Personally, I think 442 is old fashioned. Maybe in the 90's but I could bet that such tactic would always be crushed by 4-3-3/4231 tactic in 9 out of 10.
In fact, our best performance in the CL campaign under fergie in the 2000's was when we had a 3-man midfield with an attack trio of Tevez, Rooney, Ronaldo. Or when Rooney was deployed as an out an out striker until his injury against Bayern.
No doubt that Leicester city (with their agile and physical midfield) managed to win the league by deploying the same 442 tactic but I would attribute it to lack of top deeplying playmakers among the top 4 clubs and I could only think of Arsenal's Carzola who's always been injured btw or maybe Fabregas who's been terrible for a while now although I'm still of the opinion that Fab's more of an attacking midfielder.
Don't forget the same Leicester physical midfield still got outclassed by an ageing Carrick at old trafford. This is the same reason why Mancity had always failed in europe with their 442 tactic or why Real madrid couldn't get out of 1st round stages under Pellegrini with his 442 tactic.
Some would likely bring up the Atletico team but then, the only time they were able to outsmart Barca last season was by deploying a 4-3-3 tactic in the second leg CL tie. More so, I don't like how Atletico play with their defensive boredom tactic. They reek of clubs with small time mentality.
Anyway, I don't mind SS whose attribute are similar to no 10. For examples, Messi, Robben, Totti, Reus etc who constantly drift around the wing and has abundant of vision in their arsenal.
We could even say Payet game has suffered as a result of Griezman in the centre, not only because he's being deployed as a touchline winger in the 442 tactic but also, he had no one to constantly release him in acres of space on the wing nor the space to always drift into, in the centre.

I would say Griesman would be perfect for Conte 3-5-2 though.
But with us, the likes of Mikhi and Martial games would suffer as they are no wingers nor wide midfielder such as Koke who is more or less like a winger capable of delivering great crosses into the box.
4-3-3/4-2-3-1 is the best to fit in Mkhi and Martial.
