I heard shouts, people were screaming at top of their voices. Young men wielding long whips and sticks and machetes. The shout grew and cracks of whips followed, painful groans rented the air, not that of children, not young men but old men and old women. Cries from the old as the young meted out on them cruel treatment of a mindless nature.. Different kinds of relics, talisman and clothes of different colours were taken out from their homes and burnt while they looked on with whips on their back.. What was their crime? they were accused of being witches and wizards and their involvement in the traditional practice was supposed to be proof of this. Many of these youths have relics of Jesus hanging on a cross, Virgin mary standing ever pious, pastors smiling in pictures hung on their homes and religious talisman hung on their necks. Why is it that the old men are accused of being evil for keeping a relic of their own belief but you have yours tied around your neck? This was a sad event that took place right before my eyes in my home town.. Old men and women were accused of being evil, their homes invaded, dragged out into the cold, beaten and disgraced with no shred of evidence to support the idiotic accusations but mere speculations and nonsensical effects of abject phobia for flimsy superstitious suspicion. Nobody cared for the evidence of their crimes, no human bone or skull was found on them, no gun was found on them they only kept relics of their beliefs and that automatically makes them the bad ones. This is the case in a thousand and one places through out Africa not just my home town have seen such mindless idiocy from the youths but the whole of southern Nigeria is neck deep in such imbecility. Africans needs to grow out of these sheepish superstitions. Africans needs to stop being Afraid of imaginary foes. Africans needs to out grow the unjust lynching of old men and women and even little children with the tag of witches and ogbanje. Africans needs to stop regarding little illnesses to be attacks by demons. Africans should outgrow idiotic fear of terming owls witches when they cry at night Africans needs to stop regarding convulsions to be demonic possessions. Africans needs to stop pointing at rats running about the room to be witches Africans needs to outgrow blaming an imaginary succubus and incubus for sleep paralysis. Africans simply needs to outgrow sheepish baseless superstitions that are only products of their own fears and unbalanced mind insecure in their own self. the hold such simplistic superstitions have on many minds is disturbing, the rate by which violence is being meted out on unsuspecting souls because of insecure unsure speculations and assumptions from a fearful mind is demeaning. when will we outgrow the fear of abstract things that are not there? when will flimsy placebo not being dubbed the work of spirits. when will pastors and men of god stop dipping africans deeper into these superstitions and fears of ancestral spirits and grandma witch craft. When are we going to outgrow falling prey to cheap con men wielding bibles and roman collar suits accusing an uncle from the village of being the architect of our economic conditions. when will africans learn one can never change an economic status by praying for it, if wishes worked we all would be richer than Bill Gates now. when are we going to untangle our minds from such retarding and demeaning beliefs roped around our fears of the unknown or the insecurity of our beings. If we are going to grow as a people we need to first of all develop psychologically and ideologically and this means we have to shed much of these disturbing superstitions and mindless idiocy and primitive state absurd superstitions has thrown us into.. 19 Likes 9 Shares |

It's the results of a failed educational system. The very same things we argue against everyday. The tendency to ignore the visibly obvious, to dwell on the invisible and imaginary. 3 Likes 1 Share |

krattoss:I can only talk to the ones i can talk to (my relatives), you can imagine what 60% of the youths are part of. . . If you utter something against what they are doing they might beat you join. it was a sad sight to be totally honest... hearing things like "they are the ones killing our youths" "they are the ones tying women to be barren" "they tie the stars of youths" "Holy ghost fire!!!" and many other absurd notions. Had to leave and go home afterwards...Such people might add to you the victims if you ever speak against their imbecility in front of them 3 Likes 2 Shares |

So fucking true. Just last week, my neighbour heard weird noises and Lo and behold, her "Family witches" were pursuing her. Africa is deeply immersed in supersition and instead of education to dispel such nonsense, our "educated" youths do the same! Friggin sad, really. 2 Likes 1 Share |

SirWere:Over here, i was lying down in my room one night and an owl cried.. you need to see the reactions. they were shouting and cursing on the poor creature, holy ghost fire rang from every angle, some where already speaking in tongues casting and binding.. such baseless fear for something that isn't even dangerous to anyone... the worse form of prison is the prison of the mind. these people have held these fears to be true and so are trapped in the prison such imaginary fears produce.. i was like "these moro_ns are afraid of an owl, didn't they notice owls are night birds.. Laughed my ass out that night.. Religious beliefs provide imaginary solutions to imaginary problems and imaginary battles against imaginary enemies 11 Likes 4 Shares |

It's simply pathetic. These are the same people that will happily burn up a theif and still pray to their god at night with the belief they are going to heaven. I tire 6 Likes 2 Shares |

