A lot of undergrads saying things they know nothing about. How can someone say engineers are better mathematicians than mathematicians? It's like saying doctors are better in law than lawyers just because they took some law courses in medical school. That's the joke of the century.

Mathematics and Engineering are very different fields. Mathematicians are deep thinkers, they formulate theories out of nothing. Engineers apply these theories in solving real world problems. Engineers are not trained to be mathematicians. They only apply mathematics relevant in their field of study! That does not make you a mathematician.

To all those wannabe engineers claiming to be better mathematicians than mathematics students please I urge you to help the mathematics community solve some of its life long problems. Kindly go to the website of the Clay mathematics institute. They are lots of unsolved mathematics problems there. Help us solve them since you're better mathematicians.

After your engineering degree try a post graduate program in pure mathematics. If you're even admitted in the program I can assure you it will be he'll for you. You study calculus, Algebra, vectors, ODE and the rest only because they are RELEVANT to your program. And I can assure you you don't go deep into these stuff. Even the maths students don't go deep into these stuff at undergrad level.

What you do at undergraduate level is just an introduction to mathematics. Try a PhD in mathematics and you'll appreciate mathematicians. Seasoned engineers who are worth their salt will not underestimate the intelligence of mathematics because the know as engineers there's a limit to their maths!

World class engineering firms consult mathematicians. I know so because my lecturer during my undergrad days was consulting for lots of engineering firms ranging from electrical to civil.
It gets to a point during engineering innovations that you need groundbreaking mathematics to achieve your goals, in such situations the engineer ALWAYS turn to the mathematician because that is his expertise.


My advice to these young engineering students is that you study hard, be a good engineer and practice your engineering. I can assure you that if you do, it won't be long before you realize your mathematics is very insufficient.

Engineering is not hw it used to be neither is mathematics, a math graduate don't end up teaching. One of my uncle read engineering, chemical while the other read mathematics. FYI there are two bodies governing engineering in Nigeria . NSE and COREN, you must be a member of the later to join the earlier and I should inform you that being a member of any of these body is a win win either as employee or if you are running a self bussiness .

I can't argue on this topic cos the truth is glaring. Engineering students can't challenge maths students because both are different fields. Engineering students study what's relevant to their pursuit but mathematics students study mathematics in its entirety. So I don't see any reason for this argument.


Individual's mathematical prowess and dexterity differs both in mathematics and engineering students. Mathematics students can attack questions engineering students couldn't attempt and conversely.


So this blind argument yields no rigid point to me actually. Whatever we do, let's do it with all guts and vigorous vehemence.

At BSc Level yes, an Engineer gets to do a lots of the sciences depending on what branch of Engineering you study. So basically an Engineer does some mathematics, physics, chemistry etc. However, when you get to Phd Level, then an Engineer becomes the scientist. He become the mathematician, the physicist, the geologist, the Biochemist etc.

But really an Engineer is the best profession in the whole wild world.
