Let us be realistic with ourselves,no religious brought bad things for we humans.I mean,no religion encourages bad and evil things. But we humans, turn everything upside down by attaching all sort of evils to religious.I want to let us somethings that,it was through religion we come across God not any of the scientist.which we all know certainly that Our God exists.religion preaches all the following things to us no exploitation:
Existency of God
Angels
Heaven
Hell
Evil people
Good people
Love
Tolerance
Fighting for freedom
Giving alms
Righteousness
Endurane
Patients
Please my fellow brothers,we all know that God exist, either Christians or Muslims,we should not allow any philosophers who does not believes that God exists to lead us astray and make us to be abusing God,what we just need is to be very careful of all the doctring and preaching that we would be hearing from our religious leaders.
Let us tolerate each other, let us be one,let us say no to tribalism, religionlism, let us face the problem together like a bunch of broom.
Bunch of whathuh!!!... U are on point thou but some broomsticks among us get THORNS, as in Long pointed THORNS!!!... We ought to tell them their mistakes just to be sure that every one is carried along and continue maintaining our peaceful nature...AFRICA i know is truely blessed but due to GREED and OVER SABI, we have been diversified... BUT i still get hope we wil reach there.

That the prof doesn't seem to like religion doesn't mean that religion is altogether bad, at least speaking for Christianity. Its the misinterpretation of the doctrines of religion that make it seem bad.

And yes, people can and do hear God.

the man is write, but is people like u that i hate u cant wake up one day and tell people to stop their beliefs, simply becus u dont have one.people change dially.christains converts to islam, islam converts to christains, atheist converts in and out.that how life is.people who say religion is stoping africa growth are right, but them again, are they not religion in other continents, yes, have it make them back ward no.it is religous extremism or fanatics that are really the problem, mixed with a great deal of tribalism and bad leaders
What continent are you comparing Africa with, Compare the level of irreligious people in those continents "That isn't backward" and you will get the whole picture. No matter how educated you are, No matter how wealthy. Religion can take away your reasoning capability. Tailor it however you can, Refined it, Reform it or whatever. Religion is still religion. That's why a world renowned neurosurgeon like Ben Carson can believe the Pyramid in Egypt was built by his Bible Joseph to store up grains, That's why some of the best Islamic scholars believe the earth is flat. Let's just face the fact, Religion has to go. Especially when you can't keep it to yourself, Especially when you are still noisy about, Especially when you are given special privilege like not paying tax and the right to put others in an Inconvenient situation. The adherents of religion have to change not the irreligious.

The WORST is that U see LADIES seeking consent from Clergymen first, before they can submit themselves for a CAESEREAN SECTION instead of their husbands.

PLEASE, between ur husband and ur Pastor who is more honourable in this respect.?

Women are the WORST HIT.

No religion ,I repeat,no religion said that nobody should not reasoning at all.let us becareful of what we will be saying about religion at times.even what that prof had said did not totally condemned religion, but trying to tell us not to be following our leader dogmatically.even the traditional religion believes God exist, now which one should we choose religion or science which part of it's studies tell us everything just happen like that! Even traditional religion believes that there is heaven and fire too!whatelse. Brothers and sisters,Christians and Muslims,we have to go back and sit tight, let us study and read our holy books very well, and understand the message they are passing to us!our religious religious leaders ae exploiting us because they know that we have no time to read all these books, that is why they are continue to tell us what we want to hear, every time salvation, money, salation, money.

Re: Religion Has Killed Rational Thinking Of This Country - Prof. Osundare by tosyne2much(m):
I'm inclined to agree with the professor. As a matter of fact, religion is beginning to be more of curse than blessing, and this is because we don't think critically and analytically, hence, blaming all our misfortunes on ill-luck on witches and wizards and/or God's wishes

Many at times, we fail to accept the responsibility of our errors and misdeeds but will attribute them to God's plan

Take for example, you would see some religious zealous in school attending church service every now and then with the belief that only God can make them excel in their academics endeavour( of course it's God). But it is paramount to know that you have to pay the sacrifice towards this accomplishment by reading profusely rather than devoting more of your time attending church programmes, then spending the remaining time on your academics.

A driver will not take safety precautions and when he's involved in a ghastly motor accident, we begin to say that it was the devil"s plan to take his life

I have come to realize that many people serve God but only a few of them really understand how it works. However, a chronic sinner with right priorities and analytical in thinking, is most likely to succeed than a religious zealous with wrong priorities and poor analytic thinking

TheGreenDay:
"Religion has killed rational thinking in this country. I say this all the time, our country is still in a pre-scientific era. That is why things are like this. We don’t think logically; that is why any ruler, any fool would seize the reins and rule us, because we would always find an excuse for being ruled or being led by the nose.

Not long ago a pastor said he was between two cities and he discovered that the fuel in his car had run out. He actually checked and saw the fuel in the car was completely gone. But because of his act of faith and on the strength of his prayers, he was able to do two hundred miles on an empty tank!

When he declared this testimony, people clapped and shouted “ Hallelujah!” I never heard anybody say how can?"

