I like to know your views on this topic, is this often the case in Nigeria? I will not deny that I have enjoyed some undeserved privileges thus far in life because of the way I look, but I guess its not enough to arrive at a conclusion. Please I like to hear your views and experiences on this

Studies have shown that attractive people are usually hired sooner, get promotions more quickly, and are paid more than their less-attractive coworkers.

Attractive people earn an average of 3 or 4 percent more than people with below-average looks, according to Daniel Hamermesh, professor of economics at the University of Texas at Austin and author of the book "Beauty Pays: Why Attractive People Are More Successful."

Researchers have studied the concept of beauty as a factor in a person’s success over and over again, and in multiple ways. Beautiful people tend to bring in more money for their companies, and are therefore seen as more valuable employees and harder workers, according to an article in Psychology Today by Dario Maestripieri, a professor of comparative human development, evolutionary biology, and neurobiology at the University of Chicago. A door-to-door insurance salesman is better able to sell to customers who find him attractive, says Maestripieri, because the customers will be more likely to buy if they think it will increase their chances to have sex with him. Maestripieri calls this principle “the pleasure of dealing with good-looking people.”

“Good-looking people are more appealing as potential sex partners,” Maestripieri says, “and [so] other people choose to interact with them, to spend time near them, talk with them, buy insurance from them, and hire them as employees.”

Hamermesh, however, believes that it's not just the sex appeal that makes attractive people more successful. He writes that attractive people tend to have desirable personality traits, like higher self-confidence—likely a direct result of their good looks—that appeal to employers.

“Beauty may just reflect reflect self-esteem. Perhaps people’s self-confidence manifests itself in their behavior, so that their looks are rated more highly, and their self-esteem makes them more desirable and higher-paid employees,” he writes. “Another possibility is that beauty and the attractiveness of one’s personality are positively related, and that it is the general sparkle of one’s personality, not one’s beauty, that increases earnings.”

There might be an iota of truth in this but I know that if you can apply the principles of success, you will be successful even if people don't find you physically 'attractive'

So if you have two persons with exactly the same capabilities and qualification for a Job and you only have a vacant position would you tend to favor the better looking person and give him/her the job?

I will do the needful by favoring the pretty/handsome person ... no one likes to spoil the looks of his or her office be employing ugly employees

I worked briefly for a blue chip investment firm in Nigeria as an investment analyst and while I was their, I noticed that the very looking people in the marketing segment did not have to work as hard as the rest to meet their target. The not so good looking ones had to work extra hard, were better coordinated and kept more accurate record yet the attractive ones closed and retained more clients than them.
Even when this good looking sales executives made errors that cost their clients loss of money (like not sending the clients their investment Option letter in time) the clients are more lenient compared to the way they react to the rest. I am talking about high net worth persons here, the cheapest product of the firm was 1million Naira.
There was this time my bosses client sent him an email authorizing him to liquidate his investment and bring him a check, the investment plus interest was running into 50million Naira and my boss an average looking very smart man had tried his best to persuade him to leave the money, but the client stuck to his gun saying he needed to clear some consignments and would return the money at a much later time. The timing was bad as my boss wanted to make AGM in the company that year and liquidations would definitely not help his ambitions.
After all his plans to persuade this client not to liquidate failed, my boss sent this very beautiful lady (a senior sales executive) in our office with the check, he said I should accompany her but he said we must come back with the check! Omo over sweet was worrying the lady...chai..I swear if this lady markets you, you will sign any document she gives you.
We got to the clients house in my oga's official Prado looking very sharp, and then we met chief he forgot about the check for a second and was asking the lady if she just started working with the firm, omo see discussion, the lady is equally intelligent. When chief asked for the check she showed him but told him respectfully and almost at tears that she cant give him the check because it would affect her appraisal as she is the new business development manager of the branch, chief confuse, he said he really needed the money of which she told him to look for another source, she asked him to leave the money for another 90 days because her appraisal would have been done by then. Chief agreed, omo we returned back to the office with the check o! My oga was so happy, forming master strategies but sister Jo was just too gbasky... fine people move business I tell you.

All other things being equal, your look is an added advantage. It could be hard for 'ugly' people at times but in all, when you are exceptionally good, your look becomes less important

lets face it, the man in question wasn't in need of the money, if he seriously need that cash not even jezebel clad in gold would've convinced him; no give this bimbos hope, Nigerians more often than not treat money to a higher standard when dealing with fellow Individuals.

Bro I used to think like you before I gained more experience. If you know your stuff, you can persuade anybody especially Rich people to do seemingly impossible stuffs for you. Guy do you know what professionalism means? at 26 years I was advising the biggest boys in South/south Telecommunications industry, head of depts in the likes of shell/chevron/elf e.t.c (not that they knew my age though, but it didnt matter), they would not make a serious financial decision without talking it over with me. I have on a lot of cases told them not to liquidate their investments and source alternative means to finance their pressing projects and they often adhere to my advice. impossible is nothing. It may not make sense to you till experience it.
