UniqueGem: Leave them. They don't know once the Rooney stuff starts, it will be what will dominate this thread till the end of the season. The reason I no longer frequent here is because it is usually same thing, the attack on Rooney, Valencia and Jones. Unless these players leave the club their mistakes will be mostly marked here and unduly highlighted. |

chrisley024: The only player I know is blacklisted is Schweinsteiger. Jones is only unlucky because he didn't play from when Mourinho said he began to monitor our matches, that is from December. Once Jones gets a long time to prove himself, he will surely do so convincingly. |

elampiro:While I don't doubt Jones' abilities, he'll need to stay fit & do extremely well to displace one of Smalling/Bailly/Blind. He has so much to do tbh. PS: Everyone [you inclusive] know Rooney doesn't feature in any of our best possible line up on merit. |

lekkie073: Na lie. Valencia's issue caused more wahala than Rooney’s case. In 2013/2014 Valencia was top among players listed here to be sold. Same when Gaal was here. Even when Valencia was our best player in many matches, like when he played superb in the match against CSK Mosque were he was our best player and most attacking threat from right back, majority of the people still said he should be dropped. That he was always crossing the ball instead of mostly drifting inward. This was the man who gave us our equaliser with a pin pointing cross to Martial and had a very high percentage of Successful Crossing. Even during the preason, a guy called Funlord said Valencia was a useless right back and he was happy Mourinho was finally going to buy a Brazilian right back. Nothing I said about Valencia made sense to him. I told him Valencia's qualities far outstripped his weaknesses (poor aerial ability). Whenever he plays, there is always the tendency to push the opposition to their own half in the right side of our game As for Rooney, the season is just starting. He sometimes takes sometime to hit top form if he stays injury free. Even SAF said this during his time. |

GBR1: Only three players have more pass accuracy than Rooney. Mata just slightly above him. Rooney even had 7/9 accurate long balls. Again Mata had same number of unsuccessful touches as Rooney (4), even though Mata spent less time on the pitch. So why is it that it is only Rooney’s own you saw? My guy the season is just starting, some of these players are still getting match fitness. Only Eric Bailly has been training since June.

chrisley024: That's truth. If you can recall, Gaal used to send Jones back straight to the starting line up once fit from an injury, except the last time he went on a long term injury. In Gaal's first season, even Smalling and RVP had to go through under 21 when returning from injury, but Jones was always sent straight to the team (or at worst start from the bench in his first return match). Even Gaal said in March he wished Jones was available because to him Jones is a very good centre back. |

elampiro: Luke Shaw was on crutches at that time (probably till the end of the season),yet his place in the team seems guaranteed. Unfortunately, our unreliable (and useless) sickler is finding it difficult to make match-day squads for no genuine reason. Elampiro, can't you see that Jones has been found out to be useless & would soon be shipped out to Bradford or Charlton Athletic? |

elampiro: You nor know ball... Valencia played as a winger in that period & he was one of the most useless players in the side - his woeful performances summed up the disastrous season we had under Moyes. In his pathetic attempts to cross the ball, Have you forgotten how he targeted the feet of opposing LB's with high precision ? P.s : in which calabash did you see martial as a Utd player in 2013/2014 Ever since he was converted to to RB, he has been impressive & a good number of peeps here have acknowledged the positives he brings to the team. Even at that, I make bold to say that no right-thinking Pundit would advocate that Valencia be restored to his default position (as a winger). 3 Likes |

elampiro: So why is mourinho trying to sign fabinho from monaco if valencia is the new dani alves? Bros when a player reverts from an attacking position to a defensive one like valencia did, it is usually due to the fact that they had failed to deliver in their original position( for example rooneys failed attempts at trying to go and hide in midfield)! Valencia is not, was never meant to be and is currently struggling to do a job at right back! Or do you want to tell me that valencia is meeting gary nevilles or dennis irwins, or evras standards as man united full backs? |

Funlordjnr: Lekkie073, you see? As for you Funlord, be aware that even Carrick didn't start out as a midfielder. Scholes didnt also start as a central midfielder. Again, that Brazilian Mourinho wants to buy might end up being a back up to Valencia. |

AdisaOwala: YOU BE EKWE SAMPLE The argument about Valencia's ability as a right back started in 2013/2014 under Moyes. People were here blaming Valencia for some of the goals we conceded when he played as a tight back under Moyes. Valencia played as a right back and as a winger under Moyes. Even before Moyes, Valencia had played as a right back under SAF. Rafael was injured and Valencia was played behind Nani of a long time. Under Gaal, Valencia played as a right back and wing back from the start. You be olodo. Now tell me where I said Martial was with us in 2013/2014. Are you talking from your dreams? Valencia has been consistent in our right back, particularly under SAF and Gaal. When we have gone on a run of good results, Valencia was one of those fit and flying. Same way he returned from injury to help to finish the FA cup victory last season. With a man down, it was only Valencia who could have raced down the field to play a dangerous ball into the box from which Lingard scored the rebound. You no know ball. |
Re: Official Manchester United Fan Thread:''20 Times EPL Champion by elampiro(m): 1:11pm On Aug 15, 2016 |
AdisaOwala: Luke Shaw has no real competition for the left back wing. He was our best player last season until his injury. As for Jones, the season is just starting. Many things will still happen, so your premature hate is useless. Mourinho is one who changes his centre back at the slightest cases of successive errors. Remember how Cahil became the darling at Chelsea and soon we saw Zuoma. When we play such teams like West Ham, Liverpool, Man City, Stoke, etc, without Fellaini, we can begin to judge the defensive abilities of such players like Blind and others. |

