Meet the young man redefining auto-parts business in Nigeria

23-year-old Dairo Damilola Opeyemi who hails from Ibadan, Oyo State is the young Chief Executive Officer of Autofactorng, redefining auto-parts business in Nigeria. Founder, Autofactorng, Damilola Dairo In a country where buyers culturally show an overwhelming distrust of salesmen in the automotive industry, Dairo’s innovative platform sells genuine auto-parts at affordable prices and delivers it to client’s doorsteps nationwide with warranties on every item sold is no doubt a breath of fresh air to car users. The young CEO’s rise to becoming a nationwide auto-parts supplier in less than a year of establishing his firm is based largely on his passionate ingenuity to provide car users in the country with genuine alternative to both sub-standard and fairly used auto-parts, ‘Tokunbo’ which overtime leaves buyers cheated and unsatisfied. After graduating from Bowen University in 2012, where he studied Physics and Solar Energy , Dairo who said he has always had a flare for cars ventured into the automotive industry in Nigeria by providing solutions in the aspect of car body repairs and painting.

Despite his quick success Dairo said he has sustainability plans to keep his business growth. “Apart from taking orders online via very interactive platform, we are looking at having a strong presence offline, building a full blown auto-part store where you can walk in and out with all kinds of car accessories/parts – fenders, engine blocks, batteries, tyres, etc. Assured that his firm, Autofactorng will in a few years actualise its dream of being the first auto part store in Nigeria, Dairo equally sees expansion into Ghana and other parts of Africa, “we are already getting calls outside Nigeria, most especially in Cotonou & Ghana and we have actually delivered products to Cotonou on several occassions.” Asked if he has a special business philosophy or formula, he said; ” I believe strongly in the acronym, P.O.P, which stands for Perseverance, Optimism and Positivism, this 3 keys will see a start-up through difficult stages which of course are inevitable in starting up any kind of business.”

Founder and Chief Technical Officer of VoguePay.

Leke Ojikutu is the founder and Chief Technical Officer of VoguePay. VoguePay is a pioneering online payment solution that offer buyers and sellers a secure and easy way to transact business online.

Techpoint spent an afternoon with Ojikutu chatting about his journey into tech entrepreneurship and the challenges of running a successful tech business in Nigeria.

Techpoint: How did a Chemical Engineering graduate end up as a Software Developer?

Leke: That is all thanks to the “Nigerian factor”. The average Nigerian university student has no idea what their course of study is all about, mostly because it wasn’t their first choice. I actually wanted to study Computer Engineering but two of my sisters were already studying that. My parents didn’t want 3 out of their 6 children all studying the same course, so I had to opt for Chemical Engineering (at the Lagos State University). My mind was never in it though. I struggled and managed to finish with a Second Class Upper.

After I finished school in 2002, I decided I wasn’t going for my Youth Service (NYSC) because if I did, my parents would force me to pursue Chemical Engineering on completion. That would actually derail my passion for tech entrepreneurship. As I couldn’t afford to pay for the training I needed, I knew I had to take the self-taught path. So I told my parents I didn’t make the NYSC list, although I actually did. I kept up that lie for 4 years. That was enough time to learn everything I needed.

Co-inventor of “Hospital-in-a-Box”,

Co-inventor of “Hospital-in-a-Box”, a solar-powered, life-saving operating room which can be transported to remote areas of Africa and set up quickly.

Although he spent part of his youth in America (including going to high school in Cleveland, OH), Seyi Oyesola’s heart was always in his native country of Nigeria as he dreamed of returning there to become a physician and help his people. After completing high school here, he returned with his family to his homeland where he earned his medical degree and began his internship training. But he soon discovered that on his meager salary as an intern, he could barely afford to maintain his mother’s ageing car. So he left Nigeria for Britain to complete his training, asking himself: “Is this going to be a permanent phenomenon? Will we keep paying doctors in Africa so poorly that they migrate to the U.S. or the United Kingdom?” As he later realized when he began practice as an anesthesiologist and critical care physician, such situations are but microcosms of more serious medical and healthcare problems plaguing Africa. But with determinism and optimism, Seyi is doing his part to make a difference.

Why He’s Important: After being fed up with the deplorable state of emergency medicine that he saw in many remote parts of Africa, Seyi set about to find a way to bring quickly transportable and assembled surgical care to these areas in emergency cases. The answer came when he collaborated with English engineer Alexander Bushell. The pair developed “The CompactOR,” or more popularly known as “Hospital-in-a-Box”– a solar-powered portable operating theatre replete with all the equipment found in a normal operating theatre, including a defibrillator, EKG monitoring, suction, an anesthetic machine, and surgical lighting. The award-winning invention was launched in 2007 and is in use in rural areas of Africa.

Common ailments and injuries (such as trauma, burns and heart attacks) are survivable in developed countries, but kill thousands of Africans each year because basic medical care is often not available. Hospital-in-a-box, powered by solar panels (and if necessary supported by pedal power or from a car battery), can be dropped into inaccessible zones by helicopter and set up quickly.

