why did u put igbo as number 7? U should have put us as number 250. Igbo population is thrice that of yoruba in nigeria. Is it because u guys count yorubas in Benin Republic and Togo as yorubas in nigeria during census?

Sincerely i do not think the Ijaws in all the states of the federation they find themselves to be more than 6million.

Bayelsa is the assumed 100% ijaw state. Bayelsa isnt more than 2.5million persons.

In Rivers, Ijoids do not make up more than 30% of Rivers population. That is like another 2million max.

I do not know much about Delta state ijaws but they cant exceed 1.5million.

Ijaws are spread over a large swampy area where only themselves have come to call home.

tonyebarcanista is just exaggerating this ijaw tribe as the fourth largest.
I guess I will give them fourth cos of riverine areas in nigeria. Even in imo rivers we have ijaw people there.

Good historical information.
Before census and population inflation became a political tool, Nigerians knew who was who!

Today, any census figure that doesn't correlate with other biophysical data from the same location remains a farce.
Why is the government afraid of letting people indicate their tribes on the census forms?
Why doesn't birth and death rates correlate with census figures?
Why doesn't school, church, mosque,or other social gathering enrollments back up census figures?
Why are census figures not consistent with previous figures, even when there was no natural or political disasters like war, famine, or disease?

There will never be accurate census without adequate back up means such as taxing every countable adult over a certain age.

Your facts are not the truth.Igbo are not usually the second largest ethnic group in all the states in Nigeria. If Igbo are in eight states, at what proportions? In Benue, Rivers at what percentage .
The contest of the largest single ethnic group in Africa is between Yoruba and Hausa.
Looking at Hausa, they are predominant in Sokoto, Zamfara, Katsina, Kano, Jigawa, they are huge population in Northern Kaduna, Kebbi, Bauchi and significant in Yobe and Gombe. When you add the Fula group you will see their settlements as far as Adamawa. This is the group with high birth rate made swift by religion.
The Yoruba are majority in six states of the Soutwest and Kwara and 3rd largest in Kogi and significant in Edo, and Delta.
The Igbo are often visible because they do not melt into communities they reside, they are largely employed in the same sector of the economy-trading which make them visible. In the North, I think there are more Yoruba than igbo whether in terms of investments or population lots of them being Muslims and even Christians among them largely live like and speak Hausa language.
People should provide verifiable data before make undue claims here.

All my life to be honest I have never met an Ijaw person both in Nigeria and abroad.
Efik/Ibibio are more visible wherever you go.

Here you are: HausaFulani is 29percent. Yoruba is 21 percent. Igbo(Ibo) is 18 percent. Ijaw is 10 percent. Kanuri is 4 percent. Ibibio is 3.5 percent. Tivs is 2.5 percent. Others 12 percent.

Though some ijaws may claim they are spread in over four states in Nigeria, but the truth of the matter is that the are only saying that to grab space and relevance. We must also note that bayelsa comprises only 8 lga s and they are not homogeneously ijaw. Ogbia LGA are not ijaws and u still find isoko people in sagbama LGA .Even in rivers, an opobo man will rather claim Igbo than ijaw, same goes for bonny ppl at least from my work experience in these environment.

oga, the truth is that we can't really say if igbos re more populous than yorubas or yorubas re more populous than igbo. It s only God that knows.
Remember the civil war and the riot/crisis that happened in north and nigeria really reduced the igbo population.

But God is with us, he multiplied us in sevenfold and yet we bounced back.

Concerning who owned lagos state? They re the aworis and the eguns but these two tribes trace their origin from ogun state esp the aworis. They speaks yoruboid dialect just like the way ikwerres speaks igboid dialect. Some believes they re yorubas while some do not believe.

Just like igbos telling us portharcourt is an igbo town cos it s own by ikwerres and obigbos and the yorubas knows this statement as true.
The same way lagos city is own by the yorubas(awori), no dispute about that. Is also the same way the igbo(ikwerre) owns portharcourt city.

Ijaw is only about 5 - 10% of d populatn of Delta State. I'm a Deltan currently based in Akwa-Ibom State. Several times I hav sort to knw frm Akwa-Ibom indigenes if Ijaws actualy own Eastern Obolo, but to my surprise they dismissd d Ijaws claim sayin dat there ar no Ijaw lands in d state. Dat Eastern Obolo pipo speak a language dat is even mor similar to d Ibibio language dan to Ijaw!
