip and blood relationship is there and steeped in a very rich history. It is equally cost effective visavis the river Niger. 30 nautical miles is achievable. Great. 5 Likes |
