I have read it said that 'fg has exclusive rights' but ' Constitution backs state government to set up corporation to exploit mineral resources in their domain'.

However my question is this how many states that really done it? Is there an unseen hand that does not really allow states to do that?
yes, the unseen hand is the monthly largesse from oil money allocation

This is very good news. I hope this new policy will be strengthened with all necessary legislative and constitutional backing. State would no longer have any excuses for being parasitic.

I think this is an avenue for states to look into their solid minerals for revenue generation on behalf of themselves and the federal govt.
The private companies, the state, its people and FG will benefit depending on the sharing formular.
Now let's see if the wailing wailers will direct some wailing to their respective state governors.

Good move except the states will simply hand over exploration to Chinese firms!

Who is still in doubt about the CHANGE Buhari administration represent? Except there is a river blindness in the wailing communities. cheesy

Meanwhile this is another form of federalism we have been yearning for. It ripple effects will lead to competition among federating states and subsequent development that are people oriented.

Long live PMB
Long live Nigeria

Keep deceiving yourself and I guess you will stop even if Nigerians beg food from Ghana cos the crumbled economy.... This sai Baba thing is no more love but hate

Great development.

Now states with solid mineral can improve their IGR and rely less on federal government.

This will also create jobs of youths in such states.

A lot of untapped resources in Nigeria e.g. Bitumen in ondo state etc.

From Dennis Mernyi, Abuja

NIGERIA’S 36 states can now individually explore and exploit mineral deposits in their domains, provided they go about the exercise in manners that will not interfere with locations already given to other stakeholders, Mines and Steel Development minister, Dr. Kayode Fayemi has disclosed.

Fayemi, while acknowledging that the Federal Government enjoys exclusive rights to mine minerals across the country, noted that the constitution encourages states to either set up their own investment corporations or partner private investors to exploit minerals in their domains.

He disclosed this in Abuja, while playing host to the Lagos State Commissioner for Energy and Mineral Resources, Mr. Wale Oluwo, who led a team from the state to make some requests before the Federal Government in respect of its minerals resources.

The commissioner identified the minerals in Lagos to include: limestone, silica, clay and a few other resources which abound in large commercial quantities in the country’s largest industrial hub.

According to him, “We estimate that we have limestone in the region of 12 million metric tonnes around the Epe area. We also estimate that we have silica sand of up to 200 billion cubic metric tonnes around the Ibeju-Lekki area. And the third one, which is clay, is about 180 billion cubic metric tonnes around the Lagos East.

“We’ve been carrying out various geological surveys, both aerial and on the ground, and we believe that data is key. So, when you are in a position to make that decision as to gathering data with respect to where solid minerals can be identified, we are assuring you that in Lagos, we will put our resources behind your efforts.”

So Niger Delta states are free to drill their oil right? Watch as they turn around to deny this statement. Has the existing laws been changed to permit this or is it a military fiat?

Its not possible because the constitution will need to be reviews and exploration of solid minerals will be removed from the exclusive list but if they insist why is the FG budgeting billions of naira for oil exploration in Sokoto and Borno

Young woman not every talk abt solid minerals is abt oil. There are more than 50 other mineral resources in Nigeria, in commercial quantity. Most of dem are even in the north.

And FYI, sokoto and borno have high possibility of crude oil discovery in large quantities. Sokoto state is sitting on the ILLUMEDDEN Basin, while borno state is linked with the Chad basin which also has a link to Libya basin that is oil rich.

I know the above because am a geologist....................

U are welcome

Bros! They can't eat it alone because the Federal Govt is still going to partake and that would still be shared across the states as usual. FG has the exclusive rights to all the resources!

Just like oil blocs, some companies already were given the rights to explore and mine certain areas.

They cannot manage the solid minerals in their domain, chop the money and expect to share Niger Delta oil money...
Bubu should not start what he cannot finish.. either we all manage our resources whether solid, liquid, or gas or remain in this rotten arrangement. Any attempt or attempted attempt to make some more important will be strongly resisted.. I mean strongly resisted..

If FG wants to open the door to manage own resources then it's a welcome development..but if the door will be open to suit a particular people. E no go work.. whether na solid, liquid or gas it should be treated equally
