I don't understand how some people think. The fact that you weren't affected doesnt mean you're a saint or that you're operating on another intellectual level.
All these pro Gtbank arguments would have been valid if:
1. Gtbank had a history of sending emails to their customers intimating them of the fluctuations in the exchange rate.
2. The purported rate [199.4] deducted was below the CBN's rate.
People actually called the Customer Care dept and were told that the rate was N199.4 to $1 and someone mentioned up there that an e-mail should have been sent to that effect. Please read my No 1 up there and you would see that your argument has no basis or are you saying a bank's Customer support isn't reliable anymore?
Also, before throwing your cape on for Gtbank, please ask yourselves why didn't they just cancel all transactions? Surely that would have been way easier than slamming people with negative account balances don't you think?
I wasn't affected but I certainly dont feel better than those who were and I can only imagine how annoying the entire situation is.

I'm not much of a writer, so I am very open to suggestions. So do please suggest and lend your voice. Thanks

Let's all lend our voice to this movement. Whilst this was created as a result of the infamous GTBANK scam of 199N/$, the FB Page was created really as a medium to bring to light and social media the gross injustice being perpetrated against Nigerians by the various financial institutions in the country.

Social Media Handles:

Am fully here with you sir, ALL THIS MUST STOP. We go/bank with other countries and see the way thy treat their customers. If CBN /GTB themselves do not take this up, then I fear the future of this country. And for those saying it won't come alive, let me tell you "you're a real joker"! It's ppl like you that suffers and smiles...and should I say we do not need your opinion on this issue? Was charged an extra 30k plus on withdrawal, and like some for buying stuff online, but I know of some ppl charged over 800k! So bros/sis, kindly keep your opinion to yourselves. AS I DEY SO ENH! While I understand the grievances of those affected, I still stand by my initial thought. I got that same call over the weekend that GTB was doing 199 to the dollar. I recall telling the person not to be in a rush to make transactions until the situation was clearer. Fast forward to days later and there's the kerfuffle about banks and their injustices to customers. GTB could have done a better job in resolving the situation but if the customers had been informed that the excesses would be debited at a later date, most of them would withdraw all their funds to avoid the charges. Debit now, explain later crude as it may have been is messy yet effective. So the outcry isn't undeserved. This however should not detract from the fact that all transactions were legitimate and in exigent circumstances, the bank reserves the right to recoup unsettled balances from the customer no matter how unpleasant it is 99.9999% of the time.

Tia6900 made a point about transaction dates and settlement dates, that is one of the several factors that can determine how much you're billed for an international currency transactions. The treasury dept also determines rates. I've seen similar situations like these go to the CBN for mediation and more times than I can count, the CBN rules in favour of the banks who then out of goodwill sometimes refunds the customer on a case-by-case basis. I do not believe the incident was a deliberate attempt to defraud customers. I also do not believe that GTB should bear the brunt of the difference on transactions settled by customers during the period. The eventual rate of 299 charged is within +/-₦50 of other banks' rates, I don't see their customers starting bonfires. I don't have anything to gain by playing devil's advocate but those of the opinion that no matter the reasons for the 199 charge the bank should refrain from resolution should take a good look at themselves and what they would do if this were a private business and not the universally disdained GTBank.

Hopefully, the public furore would push the CBN to further review the situation with GTB. I don't envisage GT being forced to bear the losses neither do I envisage GTB doing a social service and absorbing the losses voluntarily. Either way, it will definitely not result in a class action lawsuit. I'm curious to see what the eventual resolution would be considering the peculiarities of the situation.

bdavis, mavinc4u et al, more power to your struggle. I wish you all the best.

Cue the insults...

Here is a good place to start the complaint process per the 2011 CBN guidelines as stated on their website.

Summary

This is a Guide on how and where you can lodge a complaint against Financial Institutions regulated by the Central Bank of Nigeria such as Commercial Banks, Microfinance Banks, Primary Mortgage Institutions and Discount Houses.

Contact Your Institution First: if you have a complaint against your bank, you MUST first report the complaint at the bank/branch where the issue originated and then allow 2 weeks (it might be less in some banks) for the issue to be resolved.

If Your Bank Fails To Resolve Your Complain: If after lodging your complaint your Bank still fails to engage you and resolve the complaint within 2 Weeks as provided for in the ATM HELP DESK Circular, you have the right to escalate your complaint to the Consumer Protection Department (CPD) of the CBN.

You can contact the CPD through the following channels:

E-mail: cpd@cbn.gov.ng
Letter: Director, Consumer Protection Department
Central Business District, Abuja

Your complaint should be clear and concise to avoid ambiguity. The Complaint letter (petition) should contain amongst other things the following:
• Name, Address, Contact Phone Number & E-mail of the Complainant;
• Name of your Financial Institution;
• Personal banking details (Do NOT include PIN & Passwords, pleasewink
• History/Date of the transaction in dispute;
• Amount claimed (if any);
• Attach relevant documents to support you claim and;
• Evidence to show that you have first lodged the complaint at your bank.

Anyone familiar with slickdeals will have definitely come across this phrase "In for a cancellation". You know why? Whenever people see deals that are too good to be true they know that the worst that will happen is that their order will be cancelled. Sometimes, in spite of it being a price mistake, the retailer will still honor the orders.
I'll like to posit an analogy (which as most analogies are, doesn't correlate exactly to the situation @ hand). Let's say I walk into a store and see an item for far less than I expect it to be. Excited to see such an amazing deal, I purchase several of that item. I pay using POS and i'm debited @ the exciting rate. I go home and use the items then in a few days, I'm debited extra to cover what the going market rate for the items would be ( I know POS doesn't work like this but let's say it does for this analogy).
What would all you GTB defenders do?

Just check Swtness total eight post since 2009 registered you will understand they belong to the contract staff section of GTBANK so don't blame such people for defending their paymasters cox if they don't and this becomes a legal suit. GTBank will lay them off first so let such people continue with thrash post cox their brains don't process it when GTBank displayed #199 as the selling rate in their banking hall.
Their brains can't process why GTBank should pay you below #199 for inbound but when customers pay #199.4 for online outbound mofos like them suddenly have their brains working at the speed of light.
Brother abeg leave such people's comments cox they really need common sense

Now for all you GTB defenders, @mployer, @shakitibobo, @phony200 and co calling everybody that was affected a thief, please riddle (answer) me this: why did GTBANK just debited @d rate of 199/$ for a transaction I just carried out now? An FX outward transfer if as you all claim, that rate is below the rate the bank sourced the dollar? Or is this also an anomaly

And why, contrary to CBN guidelines is GTBANK charging above the maximum 1,500 naira stipulated by CBN as maximum charge for bank token?
