CabbieAC,

I don't agree with you about the Tribalism argument for why we don't do well in football...

We don't even make the effort, we are bookish, parents don't encourage extra curricular activities as a tribe...

I read something about how OJB Jezreel had to lead a delegation to beg Wizkid's parents to allow him explore his musical talent...

Olamide said he was on the streets for 6yrs & used to sleep on the floor of ID Cabasa 's studio cos his parents were not prepared to hear anything that isn't about his studies...

I have a cousin who could play well (subjective) as a teen but he never took it further cos he knew his parents weren't bout that life, Life hasn't been especially harsh to him but he never ceases to talk about what could have been if he had had the "liver" to pursue his dreams.

Till date,he still plays set with his neighbourhood friends...

So Aare, you can't complain about not being lifted when you didn't even raise ya hands..

Tevinsolt I might have to be posting this your comment on every page ooo.Ha!

tevinsolt:
Lack of foresight, begets chaos. The premise this nation has built upon would never allow it, to move forward ever. Forced unity can only last for so long.
Biafrans (as they refer themselves) were forced into staying Nigerians after their first attempt of seceding. The first trial is all that's needed to sow a seed that will continue to bear fruits season in and season out. No matter how long Nigeria lasts, unborn generations from the SE will continue to be a pain to the Nigerian establishment. They will and can never be satisfied with Nigeria, someone will always try to avenge the deaths of his/her kinsmen whenever they feel they are being suppressed, in our time or the future. Massob, and as of recent Ipob headed by Nnamdi Kanu are testament to my account.

Nigeria needs to let go of Biafra, and a possible result is the total disintegration of Nigeria as we know it, which is fine, it is not a do or die affair like many take it to be. We can all separate and focus on developing distinctly.

I'm Yoruba, If Biafra wants to go, I say the Nigerian Government let her go, so that the important things in life all Humans regardless of race, religion, tribe long for have can be achieved.

let all Yoruba on NL stop giving undue attention to Biafran threads, and stop unnecessarily projecting a "can't do without the you attitude." They seriously think Yoruba can't do without them. And what concern of ours is with SS being a part of Biafra anyway?

I can't speak for the hinterland but in Lagos soccer was an institution. On Island, from Campos to Onola, Berger, Ebute Alagbafo, they had seasonal tournaments with trophy. Some of these guys ended in clubs like Nepa, First Bank, Customs and so on. My father kept newspaper clippings. At these same fields they had high jump and pole vault competitions. Beside these they had recreation centers in Oko Awo and Oke Arin. Weightlifting was in there, gymnastics with the horses, the suspended rings, they had boxing training...all kind of indoor sports. There was Biney sports center in Yaba for bsketball and swimming, as well as another located close by national stadium. So i know about the potentials and missed opportunities.

In my opening to this discussion series i started by saying "opportunity cost".

Whats the vision, what are we in sports?

We need to be truthful to ourselves. What is sports to a Yorubaman? Where in our history have you read about domination in sports?

Lets put things in perspective....amongst the Negro race Yoruba is far advanced in practices demanding cerebral energy than physical energy. Our physiological makeup is tailored for thoughts, observation, reflection and innovation.

Ibos are excelling in sports because its in their history and they are physically endowed for it. We need to find our comparative advantage and dominate it....in fact monopolise it for its rewards!

Yoruba is world best in Table Tennis. We have consistently dominated Table Tennis in Nigeria and Africa because its a game of calculation and strategy. If Ayo was a international tournament we'd be top rated because it fits in with our makeup - calculation and strategy! Ive been playing snooker and billiards since I was 16, at one time it was my source of income....and I find it muvh more easier to coach a Yoruba person than any other ethnic group because of the ease with which they lock in.

Heroism in Yorubaland is perfected throuvh acts of shrewdness and decoy...hiding your play hands from the opponent! Think of the range of sports that need that skillset...physical sports do not make it.

Heroism in Iboland is recognized in acts of physical bouts - wrestling! The wrestling champion is the village hero. Hence they are built naturally for physical sports and require zero thought process or calculation to win.

