Hello Guys!
Please I am new on the US thread. I have been awake from midnight going through all US student threads but I am still not clear on some things.
I have a brother and his wife who are planning on relocating to the USA. Either one of them plans to come on student visa. Or one person could have student status and file for the other spouse. Please what's the best way around it? Basic aim is to settle down in the US at the end of the day and both plan to work. Please does a student visa allow them (student & spouse) to work? The wife has a first class in International relations though, so she is the one most likely be the one to come for study and her husband will join her as soon as possible. After getting to US how soon can they both start working? Please help a brother here. Please

It not so straightforward. ...... However to answer your question the student on F1 visa can work but it must only be oncampus and not more than 20 hours a week . (Except if you are even exception due to economic hardship then you can work offcampus and up to 40 hours ) but this not the norm and given only after one year for master student

The spouse can travel and there is a visa for it F2 but spouse will not be allowed to school or work on that visa. If school or 20 hours oncampus work is needed then the spouse need to switch to F1 visa

Hello house do I have to declare the cash on me at the point of entry, or can I hold abt 1k usd, cos once I arrived an open an acct my funds will be transfer to me,from my bank in Dubai, it's one one my bank policy.

Yes you can travel with 1k usd and do a transfer later or pay your fees by flywire ..... you are not expected to declare the cash on you except if its over 10k usd . ..if u travel with 10k and above make sure you declare it or u run the risk of it been seized ... so to answer you question above, its fine to go with 1k and make a transfer later. That is safer than travelling with too much cash

same thing with me. I've been asking o. I want to study Nursing. I dunno if I can just shun my bsc and apply with my waec. I don't know. People tell me to ask google, but I'm not getting definite answers, I just need first hand info from people on this forum.

If u have a BSC there is a route for accelerated nursing but it has some strict requirements in terms of courses u should have taken before and level of gpa

If u can't meet that then u can apply for nursing using both your waec and bsc. Since you are starting from bsc again then the requirements is not as strict and they will evaluate based on that and give u admission or not ......

the only thing is u will put in extra effort to convince a VO why u want anothee Bsc . Its might be hard but it is doable as some have gotten visa so prepare well to articulate why u want to do nursing

They both schooled in the UK but had to return. And they haven't been able to find something to do in Nigeria. From your post I think its best they both come on the F1 student visa. So if they both get to the US to study another Masters, does that imply that they will only be allowed to work on campus throughout the Masters program? Will this take care of the bills, rents etc? Is it feasible to get a campus job? Is there a time during study when they will be allowed to work offcampus? At the end of schooling, does the system allow them to stay back and apply for jobs?
Their situation brings tears to my eyes. Imagine spending thousands of pounds to study for years in the UK and then forced to leave the UK cry

Pls someone should clear this AIR (confusion) for me, am about graduating with 3rd class BCS accounting from a Fed uni here in naija And i wish to apply for MSC in the states under Business management. I need info on schools that do accept my result. Tnks in advance

3rd class has high and low so ur starting point is to find out what exactly is your gpa in america standard . (Use wes online calculator )... that will then let you know where u stand ....after that u probably need a high GRE score to help convince a school to give u admission that you are will be ok student as most schools don't accept maybe after 2.7 gpa .

For schools that might take u . u have to put in a lot of effort to find those schools.. msc in bus admin should be mba .

if they both get to the US to study another Masters: why another masters . What of phd instead..... so many phd comes with funding, why two masters ?. what field are they in

does that imply that they will only be allowed to work on campus throughout the Masters program? ...yes this the norm . In the uk u can work offcampus but still 20 hours but the US it mainly oncampus

Will this take care of the bills, rents etc? .... bills rent yes but bills and tuition no . That would be hard .. Best for them to look for GA

Is it feasible to get a campus job?..... they have to research well for schools that have good on campus job

Is there a time during study when they will be allowed to work offcampus?.... only after 1 year and if exceptional hardship is approved

