What Is Recommended To Have A Successful Career In Web Development by kingMelvin: 12:44pm On Jan 19, 2016
Hi Everyone,

I have recently joined the NL forum. I am based in London and I'm currently employed as a senior dev in the uk.
I want to get honest/ realistic feedback or representation of the web development community in nigeria. What are the jobs like. how does the compensation packages compare with other places (like london).

I have read some job adverts online for vacancies in nigerian software agencies. The role descriptions often sound slightly absurd and impractical to expect so many things in one individual... aome come of sounding like they are advertising for the literal "Jesus Christ" of web programming... turning code bugs to agege bread whilst also turning server errors into palm wine.

what software Ides's are used professional...

is there a lot wiziwig software development going on like with Pinegrow editor... is everyone using dreamweaver (omg!).

what are the most popular frameworks and backend languages being used professionally?

And how many agencies or companies care about modern version control work-flows/ software, CI, design patterns and proper project management.

Thank you in advance for replies.
I would be keen to hear from employed people working in the industry as well as freelancers also cool

In Nigeria PHP has been used more for web programming and Angular.js is popular here in Nigeria (At least to top level developers)
Yes, 70% of employers believe in full stack web developers, like myself while the remaining 30% believe in teamwork.

A lot of web designers haven't yet adopted the grid system which is why many Nigerian sites look "Ugly", or they run to WordPress. In fact WordPress developers have made a lot of money from the Nigerian employers.

I currently work at www.rastvorlabs.com

Thank you DanielTheGreek for your reply.
Please forgive me I have a few more questions related to your post.

By full stack developer, does than mean front/ back-end development... or does that mean designer, ux, project manager, webmaster and devops all in one? (Nigerian web software devs interpretation)

By grid system can I assume you mean responsive frameworks likes foundation or bootstrap etc? if so that leads onto another question is sass/less being adopted yet?

Wordpress is still a very popular cms and site development platform. Has other platforms/ frameworks been widely adopted like zend F., laravel, drupal etc.

What applications/ editors do you personally use if i may ask? I'm trying to get a feel for what the professional market looks like.

Your Companies website is refreshing it is actually doing device responsive design the better way... the real responsive way. unlike many Nigerian sites I have come across.

Forgive me, but may I also ask how log you have been developing with php.

Thank you again for you time and response it is very much appreciated.

Thank you cool

*Full stack developers are those that control an entire project on their own, meaning front and back end development. In Nigeria the average developer designs the logo and other web graphics instead of giving the job out to another person.
In my own case, the company I work for is still young so I'm only a full stack developer for the main time till they employ other programmers.

*Yes, I was referring to Zurb Foundation, Bootstrap and Skeleton when i mentioned "The Grid System" earlier.
SASS and LESS! a good number of Nigerian developers haven't even had a good grasp of CSS, not to talk of CSS preprocessors. But the top level developers/designers use it quite often in Nigeria for instance my friend at Tuteria (https://www.tuteria.com) made use of SASS and LESS in making his company's site

*Yes, apart from Wordpress other CMS's have been used like Drupal, Joomla and the rest..
Frameworks like Zend, Laravel and Yii are being used by few Nigerian developers, and i think this is because our Developers have not been exposed to Object Oriented PHP, Node.js e.t.c Maybe organizing Hackathons in Nigeria can solve that problem.

*I use both Sublime Text and Textpad

*Thank you, the website is still under-construction.. i'm using Angular.js for a new version of the website.

*I have been developing with PHP only for a year. (www.rastvorlabs.com isn't even on PHP)

in Nigeria most employers want you to posses all skills known and unknown to man, they don't want specialty but an expert in all fields and still expect many years of experience from the developer. Most job posts you will see on nairaland are from un serious individuals who are not yet ready to run a business and most of the offers are low ball undecided

Some companies I have worked for, here in the UK, have moved away from framework dependency and proprietary software because they can sometimes cause awkward bottlenecks in product enhancement and bug fix strategy.

But I still see a lot of companies advertising for Spring shocked , which seems like a great big organic mess as far as I can see.

I'm not to argue as to which framework is the best.

But I will say not all frameworks are created equal. Things like available skills pool/ technology, budget and feasibility most likely govern what frameworks are used. I would also hope framework choices are not dictated by laziness or wilful ignorance... attitudes like that hold the developer community (in nigeria especially) back, if there is a better available solution then it should be used if possible. If the industry doesn't develop in expertise we all suffer. Other foreign entities will capitalise on present / future opportunities. Nigerian software professionals both home and abroad should aspire towards excellence.

thanks for your feedback losprince,

Sorry may I ask what development/ career experience you have in particular... are you working for a studio/ agency/ freelancing.
And what would you recommend a newbie web dev. in nigeria to focus on in order to avoid working for the type of client / company you refer to above.
The type that require the almighty universal developer and rather get a good position or client.

Thanks again DanielTheGeek,

For your feedback.
And Sublime is an excellent editor and it has many plugins to extend it's functionality. I was using that professionally for a couple of years before I found PHPstorm.... I still use sublime for some hobby projects as well as it just loads up really fast which I think is great.

Dreamweaver would have been okay for Advanced programmers to get quick jobs done, but they removed Server Behaviours in their recent version and believe me...that chased a lot of "lazy" people away!