Lets give them what belongs to them. Lets find ours and champion it!

The irony of the point you make about physical sports is that there are more Yoruba sons in combat sports than any other group in Naija. I watch a lot of Boxing and UFC and the names I see these days are Yoruba.

Boxing
Anthony Olufemi Joshua - 2012 Olympic Heavyweight Gold medalist and current darling ofHeavyweight Boxing
Larry Ekundayo
Lateef Kayode - very funny chap
Segun Ajose

UFC
Jimi Manuwa
Oluwale Bamgbose

In terms of spread, Yoruba are into more sports although the dominance is only in Table Tennis. The issue I tend to have with Yoruba in sports is one of discipline. Sport requires discipline but current players aren't too disciplined hence the limited success.

Have often wondered why our lads ain't overly represented in football in particular and am kinda gleaning some real factual information from you guys as to reasons behind in this and it's kinda making sense all over again.

Interesting one of the earlier posters mentioned how parents in naija literally beat the crap out of their kids if they attempt to be more sporty than academic which i wholeheartedly agree with having witnessed same all thru my growing years. My late dad, despite being a football enthusiast especially our local leagues and a part time member of the supporters club, he just could not bear having one of his kids play football! some irony you would say?! and to think bar myself all my other sibling played at every stage of the school years but breaking into the professional arena was an abomination . . . . . sad u would say.

You just had to become a doctor or lawyer or accountant! anything outside that won't fly or it might just have to be exorcised out of you grin . . . . . those where definitely a different era and time in our lives, now as parents would be nice to give kids all the support they need cos you just might never know what this support will give birth to in the no distant future

Agberos are everywhere, Madam. You'd know this if you have been to other parts of the country.

Go to Onitsha motor parks and see a wild type of "Agberoism". You will know our boys are still learning. Or you think they don't have NURTW and RTEAN in other parts of the country?

We are into sports too, you know. Segun Toriola and Funke Oshonaike dominate in male and female table tennis respectively.

Yorubas dominate extensively in boxing. The average Yoruba guy in Mushin is a natural boxer.

I also follow Chess in Nigeria and trust me, Yorubas dominate there too, even though the current top rated Nigerian chess player is one Kighiga Bomo from Bayelsa state, I think.

We might not be too visible in football, when compared to the Flatheaded ones but trust me, Yorubas do well in other sports.

It might interest you to know that the present female African footballer of the year, Asisat Oshoala is Yoruba. Nigeria's leading all-time goal scorer is Rasheed Yekini, followed by Segun Odegbami. Yorubas sef dey try for Football ooo!

You i right to an extent, i visit oshodi and mushin quite often and i see these boys wasting away, i wonder what they could have become had they not taken this route.
Funny thing is that a lot of these guys ended up on the streets while doing sports, most especially boxing. You need to see what training "tarmacs" of old have become.

The earlier we accept and fight this problem the better o

You forgot NBA and NFL (though there are more Igbos in the league, there are also loads of Yoruba guys and more are coming through).

We're pretty decent in track and field as well. Dasaolu has the second fastest time for 100m in British history and Philip Idowu is the 2nd greatest triple jumper in British history. Not forgetting the greatest British Decathlon athlete - Daley Thompson - who won two Olympics gold medals and broke the world record four times.

David Alaba of Bayern Munich is also Yoruba. And apparently his dad took him to Nigeria to play for the country when he was 15/16 and he was rejected. Yet the same guy is leading a mediocre Austrian team to the Euro Championship in France. Guardiola called him the most gifted/versatile footballer on the planet and he can play any position. The guy isn't even 26 yet, but he has won everything to be won in football at club level.

Much as we might want to think this un supporting attitude is more broadbased across all ethnic groups rather in my own humble opinion and observatio, this dismissive attitude towards sports career seems more prevalent within the subsets of parents from the west of Nigeria nee yorubas.

We were indoctrinated more to think white collar career than any other thing . . . . . .

