Hello good NLanders,

I have BSc in Chemistry ( 2nd class division) and I have Msc in Materials Science with a very good grade as well. I have some working experience before I went for my Master's degree. I tried to go to Canada to study but I was denied the Visa 2 times last year after I gave all that I had. So, I am planning to do my PhD in Chemistry (may be related to Materials or Inorganic Chemistry) in US of A.

What I need from you good people is advice on:
i) Can I get some schools that will only ask for subject test result in Chemistry without the General test?
ii) How long is it going to take me if I am studying part-time for the GRE including IELTS/TOEFL ( The better the result the higher the chance to get good funding)?
iii) Due to my experience with Canadian immigration, I am planning to get married very soon, I need advice if that can be some kind of issues when applying for Student VISA. Is it better to get married before moving to US or I should go there alone and later come back to Naija to get married?
iv) Also, I will appreciate if recommendation can be made to me regarding some states to search for schools.

Any tips, advice and suggestions are all welcome.

Thank you all!

Frank
To answer your questions
1) The subject test compliments the general test. Its advisable to take the general test. Most schools don't need the subject test for chemistry.
2) I can't say but 3 months of intensive prep should do.
3. left for the gurus
4. There are lot of schls out there. If you can tell us your cgpa, I can suggest schls with funding. And probably your research experience cos that's the key

You are willing to pay thousands of dollars in fees but you cannot pay $205 to write GRE abi? Try write the GRE, It helps when you visit the embassy and with funding too...... just write the exam joor

2. I got an Offer to Study Nursing at the UCO last week of March, I am currently waiting for my I-20.

3. I am 32yrs Old, I own a Health/Supply Company where we are into supply and transport of first Aid Materials and Healthcare Items like wheelchairs and other support products for disable people. I have an OND in Science Lab Tech and IELTS 6.0.

Pls I need your contribution and candid advice.

Does anyone have an idea of how much renting a student apartment in Texas would cost on the average. For 1 bedroom? 2 bedroom? And 3 bedroom. Is anyone currently staying in an apartment in Texas or knows someone in one. Plus is it compulsory I have a social security number before I can get an apartment as an international student.

My CGPA are: Bsc 3.74/5.00 and Msc 4.01/5.00.
I have research experience for almost 4 years in total as a chemist in a Chemical laboratory and co authoured 2 scientific papers and one peer-review paper during my master's degree program.

You are jumping the gun here, worry less about SSN and accommodation for now and focus on your interview at the embassy... It is not by any means guaranteed but as God liveth and his spirit is alive you SHALL get it.

I think you have a pretty good chance of securing admission into a doctorate program with full funding. ( From my findings, almost all doctorate programs in chemistry give full funding).
For example, I know Louisiana state university is looking to increase the number of african american students in their chemistry program. You could apply for spring 2017.
University of chicago
Georgia state university
University of Texas, Austin
University of Rhode Island
Purdue University
University of North Carolina
University of Houston, Texas
Washington State University
Oregon state university
University of Kentucky
Rice university
University of montana
University of Virginia
And many more I think. They all give graduate assistantships to full time doctorate students.
You just have to do great in your standardized exams.

I hope this helps. Goodluck

Bro I've replied your pm.
But for the sake of those coming later. Lemme post this here.
Funding is limited for spring so I'd advice you to
go for fall 2017.
Some schools don't even admit during spring.
Check out Colorado State University fort Collins
( their app is free)
Georgia State university at Atlanta.
Mississippi State University
Louisiana State University
University of Texas at Austin.
University of Utah
Utah State University
Michigan State University at East Lasing.
University of Tennessee Knoxville
University of South Carolina

All these schools are well funded.

And the acceptance rate is above average..

You'd have to be specific about where exactly you're going to in Texas. You don't need SSN to get an apartment as a student.

Yes, your visa will carry the name of the school you interviewed with and you can change school at anytime once you get to US. Best of luck!

All as Holudarey01 advised. You don't have to claim married to get US visa. Don't forget that your single status can make your green card process hitch free when you decided to remain a permanent resident of US.

Also, all states are good for chemistry but be aware that in US, chemistry is a mother name for many fields related to chemistry. What I'm saying is that don't end up in a school that offers chemistry - physical chemistry whereas you like to study chemistry - medicinal chemistry.

I studied chemistry - biochemistry

Of course! Why do we spend our hard times here trying to give back. We want everyone, everybody to experience US because we know dreams can be built and achieve here but not a distorted and exaggerated view of lives here.

Greetings to everyone in the house, wishing us all good luck galore in our applications.

I got denied the second time for Canada visa about two weeks ago and now I want to try and register to a university in USA but from the requirement, I could see something like i-20 in which they require my sponsor's statement of account in order to weigh his financial capacity, what I really don't understand d is that, am I to send my transcript together with sponsor's SOA or that step is taken after acceptance?

Depends on the school.
Most schools would ask you to send your SOA after admission before you can get your i-20.
So ask your grad coordinator
