ENUGU – The Federal Government has given marching orders to Electricity Distribution Companies, DISCOs, in the country to supply pre- paid meters to electric consumers without further delay.

The Minister of Power, Works and Housing, Mr Babatunde Fashola, SAN, made this known at the end of his third monthly meeting with operators in the power sector at the Ugwuaji Transmission Station, Enugu, Monday.

Fashola said that the meeting discussed the issue of availability of gas, volatility of the foreign exchange market, financial capability of discos as well as difficulties in of pricing gas in dollars instead of the local currency among others, adding that discos must meet their responsibilities of meeting the demands of their customers to supply them with pre-paid meters to avoid estimated billings.

Earlier before the meeting, the Minister had asked the DISCOs to always engage their customers by informing them promptly about any power outage and reasons for such problems.

According to Fashola, it was not the business of the government to explain to Nigerians why certain discos were not meeting up with their responsibilities, having sold the various companies to them.

Fashola said like government was playing the same role which the Nigerian Communications Commission, NCC, was playing as regulator for the telecommunications companies adding that each of them must step out to play their roles effectively.

“If you are not getting power from the transmission company, you must tell your customers so. The issue of review of tariff was arrived at after consultations. You (discos) did the consultations. Why don’t you step out and explain the issue to your customers. All of us must explain to our different customers where we operate…,” he said.

The communique issued after the meeting read, “The Honourable Minister of Power, Works and Housing, Babatunde Raji Fashola, SAN, chaired the third monthly meeting of operators in the electricity industry in furtherance of identifying, discussing and finding practical solutions to issues facing the Nigerian electricity supply industry.

Here's hoping this goes beyond talk! A Staff of The Customer Care Unit of the IBEDC a DISCO asks at a meeting why the prepaid metre due in 45 days is still been awaited 4 months after and she gets queried! The generation of the first line managers who ruined phcn with corruption and misappropriation are still embedded in the Discos and need to be rooted out if we must make progress in that sector.

Ordered them with words of mouth? Part of the agreement for the multi year tariff order is that all customers must have been metered by 2014, we're already in 2016, tariff is increasing ceaselessly....meter we haven't seen, the EEDC recently started started a scheme that'd have people advance huge sums for meters, with a shady legal document that absolves them of all responsibilities and liabilities for whatever they're supposedly bringing. I keep praying it doesn't turn out to be a 21st century grand scam, the way things are no one would even question them.

This has been one big missing links. I av tasted the prepaid meter and currently tasting the manipulation of the postpaid meter. They simply look at your size, tribe, house size among other pointer of your financial strength and fix you a high price. From what I understand one has to clear the oustanding outrageous bills to switch over to prepaid meter. What will Fashola do about people in this situation? I hope they don't try something stupid.

Imagine that. They are same people orchestrating the inflation of bills in order to rip the system. What will Fashola do about these guys? One condition to get prepaid meter is to clear outstanding postpaid bills, which has been inflated already. Imagine your meter reading total of 5000kwh when you have paid total of N80,000 plus and they still giving you a bill of N100,000 plus for a four year old house/meter.

Will pre-paid meters guaranteed constant light Work on power generation, prepaid meter can follow later. What's the need of mounting meter when electricity is not guaranteed.

You do know that power generation is in the hands of private companies not the government?

That is the way to go they need ultimatum by which prepaid meters have got to be fitted after which all those without prepaid need not pay.

We need accountability and incentive both from users and suppliers. There is no light generated or distributed and still customers are expected to pay for services not rendered.

We need to call it what it is. The bills are not estimated but arbitrary. It is totally irresponsible for a government to allow a scam of this magnitude. Someone just arbitrarily set a bill and asks customers to pay for it.

Accepted that it has been ongoing for years but if we are serious about a change, there needs to be timeline for implementation.

Let me assure all Nairalanders once again that we don't have any real problems in this country other than that which people are sabotaging the solution to. It is people who are responsible for making light available and properly billed. The number of people who have a stake in the continued backwardness of Nigeria are too many in number and too high up in positions where they can carry out such evil. Cry, my beloved country; Nigeria is a joke!

PS: pls note that I am an engineer and have a particular interest and knowledge about power and electricity issues

I belief that if everybody has prepaid meter, light will be stable because the more you use light, the more you will buy prepaid metre card.

It is another super story. These DISCOs are monopolys. We are stuck to one DISCO per consumer. We have no choice than to take whatever they do. Where is the incentive to provide meters. This was not privatization. it was sharing og government loot. We should have CHOICES. The privatisation of power should have been similar to the telecoms. Let new players come in with their investments and figure how to provide service. Then they compete with PHCN. The meters should be interoperable and switching between DISCOs would just be like the swap of s sim card (probably buying card from another DISCO). That way, meters would be available in the open market.

Before someone says it is impossible, that is how it works in sane climes. All this begging for meter will stop because your customer is not guaranteed for life. infact, different DISCOs would be advertising and marketing you for patronage. Have you ever seen a DISCO advertise?

Sadly, i believe Fashola and co know this but are using us to act super story. To say i am dissapointed is an understatement. if they don't know this is the issue then i am scared for the future of this our country.

Better... Where I stay in Aks, each compound pays N1500 pay month.
If they disconnect u for a month and u don't have moni to pay then, whenever u are ready to start paying ur bill, u must pay for d month u were disconnected first before u will be connected.
That means wether u like it or not. You mudt pay N1500 x 12 in a year..
