Yes they can. I have an aunties who don't speak hausa at all except fulfulde.
My parents told me that when i was young i could speak fulfulde very well. But once i began schooling and mixing with other people,,, it all disappeared

Yeah, that is what typically happens when some people join school the majority and dominant lingua franca (Hausa) takes over. To maintain your native language, you often have to practise it and speak it with your family members not to lose it.