Current Activities: Dr. Oyesola is Chief Medical Director of the newly-opened Delta State University Teaching Hospital in Nigeria. He is also a director of Practice Ventures (Britain), a company that specializes in the supply and maintenance of high-tech medical equipment to African hospitals. In addition, he has served as senior lecturer at the Imperial College School of Medicine in London.

Education: He completed his Bachelor’s of Science degree and medical degree from the University of Lagos, Nigeria with specialist training in Anesthesia and Critical Care in Britain and the U.S.

In His Own Words: “In serving a cause greater than self, a team is able to produce results in a way that the whole is greater than the sum of the parts,” says Seyi regarding the team approach he likes to take in solving problems.

CcHub CEO and Co-founder, Bosun Tijani has announced the official global launch of his social fitness app Truppr. Before now, it had been in beta testing phase was already being widely used by fitness enthusiasts in Lagos, Abuja and some parts of the UK.

The Problem

A fitness enthusiast, Bosun fell in love with teams sports because their social nature provided an exciting way to keep up with his strict fitness regime. However, having lived in 5 different cities in the last 10 years, he found that moving around that much came with its peculiar challenges of finding regular fitness partners.

“I play football for fun and fitness twice a week and consistently struggled to keep the routine due to difficulty in finding teammates and venues while on business trips or in new cities”.

Like Bosun, millions of people globally rely on team sports and physical activities as a source of regular exercise. Bosun conceived Truppr as a solution to this problem.

Truppr is a social tool that provide sports lovers and fitness enthusiasts alike with an easy way to find local fitness partners while on business trips, holidays or in a new city. With Truppr, users will be able to organise, or join in on, amateur sporting events within their locality. The app will also serve as a one-stop shop for finding and booking sport venues in cities around the world.

The App – Truppr

The Truppr app interface is quite intuitive and free of clutter. On launching the app after sign up, you are greeted with a landing page of 4 tabs. The first tab is the list of sporting events in reverse chronological order.

While Truppr is available for use globally, the team is looking to drive mass adoption across Africa in its first year. Truppr is incubated and funded by the Co-Creation Hub and has benefited from the Tony Elumelu Foundation early stage grant for technology ventures. With over 7,500 users, 55 new users per day, 343 events and 78% active users participating in at least 3-5 events per month (in its first 4 months), Truppr is ramping up activities to generate awareness and position itself as one of the globally relevant tech start-ups emerging from Africa.

You can download the Truppr app from the Google Play Store, App Store or use it directly on the web.

Nigeria’s Safermom.org Educating Mothers on Safe Child Care With Free Health Information

CEO & Founder: Adeloye Olanrewaju

Nigeria’s SaferMom is new channel aimed at providing pregnant and or nursing mothers with timely and targeted health information via SMS and pre-recorded voice services in local languages to improve maternal and child health.

The Safermom’s platform is built to automatically Follow up Pregnant women’s developmental stages, Deliver family health campaigns messages such as malaria prevention, HIV/aids and TB advisory via targeted SMS and voice services, Track Vaccination, Disperse emergency information, medical adherence, fix appointment, Conduct surveys and receive feedbacks in minutes through our dashboard.

SaferMom also provides improved communication channels for care providers, hospitals, clinics, health insurance companies, Diagnostic centers, NGOs and other health entrepreneurs to sign up and easily communicate with the audience (mostly women) they serve based on monthly subscription fees.

Safermom’s innovative messages which goal is to help mothers through pregnancy and baby’s early years through timely, dedicated and targeted vital information are currently available in Yoruba, Igbo and Hausa.

“We hope to translate it to more Nigerian languages as we expand in the future since our services can be deployed in any languages of the world and to any mobile phones/lines at any location in the world even mothers without access to internet.” Lanre Adeloye told TechMoran. “Our Voice call platform which is at beta version solves the challenge of effective communicating with those who are illiterate, especially women in the least developed countries who have access to mobile phone – half of whom are illiterate.”

SaferMom’s idea was conceived about 4 years ago as medical intern in a primary health care but a personal experience about 2 years ago later brought the idea SaferMom to live. Nigeria presently contributes to about 13% of maternal and child deaths due to preventable diseases; mostly are as a result of negligence, illiteracy and failure of mothers to attend clinics for ante natal care. Most mothers also fail to present their babies for immunization schedules which have also contributed immensely to about 260,000 babies under the age of 5 years lost yearly.

Safermom is presently signing up and working with Hospitals, diagnostic centers, NGOs, Care providers, Government agencies, health insurance companies e.t.c to easily use its platform to reach out their audience. Presently, it has signed up 2,500 mothers and aims to sign up 30,000 pregnant and mothers with babies under the age of five years before the end of the year.

“Our long term goal is to scale our services and make our services sustainable using innovative models across Nigeria especially Northern areas and other emerging economies,” concluded Adeloye.

SaferMom is one of the most innovative African startups short listed for the Tony Elumelu Entrepreneurship seed funding.
