Ttalk:do u tink feeding ur fingerings wit vital feed instead of forgien feeds Wld have an effect on their growth, cos forgein feeds were out of reach nd decided 2 settle 4 vita feed.funny enuf their growth was so impressiive |
Re: Hidden Truths About Catfish Business!!! by Ttalk: 2:03pm On Mar 30, 2016 |
joeybillz: Sir, i quite agree with your comment as a statement of fact that vital feed gives impressive growth for growout fish. But i havnt fed smaller size of vital to fingerlings and juvenile. For the business aspect of it i will rather formulate my feed with guarantee crude protein of 58% and minimum of 50% animal protein at N320 to boost the growth of my fish than to use vital feed of almost equal amount. Having said that i think environment determine your feed model and if you want to maximise profit it is better to go local as soon as you fish started picking 3mm 2 Likes |

Re: Hidden Truths About Catfish Business!!! by Ttalk: 10:22am On Mar 31, 2016 |
RPDA: Sir, if you have ordered for your fingerlings i will advice you receive the delivery, feed for 2-3weeks, sort the 2200 that are bigger and invest your balance to feed them to maturity. You should estimate between 220-250 for feeding to average of 1kg if you are using concrete pond. I will advice you construct additional pond for sorting |
Re: Hidden Truths About Catfish Business!!! by Ttalk: 10:25am On Mar 31, 2016 |
vickifeanyi47: You can feed up to 4-5times in concrete pond provided your water management is alright |

RPDA:5000 fingerlings to maturity for 300k, hmmmm, review d number of your stock,Work with nothing more than 1,500, saves you from pressure. Though u cant buy 40k drugs, except you are thinking of fuel for gen with d tormenting prices it is sold around town. If you are a starter think of lesser stock & build on it as your insight grow. if only a pond available, it isn't good enough, extra pond should always be available for many reasons. |
Re: Hidden Truths About Catfish Business!!! by excelsiorfarm(m): 7:56pm On Mar 31, 2016 |
MAAF:For the fingerlings you can stock , let me give you a valid calculation system you can use: length x width x depth x 7.5= u get the gallons of water in your tank/pond, multiply it by 3.79 to get it converted to US GALLONS, then divide by 10 or 12 & u get d you need to raise table size in your pond. Double it if melange, if your water quality or mgt is great, stock 10-15% more ,pls do d calculation, thanks 2 Likes |

Greetings to the house. I hail all of una. I plan to start work small small in the permanent site of my farm, this April. Like I said b4, the land is swampy. It is bordered by a stream that never dries out even in dry season. Water also comes out from beneath the land. Its ten plots of 60*100. Though, not all will be used for fishery. Estates have bought up lands b4 my plot, in fact, the owner of the plot adjacent mine have dug foundation for his fence and entered my land a little( it crossed d beacon a little). Site preparation. The first step should be fencing the land. . However, this will be very expensive bearing in mind that water comes out from the ground. I've talked with someone and he advised I fill d land with laterite ( red sand) and use a heavy equipment to ramp up the soil so that it binds well. That I should also use the sand to move the water back and redirect it. After this, the cost of the fence will reduce . I like this suggestion cos it will make the farm dry and reduce grass re- growth. Now my question is, bearing in mind that the ponds will be earthen pond, do u think it will turn the land to swamp again? Is there possibility of having and earthen pond with the surrounding environment dry land? Please help a sister. I need suggestions @ earthen pond farmers, ab1x, excelsiorfarm, robonski, abuja juve farm, Tokugawa and everybody. So many things on my mind I am also thinking of using the movable equipment to dig the pond (same day), but also considering leaving digging the pond til the land is fenced to avoid eyes of neighbours. |
Re: Hidden Truths About Catfish Business!!! by MAAF: 10:21pm On Mar 31, 2016 |
excelsiorfarm: Thanks, from my calculation with ur formula , after 10% extra I got close to 6000 fingerlings per pond. Does that sound about right to stock in a 14/14/5 ft pond for melange farming. Currently I stock 5000 per pond, so there's still room for more fingerlings to stock my next batch? But with this 5000 fingerlings per pond, I get average weight of 600grams after 3.5 months from fingerling stage. Is that good production? |

MAAF: with my little knowledge i feel 3.5months is too much to and that will eat into your profit. 2.5 to 3months at maximum should be considered melange, remember some people attain table size at 4months |

excelsiorfarm: 1. "length x width x depth x 7.5= you get the gallons of water in your tank pond" My comment: Absolutely correct. L x W X D = cu ft (volume). But this step is where you convert to US gallon. 2. "multiply it by 3.79 to get it converted to US GALLONS" My comment: You combined two steps in step one above. First, you got cu ft (volume) and you converted to US with 7.5 as the multiplyer. In this step, the multiplier 3.79 converts US gallons to liters. So, you get liters as your unit here. 3. "then divide by 10 or 12 & u get d you need to raise table My comment: I am a bit confused here. What's the purpose of the divisor 10 or 12? I can only guess. The divisor might mean for every 10 or 12 liters you stock 1 fish. For Example: 22 ft X 11 ft X 4 ft = 968 cu ft 968 X 7.5 = 7,260 US gallons 7,260 X 3.79 = 27,515.4 liters 27,515.4 รท 10 = 2,751.54; approx. 2,752 Fish Hmmmmmm! Lets check your approach. Let's calculate the density in cubic meter 968 cu ft = 27.4 cu m Meaning you have 2,752 Fish in 27.4 cu m So, we get 100.42 fish/cu m Note: I haven't added your 10 to 15% addition. If I do, it's going to be 110 fish/cu m for 10% and 115 fish/cu m for 15%. This is for table size. So, you multiple by 2 for melange. Question: Do you really think you can have 100 - 115 fish/cubic meter for your pond to raise table size? This is rather high BUT possible. If you actually change water every 3 days like most farmers, you gat my respect. May be you want to tell us more about the right water management for your density. Is it Stagnant? Flowthrough, if yes, what frequency? Sure, I know it's not recirculatory cos the person who asked the question didn't mention using it. I look forward to your answer and explicit explanation sir. Thanks! 3 Likes |

hello house, please where can i get PH meter, i reside in lagos. |
Re: Hidden Truths About Catfish Business!!! by MAAF: 10:42am On Apr 01, 2016 |
dondo83: Thanks. As in melange farming u sell per weight usually the buyers buy at 40kg measurements, at 3 months from fingerling stage, how sure are we that they will attain enough weight. Because it now means we ll weigh out more fish to attain their selling quantity. But if it is 3 months from juvenile stage then that's ok. |

genaro2000: You can order the aliexpress, cheaper than what you get in lagos if you don't mind the waiting period, you can save between 5-10k which I feel is worth the wait. In Lagos you can get from poultry support at abattoir or kingdom aquarium 1 Like |

@Godisgood08, provided you do real fishfarming, with 10-12Litres that's enough room for stocking a fish, nothing high, i need not go through your calculation, neither did i mention any pond type, what i wrote is conclusive except u are beating that figure,so nothing high, talking practical e.g 1000 litres will do 83-100 fishes, if you are good & you have d water,d extra %,thanks 1 Like |

MAAF:first 3.5 months is much for melange, some good stock even get to table size in that time. Many things determine growth- space, feeding quality, water mgt, your fingerlings/juveniles quality and health of your fishes etc, without mincing words there's room, but first determine which of the mentioned paramaters i wrote is affecting their productivity i.e why d delay to get to 600g, maybe your water mgt |
