Hello VO,
My name is Oshin Gbenga, I have been to USA embassy in Lagos to apply for my F1 visa and have been denied twice in November and December 2015 respectively, I was denied under section 214b.
I once applied for a b1 visa in 2013 to attend my organizations annual convention (National Association of Seadogs) but was denied, at that time when I applied the name of my wife was Titilope Adeola Oshin, but she later died in 2013. I remarried in 2014, and while applying for my f1 visa in 2015, I changed my spouse name to Oshin Olajumoke.
Please VO, I will like to know if this is a reason for my denial.
If this could be a reason for denial, then kindly advise on how to prove to the consulate that the reason for the change of spouse name was the death of my late wife, as my interviewer never asked anything concerning this.
Our plan was for her to later apply for a B1 visa to visit me later in the year since she won’t be accompanying me to USA.
Thank you.

Thanks VO for the enlightenment. I have plan to apply for b1b2 visa next months but have no travel history. I have a niece who is a US citizen with her husband but do not primarily intend to visit her. I only wish to spend two weeks on tourism. Would my no travel history be a barrier for visa issuance?

Good Morning Sir/ Ma,
Please I have a question, had submitted my family ds-160 forms but just discovered that our middle name appears first on the DS 160 confirmation page instead of first name as it appears on the int'l passport. For example DANJUMA GARBA SHEU Instead of DANJUMA SHEU GARBA on the passport but we have corrected it on the profile, and receipt but we have not pick a date for interview. Hope we have no problem or we need to consult desk officer?. Thanks

Next time you are going to the embassy, go with your family.

Family vacation........

[Quote author=franktalk007 post=41072966]Dear Abuja NIV team,

Please what could have gone wrong? I attended my interview on 8th December, i was denied base on flimsy excuse.

Here is the summary of my interview;

Q1. Why would u like to visit US at this time? I am visiting US to attend my cousin (mentioned his full name) graduation ceremony at Grambling state university and the event is coming up 18th Dec 2015

Q2. What do you for work? I work with xyz bank as bla bla

Q3. How long do you wanna stay in US? Just 2 weeks

Q4. When is your take off date? I will take off Dec 14th and return 28th

Q5. Are you married? Yes, i am happily married

Q6. Do you have kids? I have two lovely daughters

Q7. Why would you like to spend your Xmas with Cousin and leave your family behind? remember Xmas comes once in a year? Then i said myself and family already agreed that i go and return to spend new year here just to honour my cousin invitation.

****Then he handed over a green letter to me and my passport. But before he did, he touched the white and change his mind to the green because i can see inside his cubicle

When is the earliest time i can re-apply as a new year begin and i will be planning on my next year leave early enough?

Hello deji79,

We can handle the questions, thanks. But counseling someone to lie about their purpose of travel is horrible advice.

Dear Consular Officer,

Merry Christmas to you.

Please, I need your advice.

I had applied to US embassies for visiting twice but, I was denied and advised to reapply. A very close friend of mine in the US wants me to come visit his family. Though, I applied alone then but, now with my family. I am self employed with petroleum products' marketing as nature of my business.

My close friend (US Citizen) is suggesting that he should send the invitation letter to my wife this time for the entire family (5 of us) for her to use her vacation period for us to come over to the US early next year 2016. My wife has been working with Federal Government of Nigeria for over 7 years hence, we do not have any problems with all her official documentations including vacation letter. My personal company documents are also intact too to support the application.

Do you advise that we go ahead with the above plan or how best would you advise us to go about it? I have a well funded account I can present as the sponsor for the family trip, my close friend is willing to provide all the supporting documents as well.

I await your advice.

Thanks.

Hello Phemmie72,

1) Consular Officers never advise people to reapply at the window after a refusal. Ever. Saying that on your application or at your interview damages your credibility. If you were qualified, we would have issued. You were deemed unqualified. You may be allowed to reapply but we certainly aren't telling you to or advising that course of action.

2) If you were found to be unqualified for a B1/B2 visa, we strongly discourage you from applying applying again unless you feel your circumstances have changed. Read the letter you were given. Is your life different now than at your last refusal? You must do what you believe is right.