At the end of schooling, does the system allow them to stay back and apply for jobs?.... well stem courses give you longer time than no stem . Then they can go on to have h1b work visa and then greencard so all depend on their line of occupation

Their situation brings tears to my eyes. Imagine spending thousands of pounds to study for years in the UK and then forced to leave the UK :. ...... this happens in the USA as well , na to pray that God will bless someone hustle and research well .... maybe they look at Canada as well .......... , they have a more surer path to stay than most countries (at least for now )

a degree in microbiology might give u an edge ..... for using waec and sat i guess you can but whether that d best i cannot say on the issue of using the bsc or not to use it ..... . If u write Sat make sure u study very well for it to ensure u have a good/ high score

U have an ok age for bsc and a related degree which will be a good thing at interview ...since you are doing business find a hospital where u can be doing some voluntary nurse thing to learn which will help later on

I'm 23. A graduate of microbiology. My gp is 2.34. I'm into business for now.

What kind of business are you into? When did you graduate from school? And how's your WAEC Result? What year did you take it? Is it a combined result? Who is your sponsor? Have you taken any standardized tests yet? Why do you want to study Nursing now?

Please stay away from that message and mind your business. It wasn't directed to you. These questions are basic questions she will have to deal with, before heading to the embassy for her interview. I have helped a lot of people on and off this thread. So, when I ask questions, I know exactly why I do so and I also want to determine how the applicant will succeed.

Hello Pals

I'm back again with my question, can any body assist me with a link on how to calculate the last 2yrs of my undergraduate study using the WES Calculator?

Need that to know if my CGPA falls within 3.2 needed as minimum in my intended US school.

Thanks in anticipation of your response.

Textbooks for here na die o.
I wanna buy a textbook maybe before weekend
Used one is $65
New $100
I guess you'd need a new one to get the access code.
Check Amazon

Use the library. You can checkout books for the whole semester. If you can't get the books in your school library, ask about interlibrary loans from other schools. Have a great Fall.

She is doctor who had finished residency in the US so her earning power was good and her husband although a naija but citizen hasnt done much career wise so he was almost earning below poverty line self to file for her ..... that helped with the proof i guess among other things they had to show but really it was their lawyer who provided them guidance ...

Your sister can present that line of reasoning to her lawyer (economic hardship ) and see if he can package her story or advice her

K, now I get it. Her lawyer had laid DAT line. Its well. I will feed d house on how it goes . lagosismyhome too

That's the job of the lawyer, all he needs tell them is what he wants.
By the way Mustghan..you can always ask on avvo.com. You can get some free legal consultation some 15 minutes or so. Hiring an immigration attorney is expensive and might not be worth it, depending on your case. Those guys are out there to take all your money. Don't hire one unless it is absolutely necessary. I'm sure you know there are no guarantees too.

So if they both get to the US to study another Masters, does that imply that they will only be allowed to work on campus throughout the Masters program? Will this take care of the bills, rents etc?

They are allowed to work 20hr/week on campus but an on campus job can't solve any of their problems most especially if they are schooling in a city.

Schwartz:

Is it feasible to get a campus job?

Yes, if there are open positions but it can take up to 1-3 months to get one. Well, with connection with other international students in the school, getting a job on campus might be possible within 1.5 month.

Schwartz:

Is there a time during study when they will be allowed to work offcampus?

You work off campus without an appropriate EAD from uscis, you're done. Only 20hr/week ON CAMPUS ONLY.

Schwartz:

At the end of schooling, does the system allow them to stay back and apply for jobs?

Yes, if they can find a job that can file a work visa for them after their 1 year optional practical training year but if not, 90 days after graduation/opt you are expected to leave US or enroll for another course. The F1 or student visa is called NON -IMMIGRANT visa i.e you finish, you go.

Schwartz:

Their situation brings tears to my eyes. Imagine spending thousands of pounds to study for years in the UK and then forced to leave the UK cry

This is why UK is not a wise choice for international students, most especially Nigerians. However, try weigh where/when to cry well, US too could be frustrating, especially for couple students who don't have much options after graduation.

Best!