"Nigerians don’t ask questions; that is why the imams and the pastors lead them by the nose, and the politicians also complete their humiliation and disempowerment. And between the clerics and the political functionaries, there is a very close liaison.

It’s a kind of power structure; one controls the political, social realm, the other controls the spiritual, metaphysical realm and they are together. Many Nigerians are not rational, interrogative people.

In fact, in this country today, if you are the interrogative type you are easily labelled, branded, and condemned. People even wonder: why are you always asking questions?"

"Another problem: well, our people are docile and the reason why they take all kinds of cheating is that many of them envisage themselves in the position of power someday, too.

If I am X and the oppressor is Y, and the oppressor is oppressing me, stealing all the money, and making life difficult for me and my children, I am not likely to attack him. I’ll pray to God to let my own “miracle” happen so that someday, he will go and I will be in his place. No; I am praying for him to go but for the structure to remain."

Professor rNiyi Osundare (born in 1947 in Ikere-Ekiti, Ekiti State, Nigeria) is a prolific poet, dramatist and literary critic. He gained degrees at the University of Ibadan (BA), the University of Leeds (MA) and York University, Canada (PhD, 1979). Previously professor (from 1989) and Head of English (1993–97) at the University of Ibadan, he became professor of English at the University of New Orleans in 1997. Niyi has a wife, Kemi, and three children, two girls and a son who still lives in Nigeria. His deaf daughter is the real reason Niyi settled in the United States. She could not go to school in Nigeria so they found a school in the U.S. for her. They moved with her so Niyi and Kemi could be closer to her.

He has always been a vehement champion of the right to free speech and is a strong believer in the power of words, saying, "to utter is to alter". Osundare is renowned for his commitment to socially relevant art and artistic activism.

This man is my Kind. True scientist and Learned people are always logical and rational thinkers. We ask Questions and not conclude on religious sentiments. No wonder Africans are living in a pre-scientific era. Our only problem is that people who don't understand us condemn us so much including our family. You buy an olive oil that was originally meant for cooking and you use it on your sick child who is just about to die. Foolishness! I have a family member who I heard used his "chosen" vest and soaked it in his drinking water believing he will get healed but finally died. Nigerians, learn to ask Questions. No wonder we have the worst Physicians.

Your "sharap" is uncalled for. The Catholic Church is the only church Jesus Christ left behind. What you have just written is strictly the OT. Mind you, what you called the bible is an historical account of the origin of the Jews. The bible was written in Aramaic and for you to really understand the bible you must be knowledgeable in that language.

Also, it is instructive for you to note that the bible was written by men like us, capable of making mistakes. That said, I don't doubt it as a vade mecum of the Christian religion. And for my argument that God is a spirit, see John 4:24- "God is spirit, and those who worship him must worship in spirit and truth."
1. Jesus appeared to his disciples in the New Testament according to John 20 : 1-29 .

Jesus , a spirit , could talk to them

John 20 : 19
19 On the evening of that day, the first day of the week, the doors being locked where the disciples were for fear of the Jews,[c] Jesus came and stood among them and said to them, “Peace be with you.”
2. The disciples could see Him

John 20 : 24-25
24 Now Thomas, one of the Twelve, called the Twin,[d] was not with them when Jesus came. 25 So the other disciples told him, “We have seen the Lord.”
3. Thomas could speak , touch hear and see Him - there is communication .

John 20 : 26-29
26 Eight days later, his disciples were inside again, and Thomas was with them. Although the doors were locked, Jesus came and stood among them and said, “Peace be with you.” 27 Then he said to Thomas, “Put your finger here, and see my hands; and put out your hand, and place it in my side. Do not disbelieve, but believe.” 28 Thomas answered him, “My Lord and my God!” 29 Jesus said to him, “Have you believed because you have seen me? Blessed are those who have not seen and yet have believed.
4. Paul the apostle . Jesus appeared to him and rebuked his actions and wickedness to Christians

Acts 26:12-16
12 “In this connection I journeyed to Damascus with the authority and commission of the chief priests. 13 At midday, O king, I saw on the way a light from heaven, brighter than the sun, that shone around me and those who journeyed with me. 14 And when we had all fallen to the ground, I heard a voice saying to me in the Hebrew language,[a] ‘Saul, Saul, why are you persecuting me? It is hard for you to kick against the goads.’ 15 And I said, ‘Who are you, Lord?’ And the Lord said, ‘I am Jesus whom you are persecuting. 16 But rise and stand upon your feet, for I have appeared to you for this purpose, to appoint you as a servant and witness to the things in which you have seen me and to those in which I will appear to you,
5. Paul reiterated his experience and the experiences of other Apostles whom Jesus appeared and spoke to . How could they identify Jesus since you cant see spirits ?

Clearly seen in :

1 Corinthians 15:7-8

7Then He appeared to James, then to all the apostles; 8and last of all, as to one untimely born, He appeared to me also
Enough lessons for the day , I guess

Mopolchi:

Please this is not the jokes section . You've got good jokes up ya sleeves already . And where's that written in the bible ? You mean the idolatrous Catholic Church or the deceptive Catholic Church ?

