Hello brethren, from my observation after going to different churches not that I change churches but I also get to attend other peoples church when invited. I noticed a lot of churches have sound issues some have tried to fix it and some are uninterested. Those who are lovers of good music can also relate with this. Sound it the main focus when preaching the gospel cos without it you won't be heard.
I'm using this opportunity to introduce myself: I'm sylvanus by name a fellow brother in The Lord and would want to contribute to the enhancement of the gospel by offering my services free of charge to churches who need it. I'm not saying you should make me your member o cos I have my church, I will love I help you work on your sound issues and if possible train your sound engineers. This is my free contribution to the gospel. You would only be responsible for my transportation fare.

My services are only available to Lagos churches for now.

It depends on the size of church and the way it was built. The answer to ur question cannot just be given onlne, it has its approach. There are many speakers out there and the production of a speaker is not by how big it is. I hate it when churches spend unnecerally on sound equipments.
Just consult me and i`ll come around before I reccomend. Remember its free but u must take care of my transport that's all.

Tomorrow's another day to be on your toes @ sound engineers.

I want to talk a little about speakers and positioning.

I've noticed alot of sound engineers in churches go ahead and purchase lots of speakers all the name of having state of the art sound, I just smile in my mind when I see such.
example: the Church I worship in now has six speakers and two monitors cos its a small church. I joined the Church less than a year ago cos of relocation. I noticed they had bad sound and I sprung to the rescue. After much deliberation and explanation to the present sound enigineers i ended up using only four speakers with better output and they were surprised.

speakers are used for different reasons and you have to know what you want to use them for aside just being audible.
But note this: the more speakers you have the more prone you are to feedbacks.
I'm sure you have seen some home theaters with 3.1,5.1 or 7.1 as the case may be. these are not just numbers but are for speaker positioning.
3.1 comes with 3 twitter speakers and the point one means the sub woofer

5.1 also means 5 twitter speakers and a subwoofer and you can guess the 7.1 as well

to enjoy these speakers you have to place them rightly to serve its purpose cos in recording of songs and movies some professional sound engineers use what is called PAN

Panning is the act of channelling sound either to right left of centre (my own definition). This is an effect to enhance the perception of the music or movie you're watching or listening to. I'm sure you must have gone to the cinema and heard a sound either from the right or left as if someone or something is coming from that direction . well that's the effect of panning and speaker positioning.

There are alot to speak of an about in sound but would talk more later.
I hope this little tip would help in you sound engineering.

Have a happy weekend

Happy new year to you all, happy to see you this 2018.

To my fellow sound engineers; how was the Christmas?
Hectic I guess.

I've know I've been away for a while though I still get calls from people...I hope this year it would be different as I was so busy previously.
Nevertheless I'm going to try as much as possible to post more as time goes on.

Happy new year once more

SPEAKERS PART1

Hi everyone, today I'll be talking about speakers.
Speakers which are also transducers produce the end product of our sound which makes it very essential. When it comes to speakers, there are alot of things to put into consideration from the cones to the acoustic that is the wooden build to the drivers behind.
I see alot of people build speakers by the road side which makes me laugh atimes because I'm 100% sure they don't have a clue to what they're doing. Please don't get me wrong those speakers actually work but I assure you that's a layman's approach to building of speakers.
Have you asked yourself why a peavey sounds different from a wharfadel and sounds different from a soundPrince and so on? It is because of the speaker build in terms of the cones, the shape of the horn speaker (twiter/highs), the acoustic of the body and the driver. For those of you who don't understand what I mean by "driver", what I'm referring to is that part of the speaker where you plug your wire which is also called an inactive-crossover. These things require an expert observation both with experienced and trained human ears to high tech equipments for optimized output. You see the reason I said they have no clue to what they're doing. Lets even brainstorm together:
1. What's our assurance they used the same quality of cones?
2. What equipment did they use for quality check?
3. What is the technology behind the driver used behind the speaker?
You see this further shows there's little or no understanding as to what they're doing.
Different speakers are designed in different ways for different purposes some for outdoor, some for indoors some as monitors...etc.
I remember this holiday I went to setup sound for a street carnival and I used eight speakers in whole ( four long speakers two monitors and two sub woofers). I noticed difference in production one was louder clearer and had a long throw than the other. It was a concern to me but obviously I just had to make do with what I had. This showed that one was designed for outdoor while the other for indoor. This is very important when have to make choices in purchase of speakers especially when you specifically want to use it for outdoor...to be continued

Please feel free to ask questions

I love your analysis and perception.

I have a question:
I have always have the perception that Speaker for Vocals should be separated from Speakers for Instrumentals. I think they give better outputs (especially for limited budgets): what do you think?

Thanks.
As for having separate speakers for instruments and vocals, this is not needed at all as bulk of work for this is done with your mixing on the console, making sure that each vocal and instrument standout by putting them on separate frequencies.
I hope this helps

Yes I understand. But I stated this because of a perceived problem at my former church assembly.

Instrumentals by itself comes out fine.
Vocals by themselves also come out fine.
BUT when the two are mixed, the Vocals suffer distortions.

I assume that the speakers are under powered (they have a 3 kW Amplifier) for 500 capacity church (high ceiling)

I think I get where you're coming from, now let me explain:
most vibrations come from instruments that have low frequency hence in the presence of this vibrations it causes the voices to also vibrate in an un required manner. once this is noticed, it means the speaker has reached its limit thereby giving you noise instead of sound. if you doubt this explanation just ask for the volume to be reduced and you'll see the difference.
I always advice churches to have a sub woofer as this would reduce stress on the top speakers. with this I can easily send the low frequencies to the sub woofer leaving the mid and high frequencies to the top speakers.

If I get you well, you are saying
1. Get a sub woofer OR
2. Increase the power rating of the speakers

what I'm trying to say is get your mixing well by separating the frequencies at which each instrument operates. Also, if you ain't satisfied with the low frequency output then get a sub it reduces stress on your top speakers
