Please oga se.un help me push to the front thread cos I need to reply this mail today.

I have a B.Sc Industrial Chemistry ( 4.01/5), Pgd Chemical Engineering ( Distinction ).

I applied for a Canadian admission for MSc.E Chemical Engineering. Normally for your admission to be successful you need to secure a supervisor whose research interest is similar to yours. I have done that and he encouraged me to apply. I submitted my application and after going through my application with other supporting documents like letter of motivation and others, he sent me a mail this afternoon that they want to consider me PhD instead of MSc I applied for. I'm very confused right now if to accept it or not considering high standard of education abroad as I use to hear, I haven't experienced foreign education before, this is my first. Please note my ultimate goal is to obtain a PhD. Please help me push to the front thread cos I need advice from experienced Nigerians who have studied abroad. Thanks. I appreciate

This dude sounds really DULL! I mean i'm not trying to insult you, but your dullness is annoying....you might be good academically but it seems you lack common sense! Or at best maybe you know what your decision should be and just want to show off?

Read Up about Wole Soyinka or any Early Graduate of an Old University in Nigeria < most of the First Graduates of Nigerian Universities didn't do an Msc before their Phd....yes it was decades ago , but it has happened before and will still always happen once you prove your worth abroad. His Phd will be longer than the usual one because he will do a few Msc courses - just to prove his worth.
Re: I Applied For MSc But Foreign Supervisor Said School Is Accepting Me For PhD by EDIPO(m): 1:46am On May 05, 2016
This is a usual thing and I've seen it happen to a couple of my friends who finished from the department of Chemical Engineering, Obafemi Awolowo University.

When your results are considered good enough, you're allowed to skip MSc and proceed with PhD.
Some arrangements also have the MSc and Ph.D. fused into one.

It's nothing to worry about and from your results, it appears your neck deep into academics so I think what may look like a challenge would turn out a an interesting pursuit for you.

You may want to quickly discuss with your lecturers here in Nigeria what the expectations for PhD students are.

I can also tell you for free that everything you need to know will be in black and white. Most schools in the USA and Canada are very detailed in areas of expectations and requirements.

May God be with you as you take steps into the future.

Regards.

Whilst studying your PhD you could also enroll in master program on a part time basis.

Canada is beautiful but cold as Bleep..get ready for -30 in winter bro. Good luck

Is this meant to be a joke? He could combine 2 graduate programs?

Take up the challenge since your ultimate goal is a PhD. Just know no one is promising you it is going to be a bed of roses however, with your motivation from within, you can do it. Come make yourself proud.

My one cent.
I'm currently in Alberta and my wife is a PHD student at one of the Unis.
Being accepted as a PHD candidate in Canada doesn't mean you are skipping MSC.
MSC students usually do about 5 to 9 taught courses after which they commence their research (6months research and 3 to 4 months report), while as a PHD student, you MUST still do the same courses within one or two years and then do your research for 2 to 3 years, and then write your report in 4-6 months. The only difference between MSC and PHD is the duration of your research( usually a difference of 2-3 years research). Remember you have to pass your candidacy exam immediately after your taught program(you are strongly advised to complete it in 1 year) before you are considered a PHD student. Your admission letter will have that conditional admission clause. If you don't pass your taught programs and then your candidacy, you will not be allowed to continue with your PHD.
Go and read up your Calculus, Advanced Thermodynamics, Heat transfer and Fluid Mechanics.

Best of luck anyways. There are dozens of opportunities in Canada.

bayooooooo:

1. It is NOT about your qualifications; it is about his INTERESTS. Since he will pay for part of your education(maintaining you as RA) from his research grants, he is looking for something in return. As a PhD student, you are MORE likely to get him papers than a masters student. Besides, if you do well, you will also write a thesis which counts for something. So primarily, it is more about his interests than your qualifications. My take is if you decline the offer for PhD, he would likely drop your file. Nothing to gain, since after two years of masters, you will be gone.

2. A degree in Industrial Chemistry is sufficient to embark on PhD in Chemical Engineering especially if you have taken courses that major on different Unit Operations. So your PDG is a further confirmation that your background is sufficient. The nature of PhD is such that you don't know what your research would lead to and the knowledge require to complete it might even be far from what you have learnt. You might design something that requires a physicist to examine, a microbiologist to experiment with or a computational chemist to validate. A high quality PhD work often involves elements of collaboration and that's why many published works include as many as seven authors. So, don't be afraid of what lies in the program.

3.Generally in your first year, you will take classes that are relevant to your areas of interest. Often, you take these classes in consultation with your advisor. So, you will be fine.

4.You need to do your homework before leaving Nigeria for Canada. Examine his group. How many people are currently in his group? When folks graduate, where do most of the people in his group usually go? Where do people in his group usually get published? What is the average number of years it takes to get PhD in his group? If he is an emeritus professor as you have mentioned in one of your posts, you want to know if a Post Doc is running his group, if he still comes to school regularly? Those are the questions you need to examine carefully.

