Time To Pick Between Goverment Job And Firm

Nairalanda your advice is highly require in my case. I am currently working with a consulting firm here in Lagos, with no leave, no allowance but the salary make sense. Late last year I just decided I need to leave the place because I see no future there, I began to attend interview for other job, also told a family friend that is a politician that I need job. Last week Sunday the family friend called that she has secured employment for me with a state government in* (One of North central state)
Immediate I began to make enquiry about the salary, from my enquiry I was made to understand is around 34k when I am currently earning multiples of that. My parents are advising me to take up the offer and resigned in my place of work, please Nairalanda should I? I was called today to come and take appointment letter on Monday.

bros! this is your future that is at stake here, & you have come of age where you need to take decision yourself, you don't need advice here or from anywhere else, then why seeking for one, Cuss whatever the advice or decision, affect you alone, or do you prefer a situation where you will say, I shouldn't have listen or taken such advice, So sit down, take your time, think & compare what you want now or the future, look at the advantages & disadvantages of both then take decision. Thanks.

IMO,any jop that will pay you multiples of your stated amount is most likely a graduate job and I don't think any govt agency or parastatal pays as poor as that for a grad on level 7/8.
However, the future of the coy and your job security should be considered.I worked with a firm for 3years and just one Govt regulation/policy affected the company existence and I became jobless.

OP you are from Kwara state, I know cos that's what they pay.

though government job is pensionable and come with no stress, and I believe earning 34k in a north central state is like earning 65k in places like Lagos, Abuja or Port harcout, I won't advice you to leave your current job as more opportunities are in places like Lagos where you can earn 5 folds of the government work coupled with your experience.

State government work in places like Kwara often make people lazy and contribute second to nothing in term of personal development.

My humble opinion though, I am still to get any of these Job.

I will not advise you to take the government work. The salary as you can see is not attractive. The bureacracy is too much. It takes decades to get promoted. By the time your peers in private companies are already Managers and General Managers, you can still be an officer 1 or 2. In most cases, people are attracted to government jobs because that believe they can have access to free money they did not work for, Thank God things are changing now. No free lunch for lazy people in government circle anymore.
Another reason people go for government job is that they believe they can easily run a business by the side. But personally, I don't like government job. However, if you are a professional, and you find yourself at the top, it can be very sweet because of allowances and foreign trips you tend to enjoy.

My brother, I will advice you still keep up with your current job than going for the government appointment. Though government jobs are more secured and stress free when compared to other sectors.

My advice for you, is to save up from your monthly income from your present job that will be enough to establish yourself latter in future to get another additional income which will also serve as a plan B since non governmental jobs are not 100% reliable.

On the other hand, government jobs of today especially state government jobs is taking another shape in the sense of irregular payment of workers salary. If you take up the appointment, what is the probability that you receive your monthly allowance as at when due? What is the probability that the government will not hold up to 6 months salary considering the economic state of the country now even though the pay is not encouraging.

Though government jobs might be reliable, but at this present state, 50% of their workers are suffering from irregularity of their monthly income from the government. Had it been is federal government appointment, the best option in that case is to go for it.

I will advice you stay back and still hold on to your job. I still believe better opportunities will still come your way. Prayerfully decide on it bro.

Please what do you mean by the highlighted part?

OP,
I would have asked you to consider if it was a FG job but for a state government job? I don't think it is worth taking considering you have a better paying job. Also with the current situation where states are finding it difficult to pay salaries and some are looking at trimming their work force.

the devil you know is better than the angel you don't, that a company pays you 100K and you are not happy with the job doesn't mean that you will find happiness when you take up a job offer in government that pays 34K
with the current state of Nigeria economy, where workers are being owed for 2-3 months of their basic salary before they get paid and most states have resorted in sacking thousands of their workers to save their state funds should make you have a rethink before taking that government job.

me thinks that you should keep working in your current job, with a 100K monthly you can be able to save up money and start a lucrative business and still be working. 34K is too small for a man to live from.

It could have been easier if u told us what ur current salary is now..

34k is poor when u are thinking of relocating..

With Buhari on seat that 34k doesn't enter at the right time..

What's ur state of origin?

Which one will help u grow in ur career?

Me I no dey for State Govt jobs unless it is a political appointment which will will expose you better to becoming a future politician but If it is in a Federal Parastatal I will tell you to go for it kia kia because it has a career progression and job security with opportunity for training and capacity building and where with patience you will rise to decision making level.

With the rate at which PMB is blocking the loopholes which I expect some APC states to copy soon, getting extra income from what they call 'chuwa chuwa' in the North by corrupt practice may be difficult. So you need to consider if that proposed income can be sustainable and that implies you will need to learn to cut down on your current expenditure to a salary of N34,000
Like some pointed out State Govt job can make you lazy except if you are a hustler that can put the extra free hours it gives you into productive ventures.

Guy, the decision is purely yours. You need to have dreams of where you want to be, the you that you want to see in the next 5, 10,20, and 30 years. That should form an important part of the parameters on which you will base your decision.
I was in the state civil service as a graduate before i left for my present job in 2008 and i am not looking back although it is tasking, demanding, stressful but also rewarding. Unless it is a federal government parastatal or agency (not ministry), i don't see any government job worth gunning for, unless you are very lazy or you need time for other things such as additional qualification and family...etc

Op, if I were you, I will remain where I am. Since the salary is far more reasonable than the new one. Save enough money and setup yourself if you see no future in the place.
