I stay in Lagos ..it's at the discretion of an NURTW dues collector to pass a bus on dues if he wants ..there is no law in Nigeria that says when a military personnel enters a bus the bus shouldn't pay its dues ..let's stop supporting impunity ..if they born him well he should go to airport and say he has boarded a plane so the plane will not pay its airport dues
I will advise u to stop all these stories of who is right or wrong. Let me tell u, due to the nature of their job, military personnel enjoy some privileges and it is all over the world. Go and find out. For instance, for obvious reason, it is wrong for a military personnel in uniform to be on queue with civilians at the atm machine not because they are superior to civilians. If u don't know why, then your problem is greater than I thought. Back to the nurtw official and the naval personnel. A vehicle boarded by a military personnel shouldn't be delayed due to trivialities like this. This is just a rule of thumb. A superior officer in the military may not be pleased with the action of the naval personnel but in any case they deserve to enjoy some privileges.

I am disappointed .. A military man is in no way superior to a civilian ..our Constitution is clear on the equality of every Nigerian . Secondly there is no privilege for being a military man in Nigeria what you see is called goodwill and appreciation and not a privilege. .That bus drivers decides to appreciate our military men by not collecting bus fares doesn't mean the bus driver won't honor a dues agreement with a union he joined under his freewill ..and our laws are clear on conditions of arrest and what the Naval rating did is nothing but an abduction using military assets paid for by tax payers.

Do u realise that the bus driver is also a member of the Union and has agreed to pay those dues ..please don't feel pity for the driver because in reality he has built the dues into the bus fares so any payment bustop he fails to remit he will be stealing from his union . Try and understand how these things work before you blame me..it's the same in south Africa and Kenya ..in south Africa union even enforce thier dues with with guns
. You don't go with public transport regularly. Its a known and accepted norm between the drivers, conductors and this NURTW , whenever a military/paramilitary officer is in a public bus, the NURTW dues collector is not suppose to collect any dues on such box.

That's an NURTW dues collector and what he is doing is in no way Illegal ..the only illegal thing I see is a naval rating abusing his uniform and forcefully abducting a citizen for no reason other than he was a passenger in a bus and believes that bus doesn't need to pay dues
in wat section of d constitution was it stated that it's legal for touts to collect dues from transporters.

An official of the National Union of Road Transport Workers (NURTW) got more than what he anticipated for after he confronted a Navy personnel earlier today at Alakija bus stop in Lagos.

According to witnesses, the NURTW official wanted the collect fees from the driver of the bus which the Navy personnel boarded (which is against the "law" in Lagos). He was told to stand down due to the presence of a "staff" in the bus but he refused.

According to reports, the young Naval officer tried to calm the already infuriated official but he got angry the more and even charged at him (probably due to his young face). The young officer came down from the bus and rained him with hot slaps.

Within few minutes, a patrol van from Navy town which is across the road stormed the area and descended on him. The official was immediately dragged away in front of his colleagues.... Guess we all know what happened next.

may be they employed him newly & was not tutored on the norms. Hard lesson. Next time he will know what to do. Truth is that force men are 'staff' in Lagos & so don't pay T-fare & in return the vehicles they board are insured from incessant levies while the officers are still in transit.

Read my comment once again. I didn't say the military personnel is superior to the civilian. Infact, the military should be subordinate to civil authority. Ur assertion that military personnel shouldn't enjoy privilege is borne out of pure ignorance. Google is ur friend. How, for instance, can u say if the rating (in uniform ) is on an official mission which probably will save ur life and one Union official is delaying him because of something of less importance. I hope u know the importance of security. This is just a clue to reasons why the security personnel enjoy some of the privileges. You shouldn't expect a security personnel to be struggling with civilians when he has security tasks ahead of him. One example: do u know that in US, where almost everything is tasked, military personnel don't pay for transport by train? All they need is to present their ID card. The fact that some security personal abuse these privileges shouldn't be a reason to say that they are just enjoying goodwill bro. Get ur facts right and stop misleading the public. Meanwhile, I am not justifying the action of the naval rating because he is subject to the armed forces act which is against assault.

You have made my point. This is Nigeria not UK or US.

A country where illegalities are branded legal.
A country where you pay 5% VAT at Mr Biggs and another 5% consumption tax (VAT again) to buy 1 meat pie.
A country where people like you use "legal" to justify what is wrong and turn around to complain that the country is not moving forward!
I'm sure you understand what 'legality' really means.

For clarity of doubt, I repeat, Nigerian laws recognise NURTW as a LEGAL LABOR UNION guided by set down rules and regulations.
They have due/revenue collectors just like any other LABOR UNION.

Whatever they use their revenues for is a different topic entirely.

A Naval Rating assaulting a genuine member of a LABOR UNION while going about his legitimate business is very wrong.

Let's not digress.

The NURTW dude was cursed that morning.

How person go mad go confront Navy Personnel! Those dudes craze pass Soldier but there silence and dressing wont let you know
You guys should stop this uneccessary praises of the thuggish behaviors of this Nigerian military men. Most of them exhibit a mentality of lawlessness and indiscipline, but since Nigeria itself is ground zero for lawlessness it's like acceptable behavior for anybody in the security services to be behaving like a motor park tout. In countries with disciplined militaries you don't see soldiers or naval ratings walking around aimlessly like they do here, boarding public transportation without paying, fighting unarmed civilians all over the place.

Officers do not pay for their bus fare so it's normal for them to pass the bus because of short one

What you call 'NORM' is in reality WRONG.

If the guy is truly an 'official' of NURTW, the Naval Rating is wrong.

However, they both needed to have shown respect for each other before the altercation escalated.
Read the article well, you will see the naval officer initially acted civil but the union worker dey show muscle

Its the responsibility of FAAN to collect all airspace and airport dues and they do before any flight can leave and it's the responsibility of the NURTW to collect bus dues on roads and yet this rating is interfering. .The fact that out of goodwill they are usually not taxed doesn't mean it's their right oo

I guess you don't stay In lagos if not you will know the union worker should have respect the fact that there was a navy personnel in the bus and let the bus go which is the norm but the witches in his village were after him so he didn't know the right thing to do
so you see this as a norm?

National Union of Road Transport Workers (NURTW) has no power to collect dues on the road, this is illegal. NURTW is only expected to collect union dues from its members (drivers and conductors), expected to be deducted from their salaries. This should be managed only within the motor parks and not on the road, what happens on the road is illegal. Only the local government is empowered to collect dues on the road and only in an orderly manner.
