Those who transports themselves from Ikorodu, ketu and co. To Lagos Island, to and fro everyday will tell you why it's not a waste of money. cheesy

If they encourage safe water transportation, I assure you you won't need this new bridge. If even 20% of Lagosians use waterways, traffic will reduce.

4th mainland bridge is a shortsighted waste of money as a result of lack of planning.

Why do we need another bridge to a tiny island, that will be under water, in less than 100 years.
Like the badly concieved mega city thingie, which has resulted in the spread of an urban ghetto sprawl, this money would have been better spent on reclaiming what has been lost.
Instead of a single business district , would it not have been better to have a series of business districts like the central business district.
Like one business district in Ketu, Surulere, Agege and Ojo respectively thereby reducing the need for a new bridge all the time.
That money would also be better spent building a subway system or urban railways system.

You raised some interesting points and most of these folks are terrible administrator. I think they care more about legacy gigantic projects than actually fixing any problem and Lagos has to be the most disorganised big city in the world and it also lacks a true identity.

They have a rail project they're yet to complete and rather than start a next enormous project, without proper brainstorming on how to fix a lot of problems in the state - why not complete that one? These folks just copy projects from everywhere and paste everything on Lagos. Oh, we need a seaport - bam, dump it on Lagos. Oh, Dangote wants a refinery - boom, dump it on Lagos. They just keep dumping everything everywhere lol.

Also, can't they build one tunnel, instead of bridges everywhere?

That's why there's a tram system incorporated in that bridge.

(It's a two-tier bridge, incorporating a roadway on the upper level and tramway, shops, pedestrian walkway, etc on the lower level).

Bros do you think this bridge is achievable in today's Nigeria?

I don't.

Another money making venture for Lagos State (Toll gate fee). By the time all of these project are completed, 90% of your net salary after tax would be used to pay toll gates in Lagos State.

Although i presume u mean well for the development of oduastates as your moniker suggests but you're totally unaware or ignoring (whichever it is) some very important facts in your assertions.

First- Building a 4th mainland bridge is not a wasteful shortsighted approach rather it's the opposite.
Although i do agree that decongesting traffic in the metropolis is not a single solution problem as other cushioning measures are needed (e.g efficient public transport amidst other things) but the 4th mainland bridge is definitely a right step in the right direction.

If u think lagos is gonna be submerged in less than a 100 yrs, don't u think it's gon be more catastrophe if there's a subway involved considering in Nigeria where there's barely a functional emergency service.

This is very opinionated and i do not see it in the same light but without concrete facts yet, I'll let this slide.

This is neither a single solution problem but you did raise very interesting and important solutions which can seriously be considered. Kudos

Lastly - Constructing a subway if you know the intricacies involved would consume 5 or more times the amout of building that bridge so it's is definitely not a cost cutting measure esp in a previously unplanned and presently overpopulated place like lagos.

Sir, with all due respect I think this 4th mainland bridge as being proposed is a far bigger and complicated project than the lekki-ikoyi bridge.

If this issue is debated Time and time again, 4th mainland bridge is an urgent project which needs to swerve traffic from Island to Ketu/Ikeja/mainland axis.

People saying that is a waste project don't know what we lagosian go through at 3rd mainland bridge; morning and evening. We need to remind ourselves that the rail project is ongoing from CMS to OJO LGA which will reduce traffic in this axis. Also more plans are being laid to construct more overheads and expand existing roads on the mainland.

With all these transportation network, traffic will drastically reduce in lagos.
I will never judge Lagos with the same yardstick as other states.
I expect better.
Tell me where you do not have traffic in lagos?

Complete the metro, expand it, build conventional overground rail lines, build bicycle lanes. The same Ketu to Obalende will take you 20 minutes on a bicycle.
Problem solved and you so not need to build a bridge every 20 years

I get your point about utilizing a multi-modal system of transportation. The 4th mainland bridge won't be solely funded by the state govt; the contractor will also chip in some money.
Moreover, the light-rail lines are also going to help with decongesting Lagos roads.

oduastates especially and headboiy have a good points. While I appreciate the 4th mainland bridge, I think there is also need to try another means of transportation like the light rail. At the end of the day, or let me say in 20,30 years time, we will all see the need to have multiple modes of transportation in a city like Lagos. If the government is serious about free movement of people in the state, it should as well invest heavily in other modes of of transportation else we will continue to have the need to construct bridges.

This particular one is a waste and absolutely unnecessary. That state is already choked with vehicular traffic. Lagos needs to cater less for cars but more for trains, underground and bicycles.
Even the British knew this and made sure that you pay through your nose if you drove to the island ( there were parking meters everywhere, every 30 minutes, you had to feed the meter).
They have a metro already. Complete it,ring the street with overground railway, raise revenues with heavy congestion charges and biannual driving licenses, create bicycle lanes. This is what cities elsewhere are doing.
Not continue to waste money on ever expanding cities.
To even think about the amount of petrol being consumed in the state ( stuffs they should be exporting).
Let me guess, Once they quickly get all those vehicles into the island, they will have to waste more money expanding roads on the island.

It gladens my heart when I see superior and reasonable proposition to arguements. If only Nigerians can learn to see beyond "give us this day our daily bread" and make for tomorrow's comfort by giving up the pleasures of today...

I once supported this project but after studying the direction cities around the world are going, I changed my mind.
Imagine what cities like London and New York would look like if they had been catering for cars going into Manhattan or Central London.
In actual fact, you hardly see residents default to driving because the governments actively discourage it, thereby proactively reducing the need to continously expand infrastructure and diverting such to education wealth and other social services.

Guy you are on point, I have bring reading you comments on expanding rather than putting pressure on one lga.
Points to support the bigger picture that those that plan the bridge didn't ser.

1. They are not looking to expand other areas of Lagos, which would have made Lagos an all round business hub

2. Developing all other areas of Lagos would reduce pressure on a particular road which increases lifespan of the road and reduce costs of maintenance.

3. it will make oth areas of Lagos to be properly planned with good road network

4. People wi n longer wish to migration back to their states or other states since everywhere of Lagos is a business hub with easy movement and less traffic in the future.
*i see other states in t future creating conducive environment for investors in their state their providing jobs. People moving back to their states / other states since you can still get good job with no traffic or less-traffic and stress, low accommodation cost etc.

Imagine no people/industries are moving to Ogun gradually...

There is a paradigm that your plan would need to change.

Companies decentralising their headquarter ops in Lagos island, VI and Ikoyi and creating non punitive career paths for those working outside of the corporate centres of power.

The adoption of this and a remote office ethic would significantly and immediately address the travel time/ congestion on the Island. Unfortunately many corporates still operate an industrial revolution " clock on system" to measure productivity and involvement.

So unfortunately this expensive solution would appear to be " necessary"
