Obasanjo had nothing to do with it!, people confuse the Abuja light rail project(intra city)whose ground breaking was performed by Obasanjo with the Abuja-Kaduna rail project .

It is imperative to note that apart of the grass clearing (tagged official ground breaking in 2007) for the intracity project Obasanjo never did anything to actualise the dream. the intracity project was originally linked to the Abuja's bid to host the Commonwealth Games in 2014 which never happened!

The second STANDARD GAUGE rail built in Nigeria is this Abuja-Kaduna rail which is being commissioned today as the FIRST commercial use standard rail in Nigeria. All the other trains you have seen (including those pictures you posted above) all run on refurbished pre-1960 narrow gauge rails; hence they are pathetically slow (travel time from Lagos to Kano is 2 days) and the trains keep derailing like no man's business.

Op: I worked on that project and handled most of the sensitive documents. Trust me. You are wrong. Obasanjo initiated the project and mobilized ccecc for Kano to Lagos. Yardua wanted to scrap it but when he saw what it would cost Nigeria to demobilize CCECC, he broke it down into phases and the addendum for abuja-kaduna section was birthed. Unfortunately yardua died and GEJ took over and Buhari finished it. It is worthy to state that it was mostly funded by GEJ through FMOT then later through sure-p. It was supposed to have been finished in 2014 because GEJ/ Sambo really wanted to use it to campaign but it was impossible to rush it at that stage.