**I have not heard of Pinegrow Editor. i will definitely check it out but honestly Sublime is my hero cool

**Modern what, majority of the companies here don't care about version control, softwares e.t.c, What they're all looking for is the finished product looking all polished. Our eyes could do with more companies like GoDaddy in Nigeria that stick to design patterns!

@kingMelvin, What kind of programmer are you?
Re: What Is Recommended To Have A Successful Career In Web Development by kingMelvin: 8:37pm On Jan 19, 2016
@DanielTheGeek
I'm back end web developer my language of choice is php. I know and have coded projects in other languages but primarily it's php that I specialise in along with the accompanied frameworks.

I am a senior developer at my current company. I try to maintain and update my skills inline with industry standards.

I do this both as a necessity but also out of respect for my profession, I want to take pride in my work. also they more complex the project the more things that can go wrong... without proper standards in place it will become hell... even worse if you have a team larger than two or three devs... I've worked in different company environments.

I'm still learning like everyone else and value other opinions. I have also found that improving technical skill gives me greater flexibility with jobs/ company roles as well as better footing when it comes to negotiating compensation. ... it's a far cry from my first junior dev role when I took whatever they offered me because I valued the opportunity to learn and the experience I could add to my CV.

I love my career and my craft but I find in more recent years I make sure to separate work and home life... life is too short so it's good to put limits... obviously when I first started out I had a different opinion lol
Re: What Is Recommended To Have A Successful Career In Web Development by Nobody: 9:53pm On Jan 19, 2016
Again i feel another thing affecting our developers here in Nigeria is the ability to source out information and Self-Teach theirselves.

A very good example is this thread, 66 views (really!!).. Out of how many programmers on NL. Young developers should be reading threads like this.
Instead they're looking elsewhere.

I'm freelancing at the moment, i would recommend that newbie developers focus on building a portfolio they can be proud to show off, get a git-hub account and populate it with projects. When they see these companies looking for the omniscient programmer just ignore them hopefully they will get the message that such programmers don't exit, not in this economy.

I think the requirement overload may sometimes be a way of scaring off bluffers. Imagine how many people look at a job spec. and think, "yeah, I could fudge my way through an interview"?

But, if you raise the bluff bar, by doubling the "requirement", only those with at least half the requirement will attempt to bluff. The rest would be scared off. cool

That is not an excuse at all, they should have a whole department responsible for Recruiting..
I believe any company doing what you said really has issues!

I don't know what it is like in Naija, but in UK the employer may not even write the final job specification. It would often be a recruitment company working on behalf of the employer. It is very costly using your most competent staff for recruitment. So, first line of defense against the barrage of job applications is a recruitment company, whose staff are not experts in the field of IT. They use all manner of tactics and prejudices to pare down the applications to something manageable. You just have to understand the pressures and roll with the punches.

The Web Community in Nigeria fairs mostly on PHP. But I have observed that some also work with JAVA like the company I currently Work with and a few others. The story about PHP makes a lot of people join it and the news about JAVA scares people

@KingMelvin @DanielTheGeek Whats the difference between web design & web development ?
The best & most attractive site I've ever come across is lukepeerfly.com. I wish one can make sites like that & how would I know the programming language used in making that site just by merely looking at it

After unfollowing this topic, why are you disturbing me?? lol, Just kidding wink

**Web design is just building the visual interface of a website...It would be bad navigating to a website and all you see are files and folders!!
So web designers use CSS or CSS preprocessors and HTML to build and style a web page!

**Web developers..hmmm, Designers are also developers..
But i guess you mean the Web Programmers..

Web Programmers work on web page interactions, Back end development e,t,c

**Note HTML & CSS aren't Programming languages, so Web Designers aren't programmers

You can't just look at a website and know what they used in building their platform (Maybe if you're a Wizard smiley) because what you see when you're looking at that website is just HTML and CSS. Don't get me wrong: There are tools for PC, MAC, Linux e.t.c, that will help you scan a site and detect the frameworks used..
So what you should be looking for are the tools that'll help you find the Frame work that site is using!
E.g: I heard Jumia was built on Yii or so..I'm not sure

HTML stands for hypertext markup language. Both HTML and CSS are programming languages.

They are what is known as declarative languages.

Design is part of development.

Development refers to the entire process from conception of a website, discovery and documentation, through to packaging and installation. For large developments, specialists take care of their specific area of the workflow. Some such specialisms fall under the rubric of Web Design. These include Interface Design, and technical and non-technical web authoring.

I agree with your point.

but web design / development are used interchangeably even though in my opinion there are very different in nature and tools. In practice they work hand in hand

You're welcome.

But before you take a break from coding, think of why you even started coding...have you achieved your aim? if no, then you don't need that break, you need extra hours of hard work instead to achieve what you set out to do. If it is only HTML and CSS you know, stick to it like that but be on top of the HTML/CSS game, be 90% and above, strive to be Nigeria's best Web Designer..or Africa's finest designer, or the world's best designer, that's a good name and it's better than riches.
Keep your game going, there's no reason to stop, even when you are at the top..you'd need to keep on going. Design 10 websites every 2 weeks, set tasks for yourself and trust me, you'd be one of the all time best web designers on the globe, but remember bro the journey of a thousand miles starts from a step.

Goodluck!
