My dear friend, really sorry for your loss. Perhaps you compromised your pin or someone had access to your ATM Card. It quite a pity you are not on the inside to understand how these things work. Someone used your card, not UBA the only thing they can do for you is to provide you details of the transaction. like a member advised here the next point of action should be to go through legal means (get an injunction to freeze the account and use police to arrest the person which First Bank should assist you do since this fraudster is their customer (They know him better)
why was the alert not sent immediately?

Dear friend, i empathized with you and I read your story with great worry if all you said about the bank is true. However, i have this professional and personal experience for you, Please visit the branch and demand you want to speak to the BRANCH SERVICE MANAGER of the branch. Write a comprehensive complaint letter and make them acknowledge receipt of it. Then ask them for a when to come for a feedback, if after the suppose time given, nothing was done, u could take them up seriously.
However, the personal experience i had and have render in cases like this was to deposit a reasonable amount if money in the customers account, deactivate the ATM of such customer, then put the account on NO WITHDRWAL STATUS and high memo for ARREST, such customer are always greedy, hence they will walk into the branch to want to withdrawal same, thereby getting them apprehended.
But i belived if you have showed the bank how mad you can be and make the day works unbearable for them, the manger or someone would have shown empathy.

Straight to the bank tomorrow. UBA bye bye. They are always withdrawing from my account and they never give anything, unlike my Fidelity. I detest Ecobank also. They frustrated me as an undergraduate. Thank God they can't lay hold of my BVN. I dash them the 1,000. grin

It is a pity how some people come to a public forum like this to blame a bank for their mistakes. Your PIN and ATM Card should be safely and secretly kept. Work into any CBN branch and lodge your complaints.

desperatem:
I will try to make this story short. I started banking with UBA early last year. Apart from outrageous tranSfer charges, postage stamp charges and very slow service I think its a good bank. I have never had issues of unauthorized withdrawal in my account until August 2015. An unauthorized ATM transfer was carried out in my account on August 8 2015 twice and UBA did not send me any alert for the 2 transactions. The first transaction was NGN 180,000 and the second was NGN 30,000. I got to know about the unauthorized transaction about 1 month few weeks later when I traveled out of Nija. A customer deposited some money in my account, so when I received the alert (My MTN number was Roamed for alert purpose) I knew instantly that about NGN 200,000 plus to NGN 300,00 was missing in my account. I can't wait to get back home to confirm it. Because of this, I came back to Nigeria Ealier than planned (My arrival date was scheduled for 15th November 2015).

When I got back to Nigeria, I visted my branch and I requested for my account statement, I got back home and was going through the account statement that was when I came across the transactions, I reported immediately to my Branch and I was asked to write a letter which I did. My account officer said maybe someone I know used my ATM card to do the ATM transfer but I told her its not someone I know and my ATM was not used for the transaction because I live alone, none of my friends or GF visited me during that period because I was busy planning my traveling and my ATM card is always in my wallet and my wallet is always on me. In the letter I wrote, I requested for the footage of whoever did the transaction and the account information of the beneficiary.

A couple of weeks later, I go a call that they have concluded the investigation. They were able to get the beneficiary account information but they said no footage was sent along. It was a First bank account so they couldn't view the the account holder's information except the name and account number that was sent from First Bank head office. Since UBA got that information, they stopped working on getting to the bottom of the matter. They said they can't work in hand with First Bank to apprehend the suspect. They said they are waiting for the day the suspect will come and do any transaction on his account even if it's 2050.

I got tired of waiting and I visited a friend who is working in First Bank last week, He checked the suspect's acount details for me because I collected the account number from UBA customer care. When my friend checked, he showed me his picture, I swear I have never seen the guy in my life. He went through his transactions as at October, we discovered that the guy withdraw all the money immediately he finished the fraud and he has less than NGN 1,500 in his account. After that revelation, I visited my UBA branch and I narrated everything to then, now they take me serious a bit but they later said "still there is nothing we can do" after then, I withdraw all my money from the account and I deposited it to my other bank account with another bank. I am going there today to withdraw the rest of my money. UBA is not a customer's bank. Its very useless bank and if you keep your life savings with them you might end up having a HIGH BLOOD PRESSURE. I just shared my experience with UBA with my fellow nairalanders so you can all be wary of UBA. If you have an account with them, you better take all your money from there to avoid story that touches.

