Apart from the books, there were classic poems written by the likes of Christopher Okigbo and co. There was a collection of those poems in a book. I've forgotten the title. I need that book anyone pls?

Who remembers the African Child, The River Between and Weep not Child?

The concubine will always be one of my favorites, One Week One Trouble too, Bottled Leopard, Arrow of God, Anthills of Savannah and Man of the People. Wives Revolt was interesting too, Ralia The Sugar Girl, and Without A Silver Spoon.

In fact, God bless you OP. Nostalgia just full me as I dey now. Golden memories.

Kokoro was a very famous blind musician. He used to busk on Igbosere Road and Broad Street (at least, those were the two places that I saw him everyday). He played the tambourine (just like Akin in the novel).

I was always amazed by the fact that he knew the streets so well that he could walk up and down them unaccompanied. I saw him on those streets everyday and he never had an accident (at least not to my knowledge).

I think it was in the 1990s that PMAN (finally) decided to do something for him, but unfortunately he died soon after that.

There's a statue of him at the new Tinubu Square fountain.

waoo.... interesting! ThankGod for N. L, i lacked the slightest idea that the story of Akin was inspired by a real life personality. Thanks for the insight.

Pacesetter's Novels Were the Bomb then! I had a lot of them then. Unfortunately I just can't remember all their story lines, but my best were those written by Late Kalu Kalu (I hope I am correct) And one Helen (Can't pronounce nor write her surname cheesy grin but it starts with Ovie) That later started written for Vanguard Newspapers. http://www.bummyla.com

God bless you pally.. I ate all those books during Prep in school then.. My dad refused to by us a television because by his theories, that I didn't understand, it would not make us to read. So we all lived on books.. & God bless his soul.. He had a good stock. Your post reminds me. I now see the wonders of books over television. God bless my dad's soul.

You won't understand what I mean until you read that book. I skipped the first few pages when I read it the first time, but once I got started, I couldn't put it down. I almost died of laughter several times.

I've laid many potent curses on the head of the person that stole my copy of the book, but I shall get another one soon.
You see the thing with the Great ponds is that elechi Amadi used his profound knowledge of fundamental infantry tactics to describe his battle scenes.. Remember the naive manoeuvres of the warriors of Aliakoro.
lol..read the book and lost it the same year- 2001, yet it still feels like yesterday.. A good Nov that!

The boy slave was about Shettima who was kidnapped and sold to a faraway land. He became friends with the prince of the land after he saved him from a ferocious guard's horsewhip. The sequel was The return of the boyslave.
Koku Baboni I think was about a baby placed in a basket and dumped in a forest.
The late Mabel Segun- My father's daughter.
you are very right. The boy slave was one of the books that shaped my early life. I could remember painting a picture of all that happened in my head. The love, the betrayal, the lack of trust in your best friend, the reward of honesty and hardwork? No! Shettima. cry