3) Invitation letters are not required to visit the United States. Having friends or family there neither hurts nor helps your application. YOU have to qualify for the visa.

Abuja NIV Team

Dear Officer,

I intend to invite my 3 siblings for my daughters bday early Feb.
This is their 1st niece and all man is too excited to meet her.

They are 2 boys aged 25 and 27 and 23 year old girl.
Girl is in final year pharmacy and 2 boys are post NYSC looking for better job but currently running popsy's business!

I applied for my parents in Jan and they got 2 years visa. They came for 2 months in feb when I had a baby and left hurriedly lol. Cold was too much !

My problem now is"
1."what are the chances of them getting a visa for a visit?
2. Should I request a group interview for them or Everyman on his own?
3. I don't want dem to burn 150k applying & traveling and not getting a positive result.

Pls, advice!
Thank you

Hello Udiboy,

1) We don't give odds. This isn't a rowdy gambling hall; it's a matter of applying US visa policy. However, if you don't think they're qualified, you probably should tell them NOT to apply. The mere fact that you're asking on here and sharing your concern about "burning" money indicates you have doubts.
2) We don't do group interviews anymore so they'll just apply as individuals though they can interview together if they are all blood siblings.

Hello olusola009,

If you are only going to visit, a B1/B2 is the appropriate visa. If you are going to live with her, she will need to file an immigrant petition. The only documents required for a B1/B2 are your passport and confirmation page.

Hello gbengaoshin,

First, whenever you are completing your online application, it is important to enter any other names you have gone by in your life. Not doing so would look like purposeful misrepresentation of aliases.

Second, feel free to share that information if you make the decision to apply again. HOWEVER, if you have been found ineligible twice in the last two months, it is unlikely the adjudication and its outcome will change unless your circumstances have.

Third, I'm not sure why your wife would need a visa to visit you if you yourself do not have a visa?

Hello zollar4life,

Let's start with the big question: WHY ARE YOU YELLING?

1) There are many reasons that applications undergo mandatory administrative processing.
2) You should certainly contact us and ask what the situation is, we apologize for the inconvenience.
3) No. Unless we asked him to come to Abuja, please don't spend time and money coming here. Drop an email at ConsularAbuja@state.gov

Hello Chuksyno,

Prior travel is not a requirement for visa approval. However, lying about travel or adding fake stamps to your passport could get you arrested. Just be honest and explain the situation to the interviewing officer.

1). I am sorry. I didn't mean to quote anybody or that somebody told me but, I was trying to refer to it as included in the refusal letter that I may re-apply if I decided to. Thank you for the clarification.

2). Yes, my life is very much different now than at my last refusal and my circumstances have greatly changed positively

3). Thank you for clarification on the invitation letter

I would work towards the family application when we would all be available for the vacation. I would appreciate your advice on any personal and family requirements I may need for the application.

Dear VO,

I am in the United states currently finishing my bachelors program in chemistry. I have not renewed my F-1 visa since I came. However, I have been pursuing my studies full time. I graduate in may 2016 and I plan to go unto graduate studies in chemistry (pHd) in the fall of 2016. I plan to return home because I have missed my family so much before I can leave for graduate school. I have a couple of questions if you do not mind.
1. Will my non-renewal of the F-1 visa impede my getting another one for my graduate studies?
2. Are there any other concerns my situation might pose to the consular officer?
3. Since every admitted prospective pHd student in the school i applied to, have their tuition waived, will i still need to show evidence of financial support as I would have without the school support?
Thank you so much.

1) I hope the difference in last names don't hinder my application as I intend to explain he has always sponsored my education.
2) I have previous travel experience as a language student in Russia, will that count?
3) I am engaged with 2 kids but not yet married is that proof of sufficient ties home?

Hello tmangrenadier,

1) As long as you stayed in status and did not leave the United States, it shouldn't be an issue.
2) Did you do something bad that we should know?
3) Showing evidence of that waiver would be helpful.
