He said the privatisation of the sector had yet to show any improvement in the quality of service, saying it was difficult to determine whether it was done in public interest or with profit motive.

Obasanjo endorses APC moves, as party leadership visit Abeokuta
22.Dec 2013

The push by the opposition, All Progressives Congress, APC to dislodge the ruling Peoples Democratic Party, PDP received a boost yesterday as former President Olusegun Obasanjo openly threw his weight behind the APC’s current initiatives.
The APC leadership, comprising some national leaders and governors visited him Obasanjo in Abeokuta, the Ogun State capital on Saturday to solicit the former president’s support for the party in the forthcoming elections.
The party leaders, which started converging on Obasanjo’s Hilltop Mansion around 5:22pm, included former governor of Lagos State, Asiwaju Bola Tinubu, the party’s Interim National Chairman, Bisi Akande; former Head of State, General Muhammadu Buhari; former speaker of the House of Representatives, Aminu Masari; former Borno State governor, Senator Ali Modu-Sheriff; Senator Osita Isunazor; Senator Bukola Saraki and Lai Mohammed.
Governor Murtala Nyako of Adamawa State came to the former president’s house in company with the former Chairman of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commissioin, Mallam Nuhu Ribadu; the former minister of aviation, Femi Fani-Kayode and others in a convoy of three black jeeps.
Other APC governors at the meeting included Rochas Okorocha (Imo), Ibikunle Amosun (Ogun), Abdulfattah Ahmed (Kwara), Rotimi Amaechi (Rivers), Rabiu Kwankwaso (Kano) and Senator Abiola Ajimobi (Oyo).
The Chairman of the New PDP, Kawu Baraje led some of his members and the former Kaduna State Chairman, Yero Makama, to the meeting.
Presenting the party chieftains and the APC governors to Obasanjo during the opening of the meeting, Akande said the party was in support of the former president’s 18-page letter to President Goodluck Jonathan.
The APC National Leader, Tinubu who alluded to Obasanjo’s contribution to the building of the Nigerian nation, lamented that the country was divided more than ever.
Apparently referring to Obasanjo’s recent letter to Jonathan, he enjoined the former president not to shy away from speaking the truth.
Tinubu added that the APC had resolved to rescue Nigeria, appealing to Obasanjo to lead the mission.
“You’ve come out of tribulation and held the highest position in this country. We are here because of your courage. Nobody can say he has information more than you. You have surmounted a number of crises. Nigeria is divided more than before; to realise stable Nigeria, we want to encourage you to continue to speak the truth. We’re resolved and determined to rescue Nigeria. We want you as navigator,” he said.

I think the owners of NL should consider closing the comment section of the forum because people have turned it to a platform for silly and unguarded comments. Its true that we must air our views on topical issues, but the abuse of freedom of speech has become so proliferated such that some people only subscribe to the platform only to abuse and rain insults on people who hold contrary opinions from theirs. If it's not APC vs PDP, it'll be Buhari vs Jonathan, Wike vs Amechi, Lai Mohammed vs Information etc. It's annoying how almost every Tom, Dick and Harry have turned this forum to a beehive of abuse and insults. It's true that sometimes we disagree to agree but that must be done with some sense of decorum.

Most of those who bought those power companies have no clue . They do not have investible capital ,no technical know-how and no history in the power industry . If they were viable , the commissioning of power plants and other installations will be in the news everyday .
Remember when GSM licenses were granted ?
GSM were building something everyday of the week.
It is simply the usual sharing of government property. create dummy firm to extract rents from the government and the people .
Comparing power with Telecomms is the height of ignorance.

Do you think the Nigerian Government can afford to give Nigerians 24 hours power supply? ****

-Lord
To answer your question....no.

I opposed GEJ....but privatizing power was one of his better ideas.

For a start....the transmission system is in a complete mess. Fixing it is going to take trillions of naira.

Buhari is just getting to know that power situation isn't a joke. Very laughable.

I don't understand why Nigeria has been inflicted with diseased leaders like Buhari; a brain dead Quota system retired Army Major General/ a coup plotter who was tolerated by Obasanjo as a petroleum minister despite his incompetence.

He will surely deny ever making any pledge to add 2000 MW to the national grid by year end as always.

So the mronic junketeer now hopes to increase power from 1500 to 3500MW and later 2000MW, when he met it at 5000MW, so what has changed?
Even to maintain what he met on ground has now become an achievement.

Useless brainless demonic president. ‎
It's quite amazing how a person who cant even comprehend elementary English language is calling a president 'brainless.' Wonders shall never end, you need to seek psychological help urgently.

I voted for pmb too for just two reasons, job and to stop the northern insurgency. All the balablablabla corruptions and power sector are not my concerns cos if I av the job and their is peace,am gonna enjoy the little I av
But you know what? He has failed me.
Failed me totally.
Its almost a year now and everything has goes worse am now buying every thing in double of d initial price that's even if I have money to buy them.
Thank God that I listen to gej voice that time to learn a skill and go into agriculture. Now the tailoring work and my fish pond is fetching me little money though the demand as fall since the money flowing in the state has reduced.
Seriously APC = SCAM
For some gej failed them while for some he was their hero, for some like u pmb has failed them while for some they see a leader who have guts and balls.

