If your not street wise, I'll advise you say the truth how you came about the school. They will ask you 1 question and twist it at the tail end of the interview session to see how truthful you were. Why California? & Why did you choose this school may not be the same but the answer to each are intertwined. You can't afford to say something materially different from the other.
In my case, It wasnt twisted, they asked same question at the middle and tail end of the interview session. - Why did you choose this school among others you applied for? I didn't waiver, repeated same answer.

Why California? Talk about the industries that abound there for experiential learning (Internship) to enable you gain exposure before coming back to Nigeria to set up your biz, relate it to the school research progress also, you may inform the VO that it was not about the state but about the school that informed your choice of state. Your school may not be highly ranked but the course program is rated highly among other school. It's a <5mins Interview. Trust me, you'll face many more challenges here, you have to do your research alone to save cost, achieve more

Yes, I wasn't required to sit for GRE. You can, so as to improve your standing. I only submitted my TOEFl result, my secondary school transcript and the transcript for the 6 month language programme that I did in China.. I'm going for undergraduate study and would be studying social work. Have you get in touch with the student advisor??.. You should try and ring her. She will direct you on the appropriate documents to submit...

I have been studying this thread like a bible but looks lyk my case is different. I have a Bsc degree with CGPA of 4.12/5 and I am currently doing a masters program in Nigeria (completed course work with distinction) about to round up my thesis. The masters program is becoming long and endless due to the persistent and never ending strike hence I want to apply for a master's degree in the US. Now the problem is I wrote GRE in 2014 but scored very low (292) and I don't want to re-write GRE but intend to write TOEFL. Pls does it look like I stand a chance securing admission not to talk of Visa and what are the suggestions you think will better my chances.

Don't say your school is highly rank if u can't defend it, because some schools there are also highly ranked, now, look at it in dis way if a VO ask u why do u then choose your school over Harvard or Princeton University, what would u say?. VOs are human beings like us, talk about the research going on in the school dept. Or rather PM me I have some questions and answers that can help u draft yours and I can still give u more hints. You will be approved for sure. I did my interview yesterday and I got my visa without stress. It is God's favour but u have to be prepared and ask some gurus here questions, don't be shy, I asked many questions from sensible gurus here and it worked for me. Very easy if u know God and ask frequent questions.

Sorry but you need to feel relaxed while talking to a VO.

Secondly, you have to make out your own answers which should be unique as well. The VO played on your intelligence to know if you're an intending immigrant.

Hope you listened to previous interviews sounded somewhat tricky. The answer to this question is "maybe, maybe not."
