ESSENTIAL
1. RAM - a minimum of 2gig RAM (depending on ur budget)

2. Processor type and speed- Insist on Intel processors.. I'm not really conversant with the variants but going for Intel is essential. Speed should be 2ghz minimum

3. Hard drive space - minimum of 160gb (depending on budget)

4. DVD ROM

5. USB ports (3)

6. Webcam

will this specification effectively run autocad?

You really have to determine the kind of work you are use the laptop for in order to know your ram size.

With regard the processor, once you've decided to go for Intel, there are so many options. Diff classes of processors - from the Pentium series, to the M series, to the i series.

Best you go for the i series. Three options here - i3, i5 and i7. The higher the number, the more powerful. But it doesn't end there! There are currently 6 generations of these chips. The latest are called "Skylake" 6th gen. Go for something from the 3rd gen upwards. A 6th gen i3 is better than a 2nd gen i5.

Be very careful about this. Look out for the processor code name eg i5-5200u. Do a Google search of the name to learn more about it.

Core i5 is the best option for me cos the performance diff to i7 is not much. Gives you better battery life, and is cheaper than i7.

Whoops. No be small thing

Bros put more light on ...windows/Vista laptops. Thanks
Re: What Are The Major Specs To Check In A Laptop When Getting One? by Nobody: 3:25pm On May 24, 2016
major specs to look out for Generation of the CPU
dont be fooled by someone showing you a core i7 2nd generation and claiming its better than core i5 4th generation
you can easily know generation by the first number in the model. like core i5 4xxx is intel core i5 4th generation, core i5 6xxx is intel core i5 6th generation which are currently the latest....

at least 4gb ram is ok.
hard drive 500gb is good to go

graphics card minimum nvidia 1gb

usb 3.0 etc

Noticed new laptops stopped using Optical Drive?
2gb ram is too low. probably 4 or 8gb should be okay.

I used both Intel and AMD laptops. The AMD I am using since Nov 2012, no issues whatsoever. AMD is as good too. Those theories of overheating are nothing but theories as they are.

1. The processor. Two choices here - Intel or AMD. Intel is generally preferred to AMD, although AMD processors of equivalent abilities to Intel processors are cheaper. Grab?

2. The RAM. Go for at least 2gb. 4gb is standard. Higher is better

3. The screen resolution. Least acceptable is 1366 by 768 (which is just above HD). Look for Full HD if you can - 1920 by 1080

4. Screen size. Varies from 11" to 17". Your choice.

5. Battery life. Very important

6. Storage. Two choices here. HDD or SSD. Hard disks are much cheaper, but slower than SSDs. If you're going for a hard disk, look for at least 256gb. 500gb is becoming standard though. A 128gb SSD is still more expensive than a 500gb hard disk. Choose wisely.

7. Connectivity. Wifi is standard. The more USB ports the better (newer laptops usually have at least one USB 3 port, which is faster than the more common USB ports). Bluetooth is optional. Bluetooth USB dongles are quite cheap if you need one.

what this guy said, i usually go for the very best when it comes to things like these.

Sir I'm sorry to say but your research is completely an amateur kind of research. One of the best in terms of strength and ruggedness is 2nd generation intel processor. From 4th generation upward are economically designed to increase their profitability. 1-3rd generation are removable processor which gives it more advantage than the later generation which are built onboard. Onboard processor are not strong nor rugged and it's vulnerable to heat up since it's sharing same panel and chips with the VGA.
That is why brand new 2nd and 3rd generation intel laptop is always more expensive than the later compare to age.
Try more on your research. I love your write up though

it depends on what you want it for.

If its to surf and type letters get the cheapest .
But make sure ur RAM is at least 6GB and hard drive at least 500GB.
AMD processor will do.
Screen size dont matter

If it media like graphic design and video eiditing.
Make sure you get a processor with at least 4 cores and make sure it's fast.
GHz is not the only thing to check for processors.
Also the processor should be i5 or more.
If AMD make sure it's an i5 equivalent or more.

Get at least 8GB or more RAM.
Make sure it has a dedicated Graphics Card (GPU)
Hard drive at least 500GB or more.
Make sure the screen is at least 15 inches or more.
