Hello everyone, I just joined nairaland today and find it very interesting. Does anyone know about Lamar university, Texas and university of Texas at Arlington? How would you rate these schools?

What course are you going for at UT Arlington?

Hello @bigfrancis21 @imperiouxx and ALL, i sent a mail to a prof in one of the schools that have accepted me about research opportunities and this is her reply below. She even added me on linkedin a day before she replied.

''Thank you for writing, and congratulations on being accepted to our program. At this point in time I do not have a R.A. assistantship available for a Master's student, but things may change as I submit research proposals. I would be glad to talk with you more about your research interests, but I wanted to be up front with you about the financial situation in case you were considering speaking with someone who does have an open position on their projects. I do not know yet what the TA situation will be for the upcoming fall.
Let me know if you are still interested, and we can set up a time to talk''

Please how do i reply this mail even though i know i cant do any research without funding but i am hoping something will come up on her part.

She has been upfront with you. Just because she doesn't have funding now does not mean you should just ignore her, as she has opened up a possibility for future funding. Set up a time to talk to her with the mutual understanding that if something comes up in the future, she should consider you. Keep on contacting other people too.

Hello guys. Please I may have a little problem with my nysc certificate. I am a corps member presently and would be leaving for graduate studies next fall. If I leave nysc half way or fail to obtain the certificate, what do I do when I return? Can I get an exemption letter or I have to do nysc all over again?

That's so not true. I have 2 admissions for masters in mathematics for fall 2016 semester. I don't think there is any school that forces you to go straight for PhD in mathematics, only that there are some schools that give the option of going for masters ( bs to ms) or going straight for PhD (bs to PhD) It depends on what you choose.yours chances of gaining admission is not a problem so far u have the appropriate GRE scores the school seeks.computer science is very related to mathematics. So don't sweat it.

Thank you. If I may ask is it pure or applied mathematics you are going for?
I am looking for something close to cryptography while studying mathematics.

If you have the skills, why not? You'll need to network well
with people though while in school..very important. There are lot of Indian startups in the Bay area.

I hear there is alot of racism and sexism in silicone valley, so if you are going to put yourself in the middle of that war zone, you better be very good and prepare to prove yourself worthy

Please help. What are the chances of getting US F1 visa for MBA without GRE and Toefl? Got admitted to 3 universities in US. Did Electrical Engineering at Undergraduate level in Nigerian University and MSc in Engineering course too in UK. I have been going to UK and coming back. I have about 6 Years of work experience and i am at mid level of my career. i am also a shareholder in the company. I am a genuine non-immigrant whose intention is for study only.

pls help.

of course, your experience and education speak for you already. MBA class seeks to have students like you to contribute to business cases. Embassy staff are smart and they recognise this contributions. Goodluck. Don't just go tell them you found the school online. Its a put off for someone of your pedigree!

Re: General U.s.a (student) Visa Enquiries-part 8 by Nobody: 3:08am On Mar 29, 2016
Hi everyone. I used to be a member of this thread this time last year. So I'm right here in the U.S. Living the American dream *rolls eyes* I quit my job to study MS in Civil engineering. Trust me school, here is way better than Nigeria. Also way tougher. At least the course I'm doing. Everything is so advanced and computerised. I have a research assistantship that fully funds me. And my people at home still try. So money is not a problem. However, the challenges here are a lot. Weather, different food (I still have running tummy frequently from food here), culture shock, language (Yes language. Nobody seems to hear what you say and you have to repeat yourself over and over again til its gets tiring), Racism ( Yes, I said it!), loneliness and too many other things to mention. I'm still hanging there though.lol. The change was very rapid trust me. If you have not been outside Nigeria before it would be very tough. It even may be tougher if you didnt grow up in an urban area in Nigeria. Sometimes I think it's all just not worth it. I also believe America is not what it used to be. Many people are finding that out very very slowly. Getting a well paying jobs even for the American themselves is challenging. You also give up a lot to be here. You don't see your family for long. And when they dont hear from you, they think you're snubbing them. But it's actually the time difference. Well I wish you all luck. But if you eventually make it through admission and eventually VISA. I have just one statement for you.

PREPARE FOR BATTLE.
After months and months of thinking about it. I would return to Nigeria after my degree. Crazy right? Don't ask me why? But I believe I'm better off in Nigeria thank you. Cheers and goodluck.

Well, you need to confirm what you hear...and using racism as an excuse for failure as an African here?? that is just pure laziness!

So so true.
But I strongly disagree with the last line that most people are better off in Nigeria.
It's all a matter of what your goals and aspirations are. If you feel you're better off career wise in Nigeria, excellent but I think for most, that's not the case.
