Ogun signs MoU on cotton production

Posted By: August 24, 2016In:

Adesanya/Abeokuta The Ogun State Government on Wednesday signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with an indigenous natural fibre company, Arewacotton Limited, on the production, processing and marketing of cotton in the state. The partnership, which is expected to address increased cotton and demands from local textile industries as well as exports, would lead to the establishment of an ultra-modern ginnery in the state. The State Governor, Senator Ibikunle Amosun and the Chairman of‎ Arewacotton, Professor Michael Olayiwole both signed the MoU at the Governor’s Office, Oke-Mosan, Abeokuta, the State capital . Amosun, who was represented by the Secretary to the State Government (SSG), Taiwo Adeoluwa, restated the commitment of the state towards developing the agriculture sector to enhance employment generation. To him, the collaboration would boost productivity and foreign exchange for the local farmers. He said, “There are so many benefits. Agriculture, with its value chain, is the third cardinal programme of this administration. We have always not been in doubt that the only way to put more money in the pockets of our people and to tackle the restive and large youth unemployment is to develop agriculture. It would help us to keep our communities calm and ultimately it will improve our security initiatives.” ‎Also speaking, the state Commissioner for Agriculture, Mrs Ronke Sokefun, disclosed that the agreement is targeted at the cultivation of 10,000 hectares of cotton farmland‎ to be provided by the state government. ‎She explained “But in the first instance, they are going to start by clearing a thousand hectare. At the maximum capacity, we’ll be producing 25,000 metric tonnes at 2.5 metric tonnes per hectare. In fact, between 2017 and 2018, the processing mill which is called the gingery would already come on stream.‎ Our role is limited to land provision and mobilisation of the farmers.” While commending the state government, the Arewacotton boss declared that the collaboration would empower 5,000 indigenes who are cotton farmers and their dependants. ‎Olayiwole added that the partnership with the state woul‎d create multiple investment opportunities estimated at billions of naira. He stated “I am delighted to announce that Ogun State is the first state in the South West region to collaborate with us in the spirit of the MoU that we signed with the Federal Government, although we have reached conclusive stages of signing MoUs with some other state governments. “Creation and sustaining an enabling environment devoid of bureaucracy is critical to the success of this project, which is time bound. This is highly critical to the success of our collective goals and efforts.” The event was attended by officials of the Federal Ministry of Agriculture, Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN), Bank of Industry‎ and National Cotton Association of Nigeria (NACOTAN), among others stakeholders.

Any thing that aids mass scale production of either clothing, shelter, food, transportation, education or power component is always a welcome developement.
With this Nigeria should stop losing precious capital and forex to importers. These are the things that diversify the economy. Let all state govt follow this pattern and we will start earning more forex than oil can earn us in no time.

Growing cotton is not the only thing, I hope there is a corresponding industry or company that can optimize the usage of the produced cotton. This MOU is not commendable without a corresponding company that will process the produced cotton.

Exporting cotton to Europe and Asia and importing finished textile back is stupidity.

Africa should start processing her raw materials into finished good by herself. Or else, we will forever be at the losing end of the world equation.

Generally, SW should leave this mundane level of Agriculture and focused more on processing of the agricultural products. It is more beneficial, creates more job and more rewarding.

Next thing should be BRANDING.
This is what is done in India and China.
Foreign companies should come in, ensure the standards are right, and then brand the items with all the foreign names we crave.

Wow.. this is good news.
I am very happy This economic debacle is making us to unveil our virgin brains.

But we shouldn't stop at cotton production cos this is only a low-value industry. I must not hear that we are exporting cotton now Ooo. The value chain is so long that if we stop at just growing, harvesting and selling cotton, we are only short-changing ourselves. We should resuscitate our textile factories. We should attract foreign investors too and if they don't come, no need to panic.

We will eventually get there.

Kudos to the thinking and working governors.

This is a laudable move by the state governor. Its surely a way to go and with persistence and determination, we will get there. Let other state follow suit in this and let these be extended to other crops of commercial viability. God bless Nigeria.

So they should leave d raw material & first focus on the industrialization of the raw material. So if they build processing plants first, they will now import cotton There are already textile ginning plants in d north. They all closed up cos there's no more cotton. They import everything. And more dollars is needed to import d cotton. It can't work wtout d raw material.

Dts why Michelin eventually left Nigeria for Ghana. Why would I process rubber into other products when there's no more rubber in d country?

Ur talking about leaving "d mundane level of agriculture" for finished goods. They obviously go hand in hand. Maybe you should check the largest exporters of cotton, timber, oranges, oats etc.etc in d world. You would see the USA as top 5 exporter in almost every agricultural list. U don't throw d baby away wt d bath water cos ur chasing industrialization.

Are u surprised the same way the drill crude oil and export it to be refined, african leaders generally don't believe they can make things happen, that's why unemployment will always be high,80percent of raw material in production of paint is imported, and this 80percent is gotten from crude oil,so u start to wonder, what is wrong with african leaders mindset

You re both saying the same thing,he's focusing on the industrialization aspect, growing cotton is good, focus on the finished product is also good,we don't want to av large chunk of cotton then latter no step to convert it to finished product,we don't wanna end up like the oil industries where majority of our oil use is imported