A nigerian man would eat crap in the morning, afternoon and evening. Do no exercise, won't do anything about pot belly. When he gets his first heart attack at 47, he'll blame witches. A student will skip classes, not take notes down. Rely on dubs to pass an exam. When the dubs are wrong and s/he fails, a witch did it. In my mind I'll be like "take responsibility for your actions you ignorant f*ckstick. 9 Likes 2 Shares |

@Johnnydon22m You are Ibo right? The word Superstition, is it an ibo word? Someone said something like, anything that has an English name, is in Englishland. The last time I checked, Once upon a time, Britain was burning their witches alive. And today, if there's any place in the world that the practice of witch craft is prevailent, is in London. I mean, today with all their technological advancement. And am certain that they are not africans. 3 Likes 2 Shares |

Nicely said but Johnny change your font,I'm straining my eyes to read what you wrote. Nigerians and superstitions, when they get sick with fever, they'll say it's the handwork of their enemy,I just laugh at such delusions. So many false beliefs and yet they wallow in the hypocrisy of their religion.Well to each man his ways, some are straightforward than others. While certain individuals face their truth, many Nigerians would rather create a lie and live happily in the lie. |

Anas09: In his defence, 'other developed countries once practiced witchburnign so we must do it" So with all u learnt is school, you are yet to see that all these things are mere superstitions that have been used to force the people to live in bondage? Since u have been believing in witch craft, how many bridges or roads have u seen it build or destroy? Are u so proud to imbibe senseless practices that would take us nowhere from insignificant few in developed world? 1 Like |

Anas09:Are you for real? So because the English once burned witches we should too? You are saying that we should just copy whatever the English do/did without using our brains? Clap for yourself. (walks off and plays "Colo-mentality" by Fela) Anas09:Oh ok, so the English are currently practicing witchcraft and blaming witches for their problems the way we do in Nigeria? The English are currently beating and burning "witches"? smh. Here are some relevant lines for you from Colo-mentality by Fela: E be say you be colonial man You don be slave man before Them don release you now But you never release yourself 5 Likes 2 Shares |

Pls don't get me wrong, am not making a case for witchcraft. Am a Christian. But the Op sounds like superstitiion is just an African thing. All am saying is that, these things are done everywhere and not peculiar to Africa. Am not implying that because these things are done there, we shd do them here. 1 Like |

Anas09: So as a Christian, which superstitious believe do u adhere to? Do you believe that if you say "I bind you satan" one imaginary demon-like being will suffer. And you have to say this over and over again so that this demon will continue rising and falling... And u do this because? 3 Likes 1 Share |

Hahahahahahaha. @ Frank. if you were indeed a demon, trust me, you won't want to meet me. am not boasting sir. I know in whom, I have believed. it just that, you don't believe these things, but believe me, they are real. If you have a negative spirit in you, immediately I meet you, I'll have an unrest in my spirit. if I sleep in the same room with u, its going to be battle till day break, and trust me, u won't win. 1 Like |

Anas09:Last i checked i didn't type in Igbo and it also affirms that these ideas are recognized as they are now. You forgot to add witches (Druids to be precise, which is a religion on its on but tagged witches because of their belief and practises) were burnt under the influence of the Church .. (Christianity) This also confirms my thesis on the dangers of superstition on the minds of people.. it makes primitive savages out of modern humans 3 Likes 2 Shares |

To say the truth, you are right. But witches exist o... Hmm... The whole world is controlled by the power of darkness. And mind you, satan is the brain behind technologies and other scientific advancements. |
Re: Africans And Superstition by johnydon22(m): 10:14pm On Dec 17, 2015 |
HCpaul:No they don't... witchcraft is no more real than prayers working.. these practices, sorceries are all roped around the psychological mindset of both the person practising it and the person afraid of it. If you start imagining monsters in a dark stairs, you will see that you will tend to fear these imaginary monsters and at the same will swear they are real.. #Sighs Damn here we go.. how did we get to this Its quite ironic you just typed this with a phone and used the internet, baffles me how you are quite okay using these handiworks of satan 6 Likes 3 Shares |

witches are real, many of my brothers were killed by witches, in 1992 they came for my junior brother in our room, I don't know what woke me up that night, but I believe it is God. with boldness I say to the witch, get out from here, the witch walk backward into the wall and vanished. Two weeks leter, mysterious fire burned down the shrine in the village. 2 Likes |

johnydon22: That means that the major reason why people disbelief in the existence of God is because they have not search for him. 'And God looked on earth to see if anyone is wise enough to search for him.' Go and search for him bro.... Cuz anytime you said that witches don't exist, i just laugh and consider your spiritual embryonic maturity. |
