Did all these start after the oil change? What did the expert say is wrong? A couple of issues will cause hard engagement, ranging from worn clutches to leaking accumulators to atf.

Thanks for your timely response.
Before I proceed want state here that am a newbie, what I mean is that this is my first car and the Experience I believed will equip me more. Haven said that, the dude fixing the car has did not mention what the problem was he only said that he can fix it? And that is will cost 35k and I gave him 20k and he is yet to fix my car either has he informed me what the cause of the problem is. from my experience before I paid for the car selecting mood was cool but it comes with a heavy sound when you place either on D or R. But the sound is more when placed on "R" secondly it doesn't have the force to climb any atom of hill when placed of D but when it does innate movement it moves well.

The annoying part he keeps giving me stories that he will fix but that I shouldn't rush, am kinda cool with because I have seen him fix on other people car the reason he stay mute or not willing to fix mine is what I don't know right now am losing it because is over 3 weeks now that I took the car to him courtesy of my mechanic who is not saying any word either.

Please help me.

The technician does not know what is wrong. Tell him to return your money. I suspect your accumulator is leaking or, the clutch pack clearance is out of range, or your primary pressure is too high. Is the gear selection too firm while driving? I actually do not believe in repairing auto transmissions; a complete rebuild is better. My reason - transmissions age and wear, gathering debris, emulsion etc. These clog bores and degrade seals. They fail one at a time so, targeting a failure point gets you going, but there is no guarantee. Unfortunately, you are far away.

By the time he is done, you could be facing a replacement.

Please house, I have a problem with my 2002 Honda Civic Ex. Movement is slow and gear change is not smooth. On the dashboard, the D light flashes and sometimes R light shows when the car is moving & in 'D'. My mechanic says the transmission fluid is very clean and so needs no change. I think he doesn't know exactly what to do. I just got the car and don't know the transmission fluid in it.
What should I do? What transmission oil is best for my car?

Re: Automatic Gearbox Problems by omotades: 11:57pm On Jan 02, 2016
I asked a mechanic who has been servicing my Honda baby boy to service it's gear and engine having realised the atf was not totally pure as I could see some black particles when dropping some on a white paper and the engine oil was due for service. He finished and brought it home after which I discovered the gear was not selecting at all. for any of the gears to work, I would av to press throttle very well for it to move and the moment I take away my leg from the throttle, it will not move again. Be it reverse or any of the Ds. This was never the case before I gave him the car to service. I discovered he made use of one atf called amco dextron iii when I've been using seahorse dextron for a yr now. Can anything be done? Is it only a gear problem? I need answers , pls. This happened today.

Dear all , I need help. About a year ago my car (2004 EOD V6 Auto)gear oil drained and I had to change it (the mechanic used Mobil ATF). About 3 weeks ago I noticed that sometimes if you put it on drive (it delays for about 5-10secs) before moving. I stopped driving it frequently then one day I noticed that while driving at 60km/hr or more,it will suddenly decelerate. If you step on the pedal, it ramps up but does not accelerate. I have to stop and start the car before continuing. Please what might be the problem and solution

I'm tired now. I changed oil to recommended one. one minute it shifts gear accordingly, next minute it will not. It will rev and not shift gear. it works well for like five minutes if the vehicle had been previously parked for some hrs.

What I would advise is for you to replace that transmission.

Everyone - If your atf is dirty, and not giving you issues, don't change it. Keep driving it until it dies. From statistics, which I am part of, less than 20% of dirty transmissions survive atf change.

Automatic gearbox issues have become a reoccuring decimal to any automatic car owner. Slow take off, sluggish acceleration, lack of kick down, loss of drive while in motion, lack of gear change, aggressive gear changes, high engine revs without power in drive just to name a few.

From my observation and the complaints made by some of our customers, these problems usually start from a gearbox oil change that was recommended by the mechanic who then uses the wrong type of ATF oil for the transmission.

Most car manufacturers develop their own ATF formular for their cars.

Honda recommends their own formular ATF-z1 for their gearboxes manufactured between 1998 to 2009 and upgraded to the ATF-Dw1 for gearboxes manufactured from 2010 upwards.

Toyota uses the Type 4 ATF for their cars manufactured between1996 to 2007 and the Toyota WS ATF for ones manufactured between 2007 to present.

Most other car manufactures have also upgraded the type of ATF for their modern cars.

Using the wrong grade of ATF would almost certainly result in a failing transmission. Low grade ATF may not be able to handle the high temperature operations operations of a gearbox. Under very high temperatures, low grade oil loses its fluidity and may begin to boil causing loss of hydraulic functions by frothing or foaming.

Some remedies I have seen used by local mechanics is to further add engine oil to the gearbox in order to thicken the viscosity of the ATF. This in turn puts the pump under great stress as the thicker oil would require more effort from the pump in distributing the oil under high pressure as well as the oil filter which is usually embedded within the transmission gear train. (The removal and changing of all Honda transmission oil filter would require the removal of the gear box from the car and stripping down the gearbox)

The resulting consequence would be an imminent and extreme overheating of the transmission and components such as the friction plates and a rapid degradation of the wet clutch fibres hence the loss of drive, slipping clutch and rough gear changes.

Replacing the gearbox or a total overhaul by an expert would be the likely solution but before then, an inexperienced mechanic would Send you on a wild goose chase by suggesting the removal and servicing or outright replacement of shift solenoids on the outer casing of the gearbox. These solutions Don't last as its just a temporal remedy to a terminal issue.

We constantly repair these gearboxes and those of other makes to a very high standard with 99.9% success rate and we recommend that if you are having serious issues with your automatic gearbox, ensure that the appropriate procedures are followed.

Hello cardoctor,

I have a gear problem with my Honda accord. All measures have been tried and to solutions but I have made up my mind to buy another gear. I need your brotherly advice on what to look at for before buying it because our people are funny when it comes to matters like this. They claim to sell a tokunbo gear but sometime it is a repaired one. Kindly advice on the gear oil to buy, if it requires scanning after/before and other things to watch out for.

Again, lights like ABS, SRS and Engine check displays and the mechanic said if I change the gear box, they will all disappear.

Thanks for your help and other suggestion is welcome.

Hi, please help me out here.
Since we bought our ford Windstar 1999 we have been experiencing that the O/D light begins to flash when we are on the express and travel for like 10 minutes. It does not do so when driven in town where gears have to change occasionally due to traffic and co. We have changed the transmission twice but still the same thing happens over and over. By the time we reach our travelling destination we would be forcing the vehicle to pick up or change gears, then the transmission smokes lightly like its overheating. We have scanned once and it showed speed sensor and some other sensor errors but that was a while ago.
Some said its an electrical issue, some said gear etc...please help...thanks.

My advise to you after you fix this problem is that you sell the car. Ford windstar are very notorious for transmission issues that is why they are cheap. Sienna is a better choice for the case of next time

Good luck

Sir the mechanic has no idea what he is talking about. If those lights are on, its for a reason. Have your car scanned, by a professional. The professional would query the error codes and tell you what the culprit is. There is not link between ABS - Automatic Brake system and SRS - Side Restraint System of your seat belt to Gear Box. Engine Check light - maybe (depending on what code caused the check engine). Have your car scanned. Kindly state vehicle location so as to have a professional referred to you.

Greetings car doctor,

I have just few questions for regarding my gear bix.

1. Which gear box oil is recommended for 2006 Toyota camry.

2. Is it possible to install and convert a 13pin gear box to 10 pin gear box.

3. If yes, how efficient will it work.

THANK YOU