5.International students are often carried away by big names. You can't blame them. But the best folks to work with are the ASSISTANT PROFESSORS. They are working assiduously to get tenured and as such are more inclined to publish any of your works. Therefore, you tend to have more publications with Assistant Professors fighting to get tenure. In addition, you see them in lab, offices everyday including weekends. So, you tend to learn more on how to troubleshoot equipment, design, or even synthesize clusters in some cases. But they can be micromanaging too much. However, if you work with a well known professor, there is no motivation to publish your works except it will get into a top quality journal and some of them are sitting on many papers written by students who graduated almost a DECADE ago! So you want to weigh that carefully.

6. PhD in the west especially in engineering and sciences is not a joke. It is rigorous and there will be moments that you would be down, moment that would absolutely love it. Make friends, attend conferences and enjoy!

My question for you is why Canada? Is the school well ranked in Chemical Engineering?

Nice exhaustive post.
Where would you rather he went if not Canada?

I'm also considering a PhD when I'm done with my MSc in either Canada or the US, but I really do want to work first, and get some experience, as I would want to find a particular field which really interests me in industry and become a specialist in it, say like Industrial PhD. I'm not one who really likes lab stuff although I like research, albeit these days, I've been very lazy doing things not inside my study curriculum. Then there's still the big question of "after a PhD, what next?" Is it easy to secure a Post Doc after? Cos I know chances of finding a job would be slimmer cos one has narrowed his ability or suitability to be considered by diverse industries in a particular field, say Chemical Engineering for example.

I would advise that you take the M.Sc programme to start.
If in the course of the study you find things easy and a bit too "elementary" and very familiar, you can apply for the Ph.D.

As you said, you don't know what lies ahead and the rigour to which you will be exposed.

It all depends on your aspiration in life. If you want to work in the industry, then the MSc may suit you more. However, if you want to be a subject matter expert, then the PhD is better. Takes longer, requires more dedication, patience and focus but you will get paid. You will also teach during your PhD. I would go for the PhD anyway. That gives you 4 years visa in Canada after which you are very close to obtaining their citizenship status.

No para my guy... Buckle your shoes up, you will be fine..

M.sc and PhD are similar only few extra classes and a little indept research than M.Sc.

Also check with the school they might give you full scholarship and a monthly stipend if you become a teaching assistant..

Note: if you accept a teaching assistant job, dont try to form phonetics grin they wont understand you... Just speak your normal 9ja tongue but louder..

Goodluck ma guy cool you will enjoy it... So no para, no one will ask you to buy this buy that for practical.. Just show up for your classes and do your research diligently.. Your professors plus post - docs are there to help..

Cheers!

Are you sure you are as good as you claim academically.
Most likely, they are not letting you skip MSc. You will do all the MSc courses before you get your PhD.

Let me also point out to you that this decision is not just about your academic quality. Rather, having expressed interest in a supervisors research who found you suitable, he must consider the amount of research efforts you need to put in to get the result he is looking for, based on that decides you better stick for a PhD.

Secondly, the research area might not be one with many willing students, so he does not want you to go just after equipping you with the relevant skills. So a PhD will ensure you stick around long enough to be useful. The way I see it, you might even get offered a lecturing or research position if you do very well.

So the question you should be asking yourself is are you ready to commit 2-4 years to this research, after completing your MSc course work in 1year. Are you that enthusiastic about the research area? Are you ready to build your career in Academics or research? If yes, then Goodluck my friend!

You are not actually skipping a year, it makes the process of acquiring a PhD faster. Whilst doing a PhD, the first year will be a research masters that you have to pass and it's a guaranteed entry to PhD.

Guy don't ponder over it any further because it really shows that your admission is sealed already and funding would be available for u probably. This is exactly what a close pal of mine experienced when he gained admission into university of Alabama in US which is direct PhD.Its the best option for you so grab it with both hands.

Young Man, Accept the PhD track. It is an all win win situation. Think of it this way, if you are not cut out as a PhD material, they will award you your masters degree. Believe it or not, you might be taking some masters' level classes if you are deficient in certain areas. Another thing you need to know, unlike in the UK, PhD students in the US and Canada take classes a lot for one or two years while conducting research at the same time. So you will not be left behind just because you feel you are not prepared enough. One more fact, some schools admit BS holders directly into the PhD program and this practice is common for chemistry, Finance, Economics, Chemical engineering, etc. By no means does direct admission into a PhD program makes it a cake walk, but just like you were a JJC in your freshman year, and you made it through your final year, you will also become a JJC in the PhD class but you also make it. As the saying goes, there is nothing to fear but fear itself. Finally, Nigerian students excel quite a lot in overseas schools because they typically hunker down and get the job done. But be afraid and burn the midnight oil if you have one or more original Chinese or Indian students in your class. Take the Plunge with the offer of PhD admission and ride into the sunset.

Opting for M.Sc at this point in time might deter you the opportunity to be given admission because your supervisor has already given you the nod for PhD and you might not get another supervisor soon to work with you for M.Sc. I believe there should be enough funding for you from the supervisor because they know that almost all students need funding for their programs even if its not full funding the partial funding can still get you somewhere and with another Research or Teaching Assistantship stipends would suffice your stay throughout the program in 4 years. And by the time u finished the program in 4 years you are eligible for permanent residence. Guy you are very lucky just go for it.