elampiro: See me see trouble oh... No be you type the words below.. elampiro: It's good that you yourself don realise say this your former excuse na very moot one.. We are being linked with a new CB, Jones is being frozen outta the squad and you are here talking about Competition. How come the manager seems uninterested in the "Maldini-esque" performances Jones put in before his injury? elampiro: Indirectly, Jones would only get his chance when one of our CB flops - meaning that Mourihno probably sees the unreliable Jones as a weak, overpatched spare tyre.. Phil Jones is a liability to the team! elampiro: By that time, Jones would probably be getting nutmegged in the U21 league as usual (all in a bid to regain fitness).....that's if he hasn't been loaned out to a club in the championship. 5 Likes |

FAIR ASSESSMENT: It is likely that 2016/17 is Antonio Valencia’s last campaign as a Manchester United player. Now 31, Valencia signed a three-year deal in June 2014 with an option for it to be extended by an extra season. There are many who would consider him fortunate to still be on United’s books, having produced more OFF than ON over the last 5 years. For so long, Valencia’s presence at right-back has been a cause of intense FRUSTRATION for supporters. Under the David Moyes era, his substitution into matches was a sign that their unadventurous manager was happy with his lot. More often than not, it also became a precursor to United CONCEDING. Under Louis van Gaal, Valencia’s reputation hardly improved. The defensive uncertainty remained, particularly being caught OUT OF position while the Ecuadorian also LOST his attacking powers. This became most obvious through Valencia’s crossing, which stuck to the same method: Run forward with hesitation, don’t look up, hit the first man. Valencia’s full-back performance was as a jack of two trades, but master of neither. As an added bonus, he is impressively one-footed. ‘Fosu-Mensah and Darmian must be United’s right-sided options moving forward before Eric Bailly and Ashley Young are mentioned as emergency options – both have shown more quality in the position at the club,’ a piece read on a prominent Manchester United blog earlier this month. "Valencia lacks the technical ability, football intelligence and his physical quality is beginning to decline." Yet if that contract option depends on Valencia’s own form during "Jose Mourinho’s" 1st season in charge, the signs are initially promising. Out of nowhere, United have an Antonio Valencia in full working order, put through service and MOT and then the car wash for good measure. Fans in the away end must have gulped when they saw Matteo Darmian left on the bench, but Valencia more than merited Mourinho’s faith. Not only was Valencia solid in defence, ably dealing with the threat provided by last season’s top scorer Josh King, but he was an outlet for United on the right wing, Juan Mata tucking inside to allow Valencia to overlap. Most of all, Valencia has learnt how to cross, like an amateur golfer who suddenly starts creaming the ball down the middle of the fairway and keeps looking at his hands in bemusement. His 3 assists against Galatasaray in pre-season were followed by him setting up Zlatan Ibrahimovic’s Community Shield winner. It was Valencia’s cross on Sunday that found Anthony Martial in the build-up to Wayne Rooney’s header. He is a CHANGED man. There was an interesting point made by Mourinho after the Community Shield regarding Valencia’s mindset under Van Gaal: “There are some changes and that takes time. The 2nd goal, probably last year Valencia, instead of crossing, Valencia gets down the line and plays a back pass. So we are changing the principles of play and that takes time. So in this moment, we are not a super team, we are just a team with a super desire to work.” A slight dig at his predecessor perhaps, but also an important detail. By instilling Valencia with the licence to attack his man, the full- back immediately looks more confident. With confidence comes achievement. Suddenly, Valencia looks a NEW player. Being picked to start on the opening day for the first time in three seasons will only increase his belief. With pace, strength and stamina all in abundance despite his ageing years, it isn’t difficult to see why Mourinho might prefer Valencia to the still wispy Darmian; these are the first three characteristics of any Mourinho favourite. Valencia still has plenty to do to CONVINCE supporters that he is a viable candidate for Manchester United’s right-back role particularly against stronger opposition but the first audition could hardly have gone better. No fluffed lines, and no fluffed crosses either. Daniel Storey........... www.football365.com EOD!!! |

I was the first to start criticizing Valencia on this thread years back when i noted he was exceptionally limited as a Right Winger. He does not have the skill set to be a winger for this team. However as a Right back he has been quite good IMO and would continue to get better as the team understanding improves. What he needs now is a great Right Winger to play consistently ahead so that they can develop some chemistry on that flank. Using the word "great" removes Lingaard from the equation, at this moment he is a squad player at best. And using the words "right winger" remove Mata from the equation, we need Miki to step up and hold down that position or Jose can try Rashford on that flank. |
Re: Official Manchester United Fan Thread:''20 Times EPL Champion by elampiro(m): 4:38pm On Aug 15, 2016 |
AdisaOwala: What you typed didn't make sense to me. Not a logical response to my comment. Anyway, it is normal coaches start the season with what they perceived is their best team. Lingard would have started on the right over Mata and Mkhitaryan if not for his injury. But we know that can change in the long run. Even Ashley Young can have his chance. Jones is a super star defender. Even if he goes to another club he will prove his worth again as he did in 2011/2012 season. |
Re: Official Manchester United Fan Thread:''20 Times EPL Champion by SailorXY: 5:15pm On Aug 15, 2016 |
I also question the rationale behind benching Mkhitaryan. A new signing should get his priority chance @ least. He better start the next game either as 10 or one of the flanks. |