When we are done with sports, i want to talk about terrorism, radicalisation and extremism in the SW.

Its no news that anywhere you find muslims in large numbers, the above is a worry ( i am muslim BTW).

I know Lagos State government has a firm grip on who becomes Imam in every mosque including private ones. I hope other SW states are coping this model, we already have a case of the knive holding BRITISH boy with a Yoruba name, we have also read about DSS operation against boko haram affiliate group in kogi (next door neighbor).

We don't want our kids getting radicalised, i hope DAWN or whoever is incharge is seriously taking this up.
Re: Yoruba Commonwealth and Politics by Ritchiee: 3:13pm On Nov 20, 2015
I quoted my bruv shymm3x and deleted it, remembering that he is a Yoruba dude and Yorubas are known for their intelligence from time immemorial.Brudda...there are two sides to every issue, one side is right and the other is wrong, but the middle is always evil. The man who is wrong still retains some respect for truth, if only by accepting the responsibility of choice.

But the man in the middle is the knave who blanks out the truth in order to pretend that no choice or values exist, who is willing to sit out the course of any battle, willing to cash in on the blood of the innocent or to crawl on his belly to the guilty, who dispenses justice by condemning both the robber and the robbed to jail, who solves conflicts by ordering the thinker and the fool to meet each other halfway.

In any compromise between food and poison, it is only death that can win. In any compromise between good and evil, it is only evil that can profit. In that transfusion of blood which drains the good to feed the evil, the compromise is the transmitting rubber tube. You dig?
We are a family...If someone were to harm my family or a friend or somebody I love, I would eat them. I might end up in jail for 1000 years, but I would eat them...lol

I wouldn't put it down to a yoruba "faux pas" per se . . . .but we have heard one too many of our friends, neighbours, relatives and siblings whilst growing up "subtly" complain about a typical yoruba parents attitude towards child discipline, child psychologist will let us believe if you provide both emotional and psychological support to kids at an early age in discovering their innate talent especially in sports, this helps to bring the best out of them and they go on to being an happy and healthy citizen and much more!!!

Much as this support is not there for the asking . . . . . me think over parenting killed many yoruba parents in this regard, whilst other tribes parentally (for want of a better word to say) . . . . permit their kids to have a kinda "free range" upbringing and as such they can roam around the neighbourhood with the peers and they might just b lucky to discover a sporting activities they might love and get interested in, i know in their eyes the parents were looking out for us and want us t be the best, but really the best comes in different jobs and skills and not necessary from being a white collar worker . . . . .sighs

But to some extent we (yoruba kids) were constantly reminded the path to being a doctor or a lawyer ain't thru football then hahaha . . . . .guess we know better now.

Yeah i agree to some extent ain't an exclusive yoruba thing but this over parenting more rampant within our ethnic subset

Not to digress from the point under discussion but you recall in 2008/2009 some American banks and corporations were classified as "too big to fail" and given Govt protection against market forces.

Football, Basketball, Baseball, Hockey are also in the bracket of American institutions that will never be allowed to fail.

In Europe and South America Soccer is more than just being called a sport!

A food vendor alone with a concession contract to supply food and refreshments at a major soccer or baseball game will take home about $10,000...this about 6,000 pounds sterling.

We do not yet operate our sports on that scale. We did not have a cinema flavor that has appeal around the globe twenty years ago. Until very recently we did not have a music genre that plays on airwaves round the globe, until recently. No doubt, whatever we touch in Nigeria turns to gold!. European teams will continue to recruit our players, so there is a open channel...wide open for seeding and developing sports in Nigeria as a big money maker.

When that day comes, one of the many ethnic groups in Nigeria would wield the power and occupy decision making. Which group would it be?

Let me reference Segun Odegbami commenting not long ago that a lot of people who he believes were fans of Orji Uzor Kalu, his competition for post of FIFA President, would prefer a foreigner is given the position if Kalu did not get it.

Sports has, in a way, become instrument of political negotiation. We cannot afford not to be the decision makers for mega sports wealth in Nigeria
