I will only say u shud shun d job because u hv no passion 4 it. Regardn if u cud do ur biz while serving in d military, I confidently will say it's possible but dat depends on d kinda biz. My uncle, though a colonel is one of d most successful farmers(poultry, fruits and cereals) in kaduna state. He's the CEO/MD of Molag farms. He started his bizness in his early days in d military and 2day he's worth more than N700m. There are challenges though, but I assure u, it's possible. But dis same uncle of mine doesn't want me 2 join d military. His reason is dat only lecturers have freedom of tym and thus him wanting me 2 be an academician

Merit died a long time ago in this country, we got soldiers that became soldiers not because they wanted to become one but because their uncle has 'slots' why will they not run from Boko Haram ?

Biko, pardon my ignorance. I have absolutely no idea. I have done a bit of reading and I saw somewhere command troops/platoon of 16-20 or so. Aunty shine your light upon me, biko.
@op if you are very hardworking and gifted and ur bosses see that you can command a platoon...but most times as a new 2nd lieutenant you will probably be transfered to a checkpoint or patrol in borno..or kaduna.. safe..

hahahahaha.. Lolzzz. Are you a soldier mam? You said a 2nd lieutenant is non commissioned.

Commissioned officer are those that graduated from the Nigerian defence academy, they can rise to become full fledged generals depending on further studies and off course who you know or as it were before now, who's/which successful coup you helped installed.

Non commissioned officers gets into the army through the Nigerian Army graduate (DSSC) employment. Someone who gets in via this route will definitely not rise in the army as fast as someone who went through the full complimentary course at NDA. If you attain the rank of Colonel through this route, count your stars lucky.

I believe this is what the lady was trying to say when she referenced commissioned and non commissioned officer.

@OP, it will be practicably impossible to run a business you will oversee directly and still work in the army...unless of course you have develop and put in place mechanism to make the business run without you being physically possible, a thing I suppose most businesses in Nigeria aren't equipped for.

Not long on nairaland there was a thread that explains the real difference between an entrepreneur and self-employed.

I have an Aunt, she's a Captain in the NA Intelligence. She runs a travel agency and recently just opened a big pharmacy. Nigeria of today, you have to be book and street smart. Even Dangote does not sell only cement.

Commanding troops as a 2nd lieutenant? I laugh in Spanish. grin. The war front somewhere in Adamawa or borno is where your bubble will burst as you are a noncommissioned officer. Only the commissioned officer (From Major , colonel , brigadier general, major general, General) command troops and sit inside AC dashing out orders . Your job as a lieutenant is to assisist a captain of a troop in organization and tactical approach during warfare.
Modified: A second lieutenant is a commissioned officer. Only if you attained that from passing through the NDA
why are u so confused...a 2nd lieutenant in d the NA is a commissioned officer...

Good morning guys, I am a graduate from the Premier University and recently passed out from NYSC programme. I have always been into business right from my university days because I crave independence.

While serving, I was also into business. Before passing out, I launched my startup and currently have 2 employees. Although, I studied mechanical engineering, I have no plans to work in the industry, except as a business person utilizing my skills.

Now for the purpose of this post. I have an uncle who has contacted me twice to join the armed forces - police and recently army. He is a politician and has a slot and wants someone from our family to fill the position. I outrightly turned down the police offer but recently army came in and I am having second thoughts.

As a child I wanted to be a soldier but I was an only son. Hell no, there's no way my parents would have allowed me go to NDA. I am 23, ambitious, and still crave independence and financial buoyancy.

I want to find out what the benefits of joining the army are. Specifically as a second lieutenant. Would I be commanding troops? Can I combine it with my business? The latter is my major concern, I don't have plans of touching the salary I get from NA.

Basically, what is my job description, the demands of the job, and the time I get for myself. Thanks in anticipation.
it is always said...where there is a will..there is a way..however..in the Nigerian Military it does necessarily pan out like dt...I am also in ur shoes..don't join the NA hoping for financial buoyancy..it won't come...as per running a business alongside..u will only get frustrated...by the time you are posted severally..u will av rethink...except you get into a good and well spelt out partnership...about being independent or being ur own boss..u av no idea...d military will take ur time and ur life..depending on wherever u are serving..about commanding troops...u will av to be in d action..at the forefront...in fact wen u get in...u won't even want to go to the field...I use to be enthusiastic about the military..but my brother...if u av any other use for ur life or urself...go for it..but if you dont...lay it down then for the service of King and country...

Don't let anyone deceive you, it is very hard for you to be in the military and still run a business. First of all, you may not be sure of where you will be posted to after passing out from training. Secondly, you will be so occupied with one military job or the other that all your business idea will run out of your head automatically. In addition, the people you see on a daily basis in your immediate environment are uniform men which will make your thinking faculty to change entirely, because your life will be influenced by this environment. I advise you to stick to your biz if it is profitable enough to make u succeed in life. Your chances of going to niger delta, boko haram or any other war infested place as a letenant is 50-50. So think twice.

Forgive me if I'm wrong but I think a 2nd lieutenant is a commissioned officer.

I always wanted to join the Army or Airforce. I would have joined as a non-combatant if not for my parents. I had even planned to come back for the NDA but now I see it's a matter of "slots". I'll rather join the French Army.

Vive La France

please, is that really possible for a non indigene to join the French army without civilisation ??