Nobody hears or see any God. Anybody who claims to do such, is showing an early sign of serious bipolar psychosis disorder known as schizophrenia and can lead to a full blown mania if not treated in time.

It a situation where you hear voices that that are not really there and you feel it's from God. It is accompanied with the delution of having the ability to do impossible things like casting out demons and healing the sick. Majority of those who sufferes from the disorder see themselves as god. It is cause by stress aggravated from activities like praying for long hours and not feeding well.

Over 3% of the total population in the US are suffering from it and believe me millions of nigerians are also suffering from it without knowing because they fill themselves with the thoughts that the voices is coming from God.

If you see anyone claiming he can hear God's voice, please save a human life by advising him to see a psychiatrist so that it doesn't turn worse.
Wrong.

This experiences are different from what u call 'hallucinations' or 'psychosis'. They are spiritual and can't be percieved by the physical senses.

I can't explain these things to u even if I wanted to. Even if I tried to, there's not way I could convince you. They are better experienced.

But make no mistakes: Folks do hear God.

From your comment its like u don't believe in God.

If thats the case, then we shouldn't be having this conversation. It will lead us nowhere.

I think Africans/Nigerians generally are too lazy to think because logical thinking is hard work so they use religious sentiments as an excuse.
The Scriptures say that God has given the earth to the sons of men to dominate.
But we prefer to push all our responsibilities to God rather than engage our god-given resources (such as our brains) to think out solutions to problems.
All too often we call on God to come and do what he has already given us the power to do.
For instance, how is God going to come down and help us build roads?
Don't we have the money and resources to do that already? If we have not been able to construct roads despite all the available resources, it is because our house is not in order. We should simply get our acts together and do the correct thing rather than disturbing the peace of the Almighty with prayers.
At a particular time, when Moses was in doubt of his abilities, God asked him, "what do you have in your hand?"
The same way he is asking Nigerians "why do you always cry to me concerning the state of your country? What happened to all the resources I have blessed you with?"
Let us learn to use our God given resources properly first and if after using those resources properly we are still in need of help, then God will come in.
U r a sensible person. Well said.

Re: Religion Has Killed Rational Thinking Of This Country - Prof. Osundare by Nobody: 1:35pm On Jan 03, 2016
The thing I find amusing about religion is this, if you were born in the North to hausa fulani parents, you most likely would be a moslem, if you were born in the south especially the sout east, you most likely would be a christian. Thing is by fate the Usman Danfodio Jihad was defeated at ilorin, otherwise we would be an entirely Muslim country. Most people are christians or muslims by pure accident of birth depending on what faith their parents practised. You actually had no choice in the matter but we accept it and carry on like we know for sure....we dont know jack shit!!!! If the white man never colonised Africa, the same people shouting blood of Jesus would be stauchly defending what we now call African traditional religions

The religious map of the world shows that predominance of different religion in the different areas of the world is simply a reflection of explorations, conquests and colonisation. You conquer a people and you impose your religion, because religion is how you control people. Fact is the religion you carry on your head like it's the be all and end all is just an accidental consequence of when, where and to what family you were born. Anything that is accidental and random cannot stand up to scrutiny. Religious followers will condemn you because questioning their religion that theyve practised all their life, is questioning their very foundations, it's like questioning whther your father is actuallly your biological father, it shakes your entire foundation. But the truth is just as you beleive your parents arent your parents, how many people have done a DNA test because it has been shown scientifically that close to a third of all children were not fathered by the man the call Dad! But just like religion, youve been told and beleive right from birth that this is so......it doesnt mean it is.

My spouse & i were having this same convo just before i came across this thread!!

I can tell you for a fact, despite not being in church (family road trip) that the sermon today is going to be about giving & it will remain so till end of march...

All in a bid to prime the weak hearted to part with a full month's salary in the name of "first fruit offering" ..cheesy can't form queen kong & say i haven't fallen in the past but I'm wiser now... I give my "tithes & seeds" to people in real need (without fail), only put enough in the offering bag to cover Generators & sundries...

I can't point to one charity my home church is actively contributing to, neither are there any kind of CSR we are a part of !! I also am not ready to fund anyone's opulent lifestyle neither am i interested in stadium like worship auditoriums.. cool

Been "advised" to stop going to church cos of my numerous "questions & complaints" but that won't happen cos i can't front my own , & i need to belong someplace, moreover the empiricist haven't been able to win their own argument either.... grin cheesy

This is an example of what the professor talks about the absence of rational thinking. If people are questioning your religion, you dont defend it by quoting your religious scripture, you quote scripture to those who have accepted your faith. If in a court trial i question the credibility of a witness, you dont respind by telling me what the witness said or saw, you respond by affirming the credibility of the witness, you respond by convincing me that the witness is credible, only when I am convinced of his credibility does what he has to say matter. Like the Prof said...absence of rational and critical thinking.
