Even tho the policy sounds elitist, it's a welcome development. We all envy the progress of the Western world but we frown at policies that can make our society be like theirs. No street hawker in London, nobody sells sausage in newyork traffic. I think it's time people start realizing that lagos is like a country in Nigeria where other vices in other states will not be tolerated. Nigeria has 36 states and as a citizen you are free to live in any of the remaining 35 States if hawking is your destiny. Most people living in Lagos have no business there. Most Nigerians see lagos as a greener pasture or mini London hence they relocate there with little money and resources with which they can thrive in more economic friendly cities to suffer for nothing. How do you explain youths leaving the southeast en-mass with the hope of selling gala and lacasera in traffic all in the name of living in Lagos? How do you explain northerners leaving there states only to come to lagos with the hope of begging and sleeping under bridges? Go back to your state if you can't cope with the directives of the lagos state government. For the fact that your parents raised you to become a doctor through selling wares on the streets doesn't make Street hawking right. No sane society allows such menace to thrive. If the hawker that was crushed by a BRT bus happened to be your family member, i guess you won't fault this policy. Living in Lagos is not by force, go back to wherever you come from. undecided

I feel sorry for people like you, because you are just ignorant of things, do you know how sad what this new development will be to some people, (me especially, a yoruba woman that gives the fanyogho to the those Ibo boys to sell) will be feeling. Those your so call Ibo boys are honest and hard working youth that life has really being too okay for them. The small money they make on that yogho they send it to their aged parent in their village. So just pray that you should never be in their shoes tomorrow because you wont even see the fanyogho to sell.

Stoopid people tribalizing the thread already. If you think Igbos are the only victims then you're mad! Go to the same Egbeda where Uche was interviewed and see Iya Afeez and Iya Monsuru strapped with babies on their backs hawking lacasera, teem and bottled water. What will be their next source of income if Ambode bans and arrest them?
I wonder.

Can Lagos State Government answer me this question- who is more a nuisance to the society? Area boys or street traders/hawkers?

The policy is nt targeted at any tribe or religion. It may be painful now as it will deprive some pple their means of livelihood but on the long term its an excellent policy. Government has a responsibility to protect the lives of every citizen and as such shuld not allow citizens do things that will harm them. Street hawkers endanger their lives and the lives of road users.

Ambode Plz don't add to people suffering. No one is happy doing street/highway hawking but man must chop. Don't just ban street hawking provide alternative.

I stand with the masses.

This law wont have been effected if the so-called masses didn't resort to destroy government property over worth millions of Naira. Government property to make citizens transport easier. No serious government will allow hawking after the loss

I think it's a good development but it's coming at the wrong time. Considerations should be made on what they {the street hawkers} will do next. Taking a man's source of living can lead to extreme measures. But atlas in naija there is no good time

Personally I hate street trading because the street traders always mess the environment, cause hold up and nuisance. Some are part-time robbers while others are fraudsters.

From the street traders I see everyday, no tribe is exempt from the menace. It all depends on the particular location. For instance, in Docemo, Azikiwe, Ereko, Balogun and other other adjourning streets in Lagos Island, you see mostly Yoruba and Ibo hawkers. In Agege, Abattoir, Ketu, Mile 12, you will encounter mostly Yoruba and Hausa street traders. In Oshodi, Mushin, Yaba, Oyingbo, you get a mix of Yoruba, Ibo and other tribes.

So why ethnicise the subject?

On the internet you can be anything you want. It's really strange how people choose to be arrogantly ethnocentric.

The suggestion here is for the governor to provide alternatives for those hawkers and you are saying the Igbo boys(based on whatever harm they might have meted out on you) should pack their load and go back to their state.

Let's assume the 'Igbo' hawkers leave, followed by the 'Hausa' hawkers...what would be the fate of the 'Yoruba' hawkers? They should pack up and come to your house i guess.

NDA is still trending on Nigerian security issues. Let's prevent the occurrence of LHA(Lagos Hawkers Avengers)...

If there are no street traders then there will be no reason for all of those useless agberos to litter the street.
The government would never fight the agbero's who are worse off than these hustler. You think say na those silly agbero's dey chop the money? Na indirect tax.

don't get me wrong, what I mean is Lagos government can't provide an alternative for the Igbo's, a tribe that fails to support it's agenda. we can accommodate the Hausa's, Yoruba's are very accommodative . can ur eastern governors provide an alternative to the Yoruba's and Hausa's in ur state? make una go back to una fathers land.

For every law, there is an exception. Ewa Agoin and Agege bread can never ever be banned. If Ambode or Atide ever tries it, what happened in 1770 that lead to the Yoruba Civil War will repeat itself. I stand with Ewa Agoin...... Where do you stand?

Keep quiet and stop ranting.

So you think if ALL the Igbos leave Lagos, the state will remain the same? Then you guys will realize that 'you never know what you have until you lose it'.

I believe each tribe has its specific role to play towards the development of this and any State.