I think that makes it balance depending on which perspective.

In other words, your Government embarked on a project which you did not do any extensive research on. Is it not wrong for Government to gamble with people's future. How about finding out how other countries do it, finding possible difficulties that may arise and how to overcome them?. No tangible road map and plan B In case things go otherwise? And someone calls himself the minister of power? collecting salaries and allowances every month??

2.Over the years....most Nigerians and government and private organisations....did not pay their light bills.Infact...the situation still persists.

3.The last time we invested in transmission infrastructure was in the 1970's. Now...it is so bad that we cannot even transmit all the power we generate.

4.In 1997....someone came up with a figure of N5trillion to put NEPA back on its feet.Ya think govt has N5 trillion just for light?

5.Generation is no better Right now...we have just 5000mw maximum. We need it to be at least 12000MW to have light 24/7....Provided there are no new connections to the national grid.

6.Speaking of the national grid....since the 1980's...governments have been connecting people to the grid in the name of political patronage...sans planning. Of course..the grid is overloaded.

It is now imminent that indeed, HATERS GONNA HATE.
Buhari drink water, people get head ache
Buhari stand up, people get headache
Buhari do this, they complain
Buhari doesn't do this, they complain. Na WA o.

To all those calling President Buhari a dullard, Welldone o. I don see una, with all your intelligence, who you he[l]p?
If you were as intelligent as you want us to believe, you would have seen this as an OPPORTUNITY to showcase your talents.

Headline reads that the President is "in a dilemma". Instead of getting the message, you begin to insult.
Intelligent people gather up like minds, discuss on roundtables, get possible working solutions, begin to send news across to the Presidency that you are a small group of intelligent minds with workable solutions to xyz problems... Make yourself heard; use social media. Tweet and Retweet until you are called to rub minds. You'll be paid for your intelligence.

Not just hiding behind the anonymity of your Nairaland handle and reigning insults on your president like if you were in his shoes, you'll solve America's problems. If you must criticise, criticise constructively. Lastly, for all its worth, our hatred for Buhari won't make him poorer than the richest middle class man, just like our hatred for GEJ never made him poorer than the poorest Governor. It just doesn't change NOTHING.

CHEERS.

"The president said his administration must do everything necessary to increase power generation and distribution from its present status of about 1,500 to 3,500 megawatts with additional 2000 before the end of the year as a way of halting the ripple effect effects on the economy."

That economy was destroyed over 16 years partly because of the addiction of Obasanjo and Jonathan to blind privatization, right? What people want is for Buhari to be philosophically consistent. For instance, you can`t give the Power portfolio to Fashola only to say later that you are not sure of privatization, who is he deceiving?

Goke7:
One of the reason I voted for PMB is to reverse the privatization of phcn which was a scam, this is where I will begin to oppose PMB if the damn privatization thing lingers throughout his tenure. The privatization of Phcn was used by the pdp to share to their cronies just like dasukigate. Nonsense.
Reversing it may not be easy

1.The companies will take the Govt to court to reclaim moneys invested in the business...which have now been lost thanks to the reversal. And the courts will award heavy damages. After all....govt signed a contract...and if you break contracts, judges will tend to throw the book at you.

(Democracy, isn't it grand smiley)

2.At the moment...the amount of cash needed to fix power in Nigeria is enormous. We need investments of $1billion at least annually just to fix things.Government....does not have the cash....even if you deal with corruption...you still have low oil prices (Which Nigeria needs at $123 per barrel just to balance the books.).

How many full time no nonsense army generals have tried to fix the power sector without success?. My hope was OBJ but he failed woefully despite sacrificing his power minister. PMB is the 2nd military to civillian president,I wish you luck but please give maximum security protection to your power minister because you will soon find out the powers behind 'There Must Not Be Light In Nigeria' are more than those in the oil and gas sector.
Re: Buhari: I'm In Dilemma Over Power Privatisation by marabout(m):
Wait o.

Does this General not know that private companies have their pockets to fill and public interest has no relevance whatsoever? grin shocked

To make that massive profit, they have to run the business and innovate far better than lazy civil servants running govt owned companies like NEPA was, NIPOST or NPA.

Through much improved service delivery & quality, consumers will consume much more, and the private company rakes in huge profits.

At best, the govt can try to reduce ripping off the citizens by private sector by setting consumer protection rules. Fair but not crippling or overly intrusive/anti-business. grin

This is what he said...
https://www.nairaland.com/3002768/buhari-im-dilemma-over-power#43974680

He also disclosed that his administration had, in its remaining three, given itself the target of 10,000 megawatts "distributable power", adding that in 2016 alone, the government intended to add 2,000 megawatts to the national grid.

Lying is not good.

Ministry of Power meanwhile...puts power generated now...at...3981 on 13/3/16...with a peak of 5021 on 2/2/16.
