jauntty:March 22 was the qualification date for Afriprud.,the buyer of the shares on qualification date gets the dividend since the person is holding till the end of trading that day(qualification date). 1 Like |

jauntty:The seller would get the dividend since the shares was sold to the buyer on closure of register day or date(because the seller held the shares throughout the qualification date, that is,March 22 for Afriprud). |

All this discussion on when to sell and still get dividend is up in the air in my view. The system has so many loop holes and inefficiencies to be precise. I heard of cases where people get dividend years after they sold. On the other hand you can qualify for dividend and still not get the money without some hassle depending on how registrars go about verifying your holdings. Of course things have improved with better data handling and e-dividend. For me I normally decide if I am going for dividend. Then I buy early and hold until payment day. I also try to perfect my e-dividend mandate early, and reconfirm with registrar every year. There are stocks that I don't buy for dividend if I had difficulties with the registrars. If I think that I can get dividend and capital appreciation from a stock I will hold after payment date and wait for a rebound after mark down. This is what works for me. I don't try to work the thin line between closure and qualification dates to hit both div and cap appr. 4 Likes |

Case study: Closure date : 26 - 30 September 2015. If you're still holding as at 10:15am on the 26th of September, you qualify for dividends. This is clear enough. Now the dividend questions can stop! 2 Likes |

Why is the closure date 26-30/3,suppose you sell before or on 30/3,would still get the dividend? |
Re: Nigerian Stock Exchange Market Pick Alerts by duni04(m): 11:31am On Mar 26, 2016 |
alexo68:Forget whatever other date is included. The first date i.e 26th is the only date you should be concerned about. If you sell before 26th, you do not qualify for dividends. If you sell on the 26th, you qualify, that is after the price would have been marked down. If you buy after the 10:15 am on the 26th you do not qualify for dividends. 2 Likes |

Raider76:Nice one. But i think regulators should do something about registrars like Cardinal Stone who deliberately will hold your dividend for no reason, especially when one has met with all the requirement for e-dividend payment. These are part of the lapses we have in the economy, not just political office holders. Than God i have learnt my lessons. will never hold the share of any company that is under CARDINAL STONE REGISTRARS. They are fruad! |

@ skyebank and fbn arguments, Only God knows how d MKT will react, but whichever way it chose to react, I will buy fbn if am a long termer with ten years investment plan. Fbn problem was mgt and d mgt team has been removed, so we expect better decisions going forward. I've forgotten d smnites that likes bad news. He said - bad news is good news cos it allows him to cherry pick. In 3 years time, when he tells u he made 300% on a stock, u will be shocked and be ask yourself where you were when the stock was selling that cheap. 2 Likes |

bolabiyi: Not a bad selection. He is definitely looking at the bigger picture. Remember the word on everybody's mouth lately (diversification to agriculture), infrastructure deficit... then you'd see where is coming from. That stock pick is for investors not day traders 1 Like |

megainvest: I am with you on this @megainvest...All the stocks recommended by my stock broker to me have performed woefully except the ones I selected myself. A classic example is UBA which I bought at 3.65 but had to sell at a loss when I got tired of its sloppiness. My advice is people should calibrate their recommendation before making a financial investment decision (FID) |

duni04:My Bro.,to get one's dividends at times is like someone is looking for an oil company job! The CSCS and registrars should work together to make this dividend matter easy(there shouldn't be any need of filling forms,it should be automatic in nature, one's bank details should be sent to registrars through the medium of stockbrokers/CSCS). |

Re: Nigerian Stock Exchange Market Pick Alerts by bigjay01(m): 5:57pm On Mar 26, 2016 |
Coolcash1: So UBA at 3.65 is a bad invesment? O di egwu really! At the right prices, Presco, Okomu oil and JB are good stock to hold. We cannot tar all brokers as bad. Every one and their advice will have to be treated on their own merit. |
