You've got a point there. But the student-loan industry will oppose such a move ferociously. Already, Americans over over $1 trillion in student loans (both from banks and the federal government). Any proposal that seeks to reduce the amount of time it takes to earn a degree would be krptonite to the loan processing companies and the government.

As it is in the medical field, so it is in the Legal field. Students in the US and Canada, who wish to study law, have to attend an undegrad school for 4/5 years before enrolling in a 3-4 year law program.

You mean 11 years even before doing residency which may be another 5+ years? This is poorly thought-out stand which will as a matter of fact will not be allowed to come into being by appropriate bodies of doctors.

This is absolutely unnecessary!

The problem with the Nigerian health sector is not about how long a doctor spends in the medical school but about greediness on the part of the doctors and generally lack of political will by the government to revamp our healthcare system.

9 years med school I.e 4 years basic med science and 5 years medicine is very sufficient to train a doctor of medicine.

However, to improve our healthcare system, other professionals should be allowed to thrive and grow in the health sector. The doctors should concern themselves with how to become experts in the various specialties of surgery and medicine and not want to become pharmacists, lab scientists and nurses at the same time.

Provision of medical care encompasses all medical professionals. That is how it is done in the developed countries where you all run to to get quality health care. Do same here in Nigeria instead of this unnecessary 11 years training for MBBS- MD not even inclusive!

A competitive course that some spend more than 6 year to get while at age 25 and + 11,that's 36 years of age when ur mates are already living large you'll be on the scratch of making a living.

I'm very sure this policy is proposed as it can never come to pass except if other bodies like mdcn, nma agrees. Even though you study medicine for USA or any top European country you won't still be as rich or relevant as those entertainers.. If you wanna study medicine it should be driven by passion not money... Before u start complaining go and check how long medical students spend in school in other countries

here in Asia, those who have bsc paramedic/biological science spend just 3 years, +1 year clerkship to become Dr,@ 11 years +, (+= unforeseen ASUU strike, which could be 0 to infinity) it's not all about the length of time, its all about the system, transparency, etc. spending 50 years in a Med school ,where your selection was not based on merit, but based on children of influential personalities, where you use the same antiquated equipment's as your lecturers during their undergrad days, (that is when PHCN epileptic power supply agrees), where parents generosity and public relations determines their wards passing grades, where every thing is done the other way round ...will not help matters. feel free to send me a PM if u wish to run away from Nigeria fr your studies. grin

i even called someone in mdcn council and she said it can never be effected that it was just a suggestion that can't be passed into law.