Your comments/contributions and better and quicker way to go about this is highly welcomed. Thanks for reading. I hope you learn a thing or two? If anyone experienced ATM fraud before please share your experience with us.

SAFE.

You gave up wayyyyyyy too easily. Banks fear nothing as much as lawyer/legal drama. My friend,n that is all you had to use. You lost way toooooooo much to call it quit with them. All you need is a strongly worded lettter from your lawyer with new proof you have gotten from your friend @ 1st bank. Along with recepits to show you were abroad at that time.

Do it and see result. Strongly worded letter with a threat of pursuing the case in court. Let your lawyer include like a 2/3 weeks notice period before you commence action in court.

Come and thank me later.

Personally.. I feel it's unfair to criticise a bank that went this far to resolve your issue. First Bank should have been able to assist further based on their KYC scheme.
I'm surprised to see harsh comments from previous posters about the bank because since I started using UBA in 2012, I've witnessed significant improvement in customer service. They can be frustrating atimes as regards signature verification as one would have 2 sign severally to do a single transaction.

Contact your account officer to assist on this

Majority of the banks in Naija are the same in the aspect of refusal to cooperate with fellow banks in fraud investigations.

I stopped banking with UBA as an undergraduate some 4yrs ago. I'm not surprised you experienced that scam when you mentioned UBA. They are rogues in that place. But pls don't let them go free. Sue the f***ing ass of that bank so they can learn some lessons the very hard way. Your money is meant to be very safe with a bank. What is the duties of the Anti-Fraud unit of UBA if not on issues like this! Make millions from them pls by going to court and claim damages. UBA my ass

The moment Nigerian banks started issuing ATM cards I knew it was an accident looking for where to happen. I have never used a Nigerian bank issued ATM card in my life although I have 3 that are all not activated. Recently they've been trying to make me activate mobile banking app and Ive bluntly refused. Any transaction I do in Nigeria I go in person.

Some peeps who don't even know how a uba brnach looks like are here spewing thrash. As far I am concerned, UBA is the best transaction bank in nigeria, hardly any kind of transaction they can't do for you. Their customers serivce is top class. Atm terminals are always paying cash. What more can a bank offer. UBA is africa's global bank.

Worst bank in Nigeria

Typical Nigerian on social media who's got nothing to say but would rather not keep quiet.

OP like I said earlier, pls contact UBA via cfc@ubagroup.com and use "desperatem" as the subject of your email. You'll thank me later.

You'll also find out that those branch officers who handled this wrongly will be severely punished too. There are always a few bad apples in every basket. It is through reports like yours that they are identified and dealt with.

well I think this has to be reported to authorities cbn needs to find a way to manage these frauds. this same thing happened when I was a student but I was using intercontinental bank then. I was in my first so I did not have much. the customer care officer said the transaction was carried outon the machine I used most frequently so I must be the one who withdrew the money. another staff stealthily agreed to help me and two days later he started acting funny. I gave up and closed my account. I am trying to say that this will happen to anyone until CBN is aware and ready to control these fraud. thank God BVN is here to stay. we all know that there is no organization in nigeria that care about what its customers or patronizers pass through all they care about is the bottom line figures. and thank God for successive government who have refused to give tge citizenry a voice in the corporate world

The fact that his card was accessed is obviously not UBA's fault. Where they erred is the reluctance of the lazy branch staff to investigate. All they had to do was forward the complaint to Head Office which they didn't. I believe once he contacts their Customer Fulfilment Center (CFC), he'll be sorted out and those silly staff will be dealt with. I've had this experience before. A friend also had same experience with Heritage Bank branch staff recently.

Honestly, should the bank be liable for a transaction performed on an atm machine using your secret detail know only to you?
My advise, collect the fraudsters address from your guy in first bank and storm the area with boys or efcc.
What are you saying?
The transaction was not performed on an ATM...Friend? It was perfromed through an ATM... & it reflected in their DATABASE....
The transaction occurred on their Data BASE!!!!
The ATM is actually a mere & exclusive Access to the DataBASE!!!!!
